Let's not think about that mauling incident or the possibility that one or both of the Dhaliwal brothers pissed into the tiger grotto, prompting the Christmas Day attacks. No, instead let's think about the bundle of joy born at the Zoo this past weekend: a little giraffe, right. Sure, it was yesterday's news, but the adorable image was just released, and the story wouldn't have been complete without it. All together now: aw. Also,......

Oh Björk! You quixotic Icelandic vixen, you. You dancer on the tongue-tip of the art vanguard. You lucky multi-million-dollar musician. Unlike mere mortals who don't have the clout or funds to access such items, the modern music diva gets her very own reacTable with which to "wow audiences" while on tour this summer, according to Wired.com. SFist Leanne saw it in action herself, at Shoreline, back in May....

Plenty of interesting stuff happened in San Francisco last week, and our readers, as always, added funny, insightful, and interesting angles to the stuff we wrote about. Our fabulous five for last week -- the first week with a new guy in the top spot! -- follows....

For a thorough sampling of the current Bay Area rock/indie/pop/folk scene, look no further than Penny Arcade, a monthly, semi-acoustic showcase hosted by one of the cities most likeable citizens, Raul Sanchez. For the past two years, Raul has regularly packed various venues, such as the Make-Out Room -- now the event's permanent home, Bottom of the Hill, and The Hotel Utah with bands and fans alike. Tonight, come celebrate Penny Arcade's Two-Year Anniversary at......

Hey, everyone -- here are the semi-arbitrary Top 5 Comments of the Week. For this, our fourth week of doing it, we thought it'd be a swell idea to try it out in easy-to-access text form. See below for commenters whom SFist's editors thought raised the game, made us laugh, or were otherwise notable, and click through to read the actual comments as written....

Our infatuation with Tara Wray and her documentary, Manhattan, Kansas, began at the opening shot of a very energetic and young-looking woman on a rooftop in Manhattan, New York, who turned out to be Tara Wray herself, and the creator of the adventurously personal film we were about to watch. She said she always felt like she was born in "the wrong Manhattan." ...

The two SF Indie Fest films we watched on Friday night at the Victoria Theatre made for a very thought-provoking juxtaposition. The short film Mischief at 16th and Florida captured the rich history of an industrial area (and the river beneath it) located just a mere five blocks from the film screening. The feature film The Ballad of Greenwich Village was related to us through the countless anecdotes of the many amazing artists, performers......

All you 9-to-5ers out there who loathe working, Aim Low Kid's got your number. Their debut album, aptly titled, Soundtrack for the New Depression, is a handbook for the thinking working folk. Listen to their track Couple Dozen People and imagine any given day in the Financial District. Since we happen to be engaged to lead singer Daniel Phifer, we get asked what Aim Low Kid sounds like quite a lot. We usually get frustrated......

Thursday night's Of Montreal show at Bottom of the Hill was a great party, and we enjoyed seeing them at such an intimate venue. When we bought our tickets last month, both Gold Chains and Enon were billed to open the show, both of whom we hadn't heard from in a long time. Enon ended up canceling, and Gold Chains was solely in charge of getting the party started with his new cohort Miss Tiny. ...

A recent article in the New York Times titled, "Can Polyester Save the World?" got us really clammy at the thought of wearing man-made fibers 24/7 (like how we feel when we wear polyester), but it also got us thinking about how our clothing has a pretty big carbon footprint in terms of how it's made and the care involved, such as washing/drying, dry-cleaning and ironing. In addition, "fast fashion" trends, which are enabled by cheap clothing chains like Target and H&M, have added clothing to the list of items piling up in our landfills. ...

For those unfamiliar with the phenomenon that is "Ghost Ride the Whip," let us get you up to speed. Ghost riding is when the driver of a car puts it in neutral or allows it to idle, and then the driver (and passengers) exit while it's still rolling and dance beside it or on the hood or the roof. It was started in the Bay Area and was coined by Mac Dre and later popularized by E-40, as part of the hyphy culture, which features ghost riding as one of the automobile tricks done in sydeshows....

SFist Jon's plastic bag story from last week prompted such a good exchange in the comments section, we thought we'd expand on them in a post. The mantra "reduce/reuse/recycle" is something many of us in San Francisco already practice, but as consumers, we need to pull more weight in the effort to make San Francisco "greener." Please feel free to add your ideas and feedback in the comments. ...

Those of us you who live or work near the Nob Hill/Russian Hill/Chinatown area are conveniently located near the biggest-bang-for-your-buck yoga in town. Yogic Motion's intro offer of $20 for 30 days of unlimited yoga is impossible to resist and a very smart tactic. "Everyone can go to the ATM and withdraw a twenty," explained Yogic Motion owner Brian Monnier. And for that $20 you can do yoga every day for a month. Then you will be hopelessly hooked. And hey, we gotta giveaway too. Start off your new year right and enter to win a free month of unlimited classes at Yogic Motion. ...

We like to think of Liz Ross' music as sounding like an electric pillow. Her voice lulls you into sweet, poppy melancholy while her guitar sends a current through your spine, but we like how one of her other fans described her voice better: "as the feeling one gets when the sun finally rises after being up all night with horrible insomnia." Liz is a former member of Hannah, Lessick, Lines In Analog Sound, and......

We weren't sure what to expect when entering the Dickens Fair for the first time this past Sunday. We (as in the contributor of this story) had never even heard of this curious event until just a couple of weeks ago. When we eagerly checked out their web site, we learned that it's been around since the '70s and was started by Red Barn Productions and the Patterson Family, the people who ran the Renaissance Pleasure Faire at Black Point in Marin before it closed. Wikipedia also informed us that San Francisco's fair is "the oldest, largest, and most successful of the modern Dickens festivals outside of England."...

Monday night's show at Café Du Nord was evidence that San Francisco loves Margot and the Nuclear So and Sos. This makes those of us from their hometown of Indianapolis quite proud, especially considering how dauntingly aloof San Francisco audiences can often be. ...

We love how warm and unpretentious the 24th and Bryant area is. We especially love the harmonious balance between the hipster and Latino cultures which is threatening to become less and less harmonious due to the construction of various sets of condominiums in the area. Each business has its own distinct personality that enhances the overall vibe of the neighborhood, and that's the way we like it. ...
