OK, we're getting quite, um, rustic here by showing you a recorded preview of The Franchise, the Showtime reality show based on the San Francisco Giants post-World Series win. Sadly, Showtime hasn't released a clearer version on YouTube, which is why you're seeing this alluc.org-esque version of the preview. Sorry, folks. Anyway, check it out:

Funny, dramatic and surprising real-life stories from the most extraordinary ordinary people in America come together in what Newsweek proclaims “a jewel of a TV series.” From a stand-up comedy camp for kids, to riding stables in a North Philly ghetto; from an Iraqi student who takes on America…with questions, to the tale of three people named John Smith – these are just some of the true stories about everyday people that make the new season of This American Life unforgettable. Though they didn't make the Popscene's Top 20 Hottest Acts, this week it's L.A.'s indie-rock band, Division Day. (Maybe they'll have a chance for next year's list!) Division Day has had a full schedule this year: releasing several awesome remixes including Depeche Mode's "Enjoy the Silence", touring across the country making stops in San Francisco earlier in September and released a new CD entitled, Beartrap Island. They're on a roll and it's time to celebrate their successes; they'll be partying over at Popscene on Thursday.

Saturday includes one of our favorite San Francisco's artists, Persephone's Bees. With the 2006 release of Notes from the Underworld, Persephone's Bees are still gaining a lot of attraction from their quirky Russian-influenced pop music. They just recorded the "Little Boxes" theme song from the hit Showtime TV show, "Weeds" which aired in October. The best part about this is they are opening for The Psychedelic Furs, the punk-rockers from the late seventies into the early nineties. They're back and they are still rocking thirty years later. Damn.

Well, it brought us here, anyway. And the character of Mary Ann Singleton acted as a temporary stand-in until many of us arrived. To wit:

Mary Ann Singleton was twenty-five years old when she saw San Francisco for the first time. She came to the city alone for an eight-day vacation. On the fifth night, she drank three Irish coffees at the Buena Vista, realized that her Mood Ring was blue and decided to phone her mother in Cleveland.

(This Cleveland place is somewhere in So Cal, right?)

Laura Linney brought Singleton to life with brilliance and wide-eyed, no-so plain Jane beauty in the '90s PBS and Showtime mini-series Tales of the City. Next week she will help celebrate Tales' 31 years along with a local literary lineup of such talented key tappers as Amy Tan, Andrew Sean Greer, Michelle Tea, K.M. Soehnlein, Susie Bright, and...Father Guido Sarducci . Litquake will fete the anniversary of Armistead Maupin's Tales of the City with a reading by Laura Linney and the aforementioned. You hear that? That's (almost) Oscar-gold talent, folks. Drink it in. (Also, someone named Eve Batey will host one of the pub crawls.
Austinist interviewed ACL Fest artists Midlake and The National, and started discussing the many scheduling conflicts with Round 1: Spoon Vs. Queens Of The Stone Age. They also co-hosted a wild boat party on Lake Travis. Meanwhile, the elderly are staging a raid on the city's coffers, while the city's affordable housing program moves forward. Austin police uncovered a local prostitution ring exploiting illegal immigrants, and a new survey found that Austinites are unlikely to put out on first dates. And say hello to America's newest Bachelor: Austinite Brad "McSteamy" Womack, owner of local shot bars Chuggin' Monkey and Dizzy Rooster.

LAist got jolted by a small, but nerve tingling earthquake last week, but there was much more excitement in the air than that. In depth, they discovered a neighborhood that many natives never knew about and munched on food at a rare Buddhist Temple's Farmers Market while Google launched their street view maps feature that largely ignored most of Los Angeles. They chatted up Jenji Kohan, creator of Showtime's Weeds, and found that Brad Pitt is finally serving his jury duty. The only way things could get any better is if he were assigned to Nicole Richie's DUI case, or maybe an art show where the the Golden Girls go wild (yes, from the TV show).

Torontoist got tons of photos of one of the city's biggest parties, Caribana, and celebrated girl-oriented rock. They discovered a cute sign on a construction site, got kind of excited for architect Will Alsop's latest creation, and kind of a little less excited for the H&M's shitty new (partially-illegal) ad campaign. Also, they're on a Panorama kick as of late, and their latest is of a harbourfront bridge.

It's been a long, hot week in the city for DCist, with record-setting temperatures besieging Washington and generally giving everyone a bit of a the crazies. Judging by their comment threads, the heat didn't make for the best time for D.C. to find out that a Capitol Hill bar is refusing entry to Marines without dates or that their new Metro Chief is considering getting rid of late night train service. But it was a great time to catch up with Spoon's Britt Daniel at the Virgin Festival and get the lowdown on David Beckham's Major League Soccer debut against D.C. EVER. So we wonder what the producers of "Masters of Horror" could have possibly been expecting. Executive producer Mick Garris is quoted as saying, "It's one of the most unrelenting, intense films I've ever seen," and "It takes quite a bit of intestinal fortitude to watch 'Imprint.' It's incredibly powerful."

While the thought of watching something that's actually more intense and horrifying than Audition does worry us a bit, we do think we have the intestinal fortitude, and we wish we could see it.

So here's an idea: The upcoming Indiefest will be screening two short films from the "Masters of Horror" series in a program called "Two Masters of Horror," one by director Dario Argento, and the other by Don Coscarelli. We think they should change that to "Three Masters of Horror" and do all they can to get a copy of "Imprint" to the festival.

OK. We know it's short notice, and that securing films for a festival is hard work. But we can dream, can't we?

That's Crazy Talk!">
We wrote about the City's crappy cable TV service a few weeks ago, so this news comes as no surprise. LOGO, which is owned and operated by MTV networks, will be available to DirectTV subscribers, and to those in the City who get their cable service through RCN. But not to Comcast subscribers. While MTV says they're hoping to cut a deal with Comcast, a spokesman for the company said there are no plans to add the channel to Comcast's digital line-up. The jerks.

Of course, there are two other gay cable channels already available to Comcast subscribers (three, if you count Bravo) Here! and Q Television. But those channels are not part of standard digital cable packages, and must be added on as premium channels, like HBO or Showtime. LOGO, where it is available, is not a premium channel, and shows up in the homes of cable subscribers whether they want it or not. We smell a metaphor in there.

If you think it's as ridiculous as we do that this channel isn't being offered to the majority of cable subscribers in the City, we suggest sending a bitchy email to Comcast. Our New Yorker finally made the arduous trek from the Conde Nast building and across the high Sierra mountains to our little hinterlands mailbox, exhausted. We opened it up, and to our shock, it featured our little burg in an article! (Article is not online, of course). The piece is an excerpt from the book "Oh For The Glory Of It All," by Sean Wilsey, a McSweeney's editor.

OFTGOIA is a tell-all memoir about Wilsey's mother, San Francisco social butterfly and society columnist Pat Montandon; his evil stepmother and A-lister Dede Wilsey; various shenanigans with his family and the Traina-Steeles'; and his own delinquency. San Francisco socialites are set to be scandalized, with Armistead Maupin saying, "there hasn't been a wicked stepmother like that since Cinderella." Yikes!

But what's intriguing to us, firmly ensconced on the San Francisco Z-list -- is that Wilsey confirms that his mother, Ms. Montandon, is the basis for the character of Prue Giroux in Maupin's Tales of the City! No way! Like Prue, Montandon was a daffy society columnist who gets all new-agey, seems a little psychotic, and then goes on a number of vaguely dippy save-the-world crusades, with poor Sean in tow.

Anyways, the articles are pretty entertaining (though not entirely in the good way), and worth a read. Though Sean -- geez, love your mom much? Paging Mr. Oedipus Rex, extension 333, paging Mr. Oedipus Rex.

We don't know if it's a failure of the imagination or simply a lack of inspiration, but we're just not getting enough questions to fuel the acerbic wit machine known as the Essefficist. In order to get you all used to pestering the poor man to answer your nagging questions, we are offering two pairs of free tickets to tomorrow's show at Bimbos 365, featuring The Gift of Gab with friends Lateef the Truth Speaker and DJs Reim and D Sharp (we assume Chief Xcel is holed up somewhere working on some phat beats). You can thank Quannum Projects for giving us the tickets to give to you.

The authors of the best two questions, as determined by the highly scientific methodology of the Essefficist's own, incredibly biased, opinions, each get a pair of tickets. Just so you don't think the deck is stacked against you, the contributors have sworn not to enter -- even though we think Bimbos is maybe one of the best music venues anywhere (Showtime can't be wrong), and that Blackalicious f**king rocks. Send in as many entries as you want, as long as you get them in by noon tomorrow -- there will probably be lots of second-prize winners who will have their questions answered! So really, what do you have to lose? Winners will be announced tomorrow before 5pm, and they can go pick up their tickets when the doors open at 8pm.
