The San Francisco Int'l Asian American Film Festival starts tomorrow, and we have five pairs of tickets to give away to the Castro Theatre screenings this weekend.

The first set of tickets is for Dirty Hands on Saturday night. "Street artist David Choe’s complex life and beguiling work is obsessively chronicled in this documentary by Harry Kim. Following Choe’s meteoric rise—and spectacular crashes—over the last eight years, Dirty Hands paints a portrait of the artist in all his troubled but creative brilliance." The documentary is also playing at Kabuki on Tuesday afternoon.

Dirty Hands | SFIAAFF | Castro Theatre, 429 Castro St, SF | Saturday, March 14 at 9:30 p.m. and Tuesday, March 17 at 4:30 p.m. (at Kabuki) | $10

The movie follows Suzanne (the wonderful Juliette Binoche) and her son Simon in Paris, just as they hire a new nanny, Song, from Taiwan. Although Suzanne isn't really the "gentle" part of the movie I was talking about -- Suzanne is often rushing about, arguing with neighbors and going to work at a puppet theater (yes, a puppet theater) -- she brings together the different characters in charming ways, despite her "harried" persona.

This worked for and against us: once there, we discovered that the movie was actually a two-parter, a la Kill Bill, and we would only be privy to the first half. We weren't sure how to take this news (Will we be sorry?) but after watching the Death Note, there was only one reaction to be had:

We were cursing the heavens/movie gods for breaking the movie in two, with no. clear. release. date. of the second half.

But don't let that stop you from watching the movie: Death Note is a very well-done film about a law student named Light Yagami, who finds a notebook that can kill anyone whose name you write on its pages. Light uses the notebook to kill criminals and develops a following on the internet under the name Kira. As more and more criminals die, the police department decides to investigate Kira, with the task force headed by Light's own father. Light becomes desperate to cover up his identity after a genius investigator, L, begins to suspect Light is the killer and begins his pursuit of Kira/Light.

A Gentle Breeze in the Village was adapted from Fusako Kuramochi’s popular manga series Tennen Kokekko, and one of the young, female characters in the film is a talented manga artist.

There are two more screenings of the film during the San Francisco International Asian American Film Festival. The film shows today at 4:30 p.m. in Berkeley at the Pacific Film Archive Theater, and it will be screening again at Sundance Kabuki at 6:30 p.m. on Monday.

The film kicked off SFIAAFF's spotlight tribute to Wayne Wang. Wang will be in person at all screenings of his films: Princess of Nebraska--sister film to A Thousand Years of Good Prayers, The Joy Luck Club, and Life is Cheap... But Toilet Paper is Expensive.
