SF Libertarian Examiner Wants to Tell You Something

SF Libertarian Examiner Wants to Tell You Something

Anti-reduce, reuse, recycler-er Justin Clarke, AKA SF Libertarian Examiner, would like to tell you something. He would like to tell you that Newsom's alleged plan to criminalize not recycling stinks worse than Ayn Rand's rotting corpse. "Whether you think that recycling is valuable or not (I vote not)," Clarke muses, SFPD shouldn't force you to recycle in the same way "that the police shouldn’t be in charge of getting you to change your underwear." (Which, for argument's sake, they SHOULD be in charge of you changing your underwear. That, and not wearing flip flops, forbidding you to wear Drakkar Noir, and to demand you take regular showers. Really, there's no reason the barrel of a gun should not enforce these rules.) more ›

Emergency 911 Tapes of SF Zoo Tiger Attacks Released

Emergency 911 Tapes of SF Zoo Tiger Attacks Released

Less than a week after the fatal tiger mauling at the SF Zoo, much of the news that has (slowly) unraveled from the Christmas Day tiger attacks has been disheartening. From the downplayed info about the too-short tiger pen fence, conflicting evidence that the three boys taunted the Siberian tiger just before the attack, and that emergency protocol wasn't followed by SF Zoo employees, there are more chin-scratching facts to add to the list. Take, for example, the lack of concern the two brothers felt for their dead friend, Carlos. According to a law enforcement source, as the brothers were being transported from the zoo to the hospital, "one brother told the other not to talk to anyone." The source went on to say that "they were more concerned with their car in the parking lot and that it would be okay." (Sure, people have different reactions in time of grief, but still: Ouch.) more ›

Wiesel's Wispy Whacker Pleads Wacky

Wiesel's Wispy Whacker Pleads Wacky

The man accused of assaulting and kidnapping Elie Wiesel -- attempted kidnapping, false imprisonment, battery, stalking, elder abuse and hate crimes, to be exact -- changed his not guilty plea to one of insanity today. Earlier this year, if you recall, Eric Hunt, 23, stalked and dragged the Nobel Prize winner and Holocaust survivor from an elevator at the Argent Hotel (recently re-branded Westin San Francisco Market Street, even though it's totally located on... more ›

Smash-and-Grabs Slowed

Smash-and-Grabs Slowed

Perhaps in an effort to appease the masses for screwing them over on insane parking ticket allocations, the San Francisco Police Department, the Mayor's Office, and city prosecutors are working together to stop the city's most "overlooked crime": smash-and-grab auto burglaries. (Also known as "Boosts." Oh, that's fun name!) With an average of 41 smash-and-grabs per day in SF, the Mayor's office created a special task force that arrests one boost-happy hoodlum per week,... more ›

Oh No, Ed Jew!: Confidently Needing More Time

Oh No, Ed Jew!: Confidently Needing More Time

Regarding his Fazio-free residency case, Ed Jew's attorney Stuart Hanlon came to court minus one Mr. Jew today. According the SF Examiner, Hanlon told reporters that "Mr. Jew is not here today...he’s confident. He's working in his flower shop. He’s confident, I’m confident...[b]ut I need more time to get ready." This begs the questions, does he also have confidence in sunshine? Does he have confidence in rain? Also, Ed's working at his flower shop... more ›

Homeless People Swept Up At Golden Gate Park

Homeless People Swept Up At Golden Gate Park

The city provided a continental breakfast of "coffee, bagels, orange wedges, and blueberries" (delicious!) as well as temporary encampment tents for those that they evicted from Golden Gate Park at 4:30 a.m. this morning. (You can read Chron's article about it here, and SF Examiner's here.) more ›

And It Burns, Burns, Burns, the Ring of Fire, the Ring of Fire

And It Burns, Burns, Burns, the Ring of Fire, the Ring of Fire

When we last left the bonfire debate at Ocean Beach, it was looking like there was going to be a crack down. Considering we have friends who went down to the beach over the weekend to burn some Christmas trees, we don't think anything has happened as of yet. Well, it looks like a compromise is set to take place as officials are in talks with "bonfire advocates" to build about twenty fire rings where bonfires could be held. more ›

Gastronomique: Say It Isn't So!

Gastronomique: Say It Isn't So!

Say it isn't so: is it the end of Patricia Unterman's tenure at the SF Examiner? Last week, we could not find her review, and emailed her asking what's up, to no avail. This week, the food section in the Examiner website again links to the Fodor dining guide or to DineSite.com. The old url takes you now to the Ex front page. Did the Examiner drop her column? Was she abducted? Did she choose to enjoy the pleasures of retirement? We sure hope none of the above, it would be a sad loss for the food lovers in SF. At least we can still read her in her excellent guide or eat at her restaurant. more ›

Halloween News

Halloween News

philip_glass-dracula.jpg Just in time for Halloween, Animal Care and Control has issued a renewed warning asking city residents to be careful about bats. San Francisco has seen five rabid bats over the last two years, and ten people have had to go through rabies treatment after being bitten -- so if you see a bat in your house, good God, don't try and take care of it yourself! Call ACC! In similarly well-timed Halloween press ops, the same SF Examiner column we found the bats in says that the California Nurses are holding a rally at Market and Montgomery. They'll be giving out Arnold masks that will say "property of _____," with one of the governor's corporate sponsors listed. Pick yours up between 11 and 1, and you'll be set for those 10/31 parties tonight! No one's a better Dracula than Bela Lugosi! more ›
