We Read The Weeklies

We Read The Weeklies

It's our turn to read the Weeklies this week, and we start with SFist Sarah L's pick of last week, the newly-re-indied East Bay Express. Congrats! The letters hate on the UC Regents. Something about racial bias in contracting, we didn't really understand it. The story behind those "nappy headed hos" t-shirts at Bear Basics. Cover article: Some well-paid lackey of "Golden Pig" Don Perata. Bless their hearts at the EBX! They've also started summarizing their articles on their blog. We like the word "NeoXican." Book reviews! Daniel Handler v. the guy who wrote that You Suck vampire book. Pho in Oakland Chinatown. I Like Eating goes to a sports bar. Aaron Axelson compares Live 105 to Moneyball. And the EBX wins some writing awards, along with EBX alum and current SF Weekly editor Will Harper. Congrats! more ›

Day Around the (Late) Bay

Day Around the (Late) Bay

Man, that was some storm last night. Nothing like being woken up in the middle of the night because it sounds like your apartment is about to explode -Speaking of winds, the winds closed the Great Highway as sand and other debris got blown onto it. more ›

Upcoming Events -- Hilary Hahn

Upcoming Events -- Hilary Hahn

Since SFist Ced's taking a little break from concerts, we're now on classical music duty around these parts. And we're very excited to say that our first Philistine classical concert review's going to be for violinist (and friend of Nicolas Cage) Hilary Hahn, who'll be performing the Korngold concerto this upcoming Wednesday through Friday with the SF Symphony. more ›

Barry's Back

Barry's Back

10201668.jpg Since SFist Jon's out, it's fallen onto your poor sports-illiterate correspondent, to report the news that's got 24 Willie Mays Plaza all abuzz for tonight's game -- intrepid blogger Mr. Barry Bonds has deigned to fly up from L.A. and bat fourth in tonight's Giants lineup against the San Diego Padres. Well, it might help -- and certainly couldn't make things worse for-- the Giants, who, remarkably, remain second in the famed NL-W(or)est division, and only seven games back, despite having lost more games than they've won this season. Are you cheering or booing? Or, like us, do you really have no idea what's going on? (All we know about Barry Bonds is that someone we used to work with's main claim to fame in life was that he had pitched against Barry Bonds in high school and struck him out. Our former colleague was no walk-Barry chicken!) more ›

Paying More For Less

We rant and we rave, but the fact is, SFist is stuck for local transport without Muni. Even if we had a car, where the hell would we park it? So when we hear that to close that good 'ol $57 million budget gap, the folks over at Muni not only want to raise the fare, but cut service to boot, our mood gets decidedly rant-y. Mid-day service, Owl service, Metro service -- you name it, it's going to get slashed like your ex's tires. more ›

SFist on SFist

Since SFist last stopped to take stock of itself, we took a look at our server logs, discovering that we have at least 47 regular readers. What vexes us so is that we have no idea whether they're visiting us each day expecting great stuff, or showing up to point and giggle and wonder "What are these people thinking?" more ›
