Entertainment Commission Postpones Security Requirements Meeting

Mayor Lee wanted "further analysis and study" before moving forward, reports The Examiner. While the odds of the city seeing each rule put into action are slim, that didn't stop privacy rights groups and members from voicing their concern. more ›

Airport Pre-Screening Service Goes Belly Up

Airport Pre-Screening Service Goes Belly Up

A company that provides a service we never even heard of called the Clear Registered Traveler Program has abruptly gone out of business, KCBS reports. Clear operated special security lanes at 20 airports around the country, including all 3 Bay Area airports, purporting to provide (for a $200 annual membership fee) a pre-screening service for frequent travelers that would allow them to scoot through security as if they were trusted government dignitaries. But as the WSJ puts it, "TSA never was comfortable with the notion of 'trusting' any travelers, so the security benefits of a Clear card boiled down to getting a special lane and some staff to help carry plastic tubs for you." Yeah, no wonder it flopped. more ›

SF Crime Cameras Suck

Ever since those shiny yet useless crime cameras were installed around the city's areas of concern back in '05, there has "only been one arrest attributed to the $900,000 spy system since they were put up." What's more, they scare no one, it seems, so the "scarecrow strategy," sucks. Awesome. And unlike D.C. and Rochester who have people watching the crime cameras, SF does not Or rather, didn't. See, yesterday the Board of Supes voted to eliminate funding for the cameras, which means that in addition to the security cams NOT working harder than ever before, we cannot afford to pay anyone to take them down. Smile. more ›

Early '08, New Tiger Security at SF Zoo Goes Into Effect

As seen in the graphic above (pulled from the LA Times), and because of last week's fatal attacks, tiger security improvement is needed. Soon. In 30 days, according to the Gate, SF Zoo will have a brand spanking new tiger-grotto security system. The architect who created the zoo's Grizzly Gulch exhibit, Sam Singer, will also now design the safer new tiger grotto. Although no details of the new tiger grotto designed have been released, we're sure "more safe" will be a bullet point or four. more ›
