Friend of SFist judy b. is moderating a discussion about San Francisco's criminalization of poverty at the Little Roxie tonight, which is co-sponsored by the People of Color Coalition of the SF Green Party, POOR Magazine, and the SF People's Organization. Sup. Ross Mirkadreamy is scheduled to speak, as is PD Jeff A-Hotty-dachi. 6:30 p.m. and $5-15, but since it's about poverty, no one will be turned away for lack of funds). (Note: the......

The only two things Gavin Newsom is required to do as the mayor of San Francisco are 1) propose a budget and 2) give an annual speech about the State Of The City. Gay marriage, gelling and ungelling his hair, and gadding about town are all entirely optional! Newsom fulfilled item number 2 today at Philip and Sala Burton High, in an hour-long speech (full text), where he announced, among other things: his new......

Last week's winner, the Guardian. The SF People's Organization is having a meeting this Saturday. Letters about guns in the Castro. Everything is better with strippers -- union woes, men against women, and a no-fatties proposal at the Lusty Lady. Hating on fixie bikes -- and big ups to SFist Sarah L for pointing out to us how awesomely combative the comments in response have gotten (typical comment: "My god man, do you have an......

Thanks for sending in more earthquake-related events, guys! There's so many that we're doing another post of upcoming events! Keep 'em coming in and we'll keep posting them. Don't forget, the big anniversary is April 18. The SF People's Organization is sponsoring a progressive's perspective on disasters in post-Katrina America, with a panel discussion on April 17th about how San Francisco can prevent displacement of the disenfranchised in the next disaster. 6:30-8:30 at Gordon......

Last week's winner, the Bay Guardian. The saga continues! Robert Haaland snipes in the letters column about Matt Gonzalez's snipe in the letters column the week before, about an op-ed by Harvey Milk Club prez Greg Shaw that ran two weeks back. Plus, the world's most excellent article about infighting in the San Francisco left -- someone, please option this for TV! It's totally next season's Lost! They could call it Left! This week's op-ed is by an activist in the leather community about joining the SF People's Organization; we look forward to next week's angry response in the letters to the editor! It doesn't really matter what else is in the paper (but, just so you know, the cover article is about a Russian guy getting deported under bad circumstances, represented by fresh-faced attorney Rocky Tsai.)
The Weekly: Matt Smith on bikes. Dog Bites says the SFIFF is badly run, and Ray Ratto uses the prefix "crypto" too often. Cover article: Ostensibly about a bad-boy photographer, but okay, okay, we only looked at the pictures of naked people, is that so wrong? Icelandic chanteuse Emiliana Torrini. (Why isn't her last name something "-sdottir"?) And Savage Love: foot fetishist, panty fetishist, and STDs.
The EBX and the weekly of the week, beyond the expandotron. ...
