Legos Collide Into Super Mario Brothers, With Precious Results
Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid came across these adorable videos, which he dedicates to his "Super Mario Brothers obsessed" nephews, that bring together two important turning points from our youth: Legos and Super Mario Brothers.
SFist Tonight
- Laughing Squid’s Last Minute Unholiday Party: Scott Beale and the gang will be having a most splendid post- and un-holiday party/experiment with social media. Although LS will be "providing some beer and buying pizza, but please feel free to bring some more beer, wine, leftover holiday food, etc." The mood is low-key and geek-filled, and we mean that in the best possible way. Starts at 7 p.m. at Citizen Space.
- Ben-Hur (1959): Not only did this William Wyler-directed epic saga about a Jewish prince sold into slavery (and something or other about bare chests and chariot racing) win a record-breaking 11 Oscars, but finely-aged ham Charlton Heston also picked up the best actor award for it, too. See, miracles really do happen. Screens tonight at 7 p.m. at The Castro Theatre; $6-9
- Barracuda: (Now, wouldntcha?) DJs Damon, Heiko, and Phillie Ocean turn what could be an ordinary '80s night into something extraordinary. Chic, rather than humorous or ironic, '80s attire is highly encouraged. The beats go from 9 p.m. to 2 a.m. at 111 Minna Gallery; $5-10.
Splat: Pie Fight Tonight
Screw the cardboard tube battle, this sounds like something that needs to happen every night. This evening at 5 p.m. sharp, head on down to the tourist epicenter of San Francisco, the Powell Cable Car turnaround, for what will be a massive pie fight. According to Mr. Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid, SF0 player Herbie Hatman is organizing a formal-attire pie fight (think Mabel Normand, Keystone Cops) which will get all up in...
Behold: Life-Size Mouse Trap
Remember this game? Well, we don't remember the game's competitive aspects -- does anyone? -- but we remember setting up its trap over and over and over until it finally broke. And over at Laughing Squid, Scott Beale caught a life-sized version of the game at the Maker Faire 2007. (Yes, any fair ending with an "e" is cause for great alarm, but this Mouse Trap overrides that fear.)

Chicken v. Wolf v. Audience
Last night's innovative Chicken John/Josh Wolf Mayoral debate brought in "a dozen or so citizens," artists, and political fetishists. Even though it was on a Sunday night, anyone who cares about politics, SF, and progressiveness shouldn't have missed it.
For Your Viral-Marketing (Dis)Pleasure: Cloverfield
The cherished Scott Beale brought to our attention the following bit of, well, awesomeness. We know, we know -- we’re no longer supposed to fall for ultra-annoying viral marketing bullshit. And producer JJ Abrams finally lost us. (Heh. Yeah. Sorry.) And, no, we have yet to see The Transformers, for which this clip is said film's trailer. But we're tired of doing the dance, so we give in, modern marketing scheme. And after several viewings, we can’t stop watching and wondering what the root cause is for this steroidal rage on poor, brittle New York City. Happy now?

Locally, the big news was the second best blog party last Friday thrown by TechCrunch down in Menlo Park. Scott Beale was commissioned to take the photos, including the one above featuring an uneasy handshake between Valleywag's Nick Douglas (left) and his favorite whipping boy, TechCrunch founder Michael Arrington. Nick had been bumped off the exclusive invite list, but Michel must have relented. If he had been dis-invited, apparently crashing the party was not an option.

The good news is that the first battle in the legal fight against the NSA's wiretapping program has been won by everyone who doesn't work for the NSA. The bad news is that internet-enabled vigilante mobs could be the next big fad here in the States. Eh, we're too busy applying a new Dasani-branded profile treatment to our MySpace profile and checking out some of the videos.

Man, here we are all nostalgic listening to Endtroducing, and the blogosphere pays us back with some serious synchronicity -- all sorts of funky-fresh music! We're totally drooling over this new Soul Sides compilation from O-Dub, on vinyl no less! Kid Kameleon posts not one, not two, but three mixes from three different DJs, including one of his own. Mesh SF presents a "motherlode" of the 40oz. show. And while this is kinda old, we were reminded by Jason Schulz that Podbop will let you sample lots of bands that happen to be in town.

We'd like to take a moment to break from our usual schedule of links to Gavin Newsom gossip, Web 2.0 snark and other Frisco-centric blog boosterism to highlight the plight of Survival Research Labs. Apparently a quarter-century of creating literally bleeding-edge art from the electro-mechanical detritus of the modern world isn't enough to keep the bulldozers at bay. That's right, having already been blacklisted by the San Francisco Fire Department from ever performing in their home town, SRL is being booted from their compound to make way for f**king condos.

Uh-oh, there's drama between The Daly and The Gavster once again -- GavvyGav brings his veto hammer, but Chris throws the recent reconcilliation speech back at him. Speaking of real estate, an Oakland developer wants to mix light industrial and residential in a new West Oakland construction. Google can't avoid politics anymore, turning away FBI requests for information on the one hand and defending their book search against angry publishers on the other.

We'll start with the 2005 year-in-reviews. Robert Haaland says 2005 "was a great year to be a queer union organizer." Om Malik points out that the number of broadband connections grew 35% last year. And Jenguin literally looks back at 2005 with a selection of her photos.

Kim Knox at Left in SF provides a handy listing of schools on the block for mergers and closures, and the board has decided to shut dow n the elementary school on Treasure Island. Looks like The City won't be able to provide any sort of internet connection to the public at Monday's scheduled public hearing on TechConnect. Maybe one of you has a brand new 3G modem?

In media news, looks like Google got caught with their Craigslist-killer pants down over the weekend when their new database system was accidentally revealed to the public. Their shiny, baggy, flowing pants. Tom Foremski talks to Craigslist CEO Jim Buckmaster about all things classified ad.
