This Weekend: Thread Fashion Event at Fort Mason

Just in time for the holidays, Thread will be having a two-day shopping extravaganza this weekend at Fort Mason Center, featuring wares from the top 100 hand-picked independent fashion and art designers.

Two years ago, we happened on this rare downtown standout called Shotwell. Our first visit made us (literally) squee with joy, because not only did they have fantastic vintage pieces, but also carried a bevy of local designers, like Rebecca Beeson and Gytha Mander. Bag Lady hearts local designers, very much so.

Local Business Overreacts to Mediocre Yelp Review

Special thanks to the on-the-ball tipster who informed SFist of this humorous yet slightly disturbing occurrence surrounding Yelper Marie K.'s 3-star review of Perish Trust, an antique store on Divisadero Street, last week.

Attention Shoppers: Barneys Warehouse Sale Tomorrow Through August 9

We have to admit we're too frugal to even have ever stepped foot in Barneys, but we're a sucker for good deals. Starting tomorrow at 8 a.m. through Sunday, August 9, Barneys will be having a huge Warehouse Sale at Fort Mason Center Herbst Pavilion, which includes 50-75% off designer clothing, shoes, and accessories for men and women. Since we have no concept of Barneys' regular prices, we're guessing we still wouldn't be able to afford the discounted merchandise? Bargain-hunters best be getting there bright and early tomorrow to find out.

Oakland's Shopseen.com Simplifies Shopping Locally

Shopseen is a new beta site that enables users to post and rate photos of their favorite fashion and household items for sale in the Bay Area. (We wonder if any users ever get in trouble for taking photos?) The site is currently holding a contest, in which the most active Shopseen user will receive a $50 gift card from Therapy. The contest ends Friday.

A Mill Valley woman has been banned from crap designer Abercrombie & Fitch's Corte Madera store after she urinated in the retail shop. It seems the rich bitch in question asked store employees if she could use the bathroom. They refused. So, after throwing a tizzy, said lady (and we use that term loosely) stole a "a 5-gallon pail from a display and adjourned to a changing room," dumped $300 worth of clothing (and we use that term loosely) into the bucket, and created a makeshift toilet of her very own. The woman -- described as tall, white, thin, blond and in her 40s -- returned to the story the following day, claiming ignorance of going No. 1. The store, however, refused to press charges. Ah, the secret underbelly of the North Bay. It is warm and sweet.

We're not sure how much we buy into shopping as the panacea for economic woes, but it sure is fun. Two of our favorite shopping events of the year are upon us. Tonight get your fix of local DIY craftiness at the ReadyMade Magazine's Winter Ball and Craft Show. It runs 6:30-9:30 at the Verdi Club (2424 Mariposa St). Expect Indie radness, extreme craftiness, reasonable prices and a cash bar.

Before rolling out budget cuts later this week, Mayor Newsom is helping out the local economy by asking you to do all of your holiday shopping here in San Francisco. To tempt you to get off l'internet and into the stores, a new city-wide incentive program called Shop SF, Get More will encourage SF residents to "visit, shop, and stay" in San Francisco during December and January.

After Thursday's turkey and stuffing festivities have subsided and digested, Friday is when your wallet takes a hit on Black Friday, the day retailers hope to move into the black. But this year, due to our tanking economy, retailers are bound to come up short. (Even Oprah is turning her awe-inspiring "favorite things" episode into a DIY show. Pft.)

Apparently the only way for the economy to pick up is for us all to shop more. True, economists *may* dispute this fuzzy logic, but hey, why not participate in a little personal economic recovery? DIY and crafty royalty (yes, there is such a thing) will all be converging on Fort Mason this weekend for the Renegade Craft Fair’s first SF appearance. Worse case you can check out the hipsters to see what you’ll be wearing next year.

  • On Friday night at around 11:30 p.m., the intersection of Leavenworth and O'Farrell played host to a shooting. It seems that shots were fired from one car into another, leaving two males seriously injured. No deaths, no arrests. Not to be outdone, Hyde and Turk set the stage for a stabbing on Sunday, 2:20 a.m. The victim was rushed to SFGH. Again: no death, no arrests.
  • San Mateo saw its first homicide since 2006. A TGI Friday's employee found the dead body of their manager this morning inside the local chain. Located at 3101 El Camino Real across from the Hillsdale Shopping Center, detectives aren't exactly sure what happened. Although Marji Fields--a regular of the fine-dining establishment--tells the Gate that over the last month they have witnessed "'horrible altercations happening with a lot of the younger crowd...[t]he 20- and 21-year-olds, they come in and they get real stupid." Tell me about it, Marji.
  • Speaking of rapscallions, be careful how you answer the next time one of them tries to bum a smoke off you. Over in Contra Costa County this morning, a teenager allegedly shot a Bay Point man twice after the victim refused to give the teen a cancer stick. Charming. The victim, a man in his 40s, is listed in stable condition.

They're here - the shiny, rectangular all-access passes to your favorite indie-rock festival, Noise Pop. According to their press release, these badges will "...grant access to all general admission Noise Pop shows, film screenings, happy hours and other happenings during the festival." Yes. We want one.

They must. Otherwise the store would go out of business.

No, not Frank Chu -- although a Gav versus a crazy would be most fascinating, indeed -- Carmen Chu.

This was the scene the other day on everybody's favorite piece of landfill, San Francisco's Marina District. Larger version here Of course SUPER-visor Chris Daly took action to keep Segways off of our sidewalks about a half decade ago, but our law doesn't appear to stop folks from just driving around in bike lanes. (It doesn't seem to stop people from riding on sidewalks either, but oh well.) Anyway, you'll be seeing these things in...

Originally starting out as a postcard show, the LAB now invites artists to sell anything they can fit in a small box provided by them. Original pieces ranging from $1-$30.

The DIY cool kids are having their holiday bash tonight, and you, yes you, can get in on the action. We like ReadyMade parties because of all the style tips we get by gawking at all the hipness that surrounds us. The holiday party is especially great because local merchants, makers, and creative people hock their wares for the first two hours. It's the perfect place to pick up a unique and cool present. Follow SFist's shopping credo, "one for you, one for me". Somehow we think even Reverend Billy might approve.

Black Friday, the Friday after Thanksgiving, the day where big retail shoppers traditionally break even for the year! Traditionally considered the biggest shopping day of the year! Is it retail therapy? ....Or is it kowtowing to the gods of capitalism and binding the workers who long to be free?

Blah blah blah soup kitchens blah blah fun-runs blah holiday schedules. All that stuff's fascinating, of course, but here's what we really want to know: Muni, where can we find all the hottest Xmas shopping deals? Aside from Dress Barn, of course. Fear not, shoppers, for Muni's assembled a guide to holiday buying, starting on the day after Thanksgiving and extending to late December. Thanks to the MTA, you are now fully prepared to buy gifts, no matter which Xmas you celebrate: the real one, the Jewish one, or the black one.

How the church appeared on November 13. This Friday -- Black Friday -- Michaela Alioto-Pier's little neighborhood that thrives on ridicule will become a little more ridicule-less. At 9 a.m., Pacific Standard Time, on the day of November twenty-third, two thousand and seven, the store at 2125 Chestnut will open its doors. And at that moment? Apple will welcome in its third San Francisco store, completing the trilogy started by its flagship location on...

On a recent cab ride to the airport, we picked up the November issue of TODO: Little Guide. Big Town. for kicks. After scanning the restaurant, bar, and shopping guides, we came across a map of San Francisco.
