Stop the Violence Campaign Marches Against Hate Crime Tomorrow

The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, along with Castro Community on Patrol and the Triangle Martial Arts Association, have scheduled a march for tomorrow, Saturday August 13th, to speak out against recent hate crimes in the Castro neighborhood. The march will start from Jane Warner Plaza at Castro and Market Streets at 3 p.m. From there, the group will move on to the site of last weekend's attack on a 52-year-old Santa Cruz man at Market and Sanchez before heading on to Blue Restaurant on Market Street where one of the Sisters was alsoattacked this week. The march to take back the neighborhood will end at Castro and 18th Streets. more ›

Andrew Sullivan Slams Hunky Jesus Contest as "Tired," Bigoted [UPDATED]

Andrew Sullivan Slams Hunky Jesus Contest as "Tired," Bigoted [UPDATED]

Politically conservative gay columnist Andrew Sullivan recently decried San Francisco's Hunky Jesus Contest, an annual costume competition held every Easter Sunday in Dolores Park. The event, put on by Catholic satire/fundraising group Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, showcases a bevy of beauties parodying Jesus Christ in varying forms of dress and sensuality. Sullivan writes: more ›

Photos: A Rainy Easter's Hunky Jesus and Easter Bonnet Contests

Yesterday's contests didn't quite draw the crowds that they would have had it been a lovely spring day in Dolores Park. But the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence moved the show over to the Eureka Rec Center, and some very slutty Jesuses (not to mention some drag queens in some inventive Easter hats) battled it out as they do every year. Not many people have been quick on the upload from yesterday's gathering, but we'll supplement this gallery as more pics appear. more ›

Cops Relent; Pink Saturday Is ON, Kids

Cops Relent; Pink Saturday Is ON, Kids

Good news for the gays: Negotiations between the police and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence moved forward last week and after agreeing to a reduction in the number of beer concessions (from 8 to 5), the two parties came to an agreement about Pink Saturday in the Castro. This follows on our earlier report about cops not wanting to agree to beer concessions at all outside of beer gardens, and the Sisters threatening to back out of the event altogether. Pink Saturday, for those who don't know, is the annual drunken block party that happens the Saturday night before Gay Pride on Castro Street, following the Dyke March. This will be the first year it features actual beer concessions, as well as DJs, a "Dyke Landing" and "Fairy Freedom Village," and a performance stage sponsored by 92.7. more ›

Cops Looking Also to Put Damper On Pink Saturday

Much like the aforementioned heterosexual pride parade of Bay2Breakers, and the dirtier street fair known as Dore Alley, this year's Gay Pride Eve celebration in the Castro is facing some possible restriction from the SFPD, and may face cancellation altogether. The Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence, the organizers of Pink Saturday for the last decade or so, have been trying to negotiate with police and the city in order to expand the footprint of the festivities down Market Street and to add beer concessions and more live entertainment -- making it more of a nighttime version of Castro Street Fair. Bar owners, who know there'll be tons of people in the neighborhood, have no objection and welcome the Sisters efforts to corral the situation. more ›
