Two men who were just trying to sell some stuff online had their pants (and more) stolen Wednesday, even though they met their robbers on a busy San Francisco street.

According to the San Francisco Police Department, the male victims (aged 18 and 23) had arranged "to sell goods through an online ad" to prospective buyers meeting them on the 1700 block of Sloat Boulevard, which is between 34th and 35th Avenues.

When the buyers, two men in their 20s, arrived, one of them "showed [the 18-year-old victim] a gun in his waistband and demanded property." The gun-wielding man then forced the 23-year-old victim to "go to an ATM to take out more cash."

All in all, the two suspects stole the men's cell phones, wallets, credit cards, and cash. They also swiped their shoes and jeans, police say.

The suspects hopped into a nearby vehicle and fled in an unknown direction, police say. As of publication time, the men remain at large and no arrests have been made in the case.

Early Morning Home Invasion Rattles SF Family

Early this morning on Sloat Avenue near the San Francisco Zoo, three men broke into the home of a family and robbed the place.

SF News

crime

home invasion

sloat

Sunset

Brock Keeling

Early this morning on Sloat Avenue near the San Francisco Zoo, three men broke into the home of a family and robbed the place. The suspects tied up the occupants with electrical tape and then lifted their items -- around $5,000 in cash and jewelry. Fortunately, no one was injured or assaulted during the melee.

The three men, described by KRON 4 as "three African American men in masks," fled the scene. No arrests have been made.

We can't figure out what the "Avenue Coalition" is all about, exactly, but it sure sounds exciting. Actually, it sounds more like a group of Ocean Beach surfers bemoaning territory issues -- something all too common on California surf beaches. (Surfing: not nearly as zen-like as you think!) This flier was found by Make Awareness Day, and we're fascinated. Native snobbery? Tribunals? Banishment? Sloat? It's got it all.

It's still extraordinarily dangerous, and perhaps worse. The sign telling cars to yield on green for a left turn is still up, so drivers edge out in to the intersection, begging to get creamed by traffic coming the other way on Sloat. That left-turn signal? It lasts for precisely two seconds, at the end of the green light. Two seconds of protected left time, which means that people who waited for that arrow careen towards the crosswalk as fast as they can. Woe betide any pedestrian caught there at night. We watched through two cycles as left-turners nearly creamed cars turning right off of Sloat, and were nearly smashed by oncoming traffic. This was at two in the afternoon - what is it like at rush hour?

Ugh. We're not traffic engineers, but surely there's a better way to do this? Like a real left-turn lane, which turns on when traffic the other way has a red, and only after the pedestrian countdown is over? Caltrans? DPT? Anyone?
