What's There To Love About The East Bay? Lots! Next Up: New and Creative Theater
SFIFF: Private Fears In Public Places
We knew very little about the SF Int'l Film Fest's Private Fears in Public Places but were intrigued by the title. Turns out the play is based on an English play by the same name (which explains the British subtitles), and the French movie is actually called “Coeurs” or “Hearts,” which is definitely not as good of a title.
CounterPULSE Second Anniversary Show!
We knew very little about the art space & resource center, CounterPULSE, before attending their Second Anniversary Show on Sunday night (yes, we mistakenly kept calling it "Compulse"). This is their second year in a new location at Mission between 9th and 10th. We might’ve missed the modest front, except for the large artsy crowd milling out front (trying to squeeze in off the long wait list).
SFWFF: Youth Films
This is a little late to be posted- but we did just want to give a nod to the youth short films screening as part of the SF Women's Film Festival on Saturday afternoon in the Audre Lorde Room at the Women’s Building. The whole viewing lasted about an hour or so, but it managed to showcase a whole lot of youth talent in a brief time period.
SFWFF: Opening Night (LGBTQ Short Films)
Yesterday was the opening night party of the Women’s Film Festival ! The night kicked off with LGBTQ films and included acoustic band Trusting Lucy performing before the show, trailers for movies on everything from Gwen Araujo to trannie-bike-messenger-speed-addicts, shorts by writer/ director/ actress and general lesbian-icon Guinevere Turner, and then a Q&A with Ms. Turner herself (yes we have a new crush).
What’s There To Love About the East Bay? Lots! A Penny-Pincher’s Guide to Albany
This weekend we started our taxes, so we are now feeling particularly poor. In need of activities that that will suit our penny-pinching ways, while also distracting us from the cold hard reality of our financial state, we turn to Albany, a little town north of Berkeley.
Michael Pollan Cares About the Farm Bill (And You Should Too)
Our favorite Bay Area foodie starchild, and Omnivore’s Dilemma author, Michael Pollan, was at it again Wednesday night. He moderated a panel to discuss the 2007 Farm Bill on the UC Berkeley campus. The Farm Bill -– which gets reviewed about every five years – has been under the spotlight this year.
Your Sunny Weekend: Thai Brunch in Berkeley (Yet Another Reason to Visit the East Bay)
If it’s as beautiful and warm as everyone says it will be this Sunday, then we’re headed to the Thai Buddhist Temple in Berkeley for the Sunday brunch. We haven’t been in awhile, and we’ve been craving that Mango Sticky Rice. Brunch in general is not usually our thing -- the long wait to get seated for an over-priced generic egg scramble usually makes our tender hangovers worse and not better.
But the brunch at Wat Mongkolratanaram in Berkeley does not disappoint. It’s a weekly fundraiser for the temple. For around $5, you can get a tasty and pretty authentic Thai meal, including their delicious mango sticky rice for dessert.
