San Jose Cops on the Lookout for Muumuu-Wearing Robber

A San Jose robber who held up a pay day loan store and a liquor store within a week of each other this past July has successfully and brilliantly eluded police. Witnesses were not able to give a thorough description of the suspect, aside from the obvious: He was clad in a "pink, long-sleeved gown with a white and purple floral pattern, along with a tan straw garden hat, white gloves and tan shoes." We wonder if he collected enough loot for a one-way ticket to Hawaii?

Possible San Jose Workplace Massacre Averted

A man recently fire from his job at a San Jose recycling plant was arrested yesterday "while on his way to the plant with a loaded handgun hidden in his boot." According to "Guadalupe Cabrera Miranda, 50, was taken into custody about a half-mile from California Waste Solutions on Berryessa Road at 10:17 a.m." on Wednesday after his son called his former bosses to let them know that his pop was angry and "had armed himself with a gun and was on his way there for a 10 a.m. grievance hearing." Yikes. Miranda was arrested and taken to Santa Clara County Jail, "booked on suspicion of making criminal threats, possession of a loaded firearm and possession of a concealed firearm."

Two people were shot, an unidentified man and woman. The entire park has been barricaded by San Jose police. San Jose Falcon Brings Slow News Day to an End With Flight

Yesterday afternoon, one of the young female falcons that adorn the roof at San Jose City Hall (named Ilahay, which is "angel" in Persian) took her first flight. According to the Mercury News, the falcon "flew over the Martin Luther King Jr. library with ease, but had a little difficulty on her first landing." While reporting on the flight progress of said baby bird's siblings, the Mercury News goes on to call the Ilahay's mother a slut, saying, "Falcon siblings Kya, Tierra and Veer -- all named by San Jose school children -- have not yet been as brave as their sister yet, and have stayed on the 18th floor ledge of City Hall, where their mother and her series of boyfriends and offspring were first noted in 2007." What a tramp. Anyway, bird watchers have since swamped Falcon Cam in record numbers, eager to see the famed bird's flying.

San Jose Spelling Bee Contender Makes it to Finals

The Scripps National Spelling Bee (the annual event where people get to coo at and root for our country's smartest Asperger cases) might have a local winner this year. San Jose eighth-grader Ramya Auroprem moved up to the finals of today after correctly spelling "purlieu," "kichel," and "senryu" (which, by the sound of them, we assume are three different types of curry.) Be sure to cheer on our local gal when she goes for the top spot at 5 p.m. (PST). You can watch it go down live and ABC or on ESPN360.

Today in Death News

Not to be a total bummer this Monday Tuesday morning, but let's get this quick wrap-up over with.

Decision on A's Moving to San Jose Comes in November

A ballot proposition on relocating the Oakland A's to San Jose could be up for a vote as early as November, reports KCBS, following a meeting between A's owner Lew Wolff and San Jose Mayor Chuck Reed. The question remains whether the San Francisco Giants will hold on to their territorial rights on the South Bay, which would need to be decided by the Major Leagues' governing body. Also, have Oakland's residents just given up on fighting to keep the A's at this point?

BART Extension Groundbreaking Today

San Jose just got a little less unsightly. Today, a groundbreaking ceremony took place for the BART extension, which will bring Silicon Valley a little bit closer to the Bay Area. Carl Guardino, CEO of the Silicon Valley Leadership Group, the guy who led the campaign to bring BART to the area, had this to say, "This groundbreaking signifies that BART is on the way. Finally, after a 50-year wait, we're not only [bringing] BART to Warm Springs in Fremont, that construction is underway, we're bringing BART all the way to Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara." Kudos, San Jose. Oh, and here are the rules: You're more than welcome to shop at the Westfield San Francisco Centre, but stay away from Bloomingdale's section; that side is for locals only. Nordstrom, however, is all yours.

SJ Suicide Twitterer Speaks Out

Citing a difficult divorce, which would explain the desire to follow online a Hollywood actress of-a-certain age, the woman who Twittered her attempted suicide to Demi Moore spoke to the press recently. If you recall, Sandie Guy sent a Twitter message to Moore, saying, "Getting a knife, a big one that is sharp. Going to cut my arm down the whole arm so it doesn't waste time." Moore then notified police, who found the victim somewhere in San Jose where she was taken in for "evaluation." Guy tells Inside Edition "I was on Twitter and I didn't realize everyone was going to see it." Guy goes on to say, "I was trying to deal with it in the most healthy way I could think of. I did have a knife next to me." Guy works as an advertising executive. Her Twitter account has since been deleted.

Two small earthquakes struck the Bay Area over the weekend. First, a 3.5-magnitude quake centered 10 miles north of downtown San Jose rattled Sunday morning at 7:47 a.m. Then, a 2.1 tremor hit Sonoma an hour or so earlier that morning. No damages, no aftershocks, no injuries. Boring. It's been ages since we felt a good shock here in the Bay Area, yes?

San Jose emergency room shut down after chemical spill

A Hazmat team has closed San Jose Valley Medical Center's emergency room after an unknown chemical exposure. At least 37 employees, 47 patients were given Silkwood scrubdowns. The toxic mess, it seems, came from a nearby house. According to the Mercury News, "they don't know what kind of toxic substance was released around 8:05 a.m. inside a house on the 3000 block of Yucca Avenue. A barrage of hazardous materials crews are on scene trying to sort out the mess, police and fire dispatchers said." Also, the Merc is reporting that an 18-year-old man died this morning, possibly due to the spill. We'll update as soon as we know more.

San Jose to do Away with Yellow Lights

A staple of San Jose aesthetics, yellow sodium lights might soon become a thing of the past. According to the Mercury News, "the city is looking to replace its 62,000 streetlights with new light-emitting diode (LED) versions that will cast a white, warm glow, could cut energy costs in half, and will use state-of-the-art technology to vary their intensity and timing." The yellow lights, installed in the 1980s and used to reduce energy, have been ridiculed for not only their queasy amber color, but also their similarity to yellow traffic signals. The city plans on having the lights changed by 2022 (?!).

Silicon Valley Looking for First-Ever Poet Laureate

In an attempt to compete culturally with more richly textured areas of California (i.e., San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles, Buttonwillow), San Jose is looking to land its first poet laureate. According to the Arts Council Silicon Valley (who knew?), there is "a vibrant poetry scene in Santa Clara County that doesn't get a lot of recognition." (Again, who knew?) Think you know what rhymes with purple? If you're a published poet who has lived in Santa Clara County for at least five years, you can give it a shot. The gig is a two-year term with a $4,000 stipend, which includes community outreach as well as churning out the occasional haiku or sonnet. The deadline is Feb. 17. You can apply at www.artscouncil.org.

San Jose City College Starts Campus-Wide Smoking Ban

Initiating one of the toughest city college smoking bans, San Jose City College has kicked off an extreme no-smoking ban. In addition to the typical smoke-free rules inside of all buildings, the ban also includes all areas outside of classrooms and in student gathering areas. That is to say, you can't light up anywhere at San Jose City College. Ever. This tough ban on cancer-causing delight was sparked after San Jose City College administrators received numerous complaints from whiny students about "having to endure clouds of smoke coming from smokers near the classrooms."

San Jose police have surrounded the USA Gas station on McLaughlin Ave. at the Capitol Expressway. According to CBS 5's alarming 'breaking news' box atop their homepage, one armed suspect is at the scene. So, you know, if you're in the area and running on empty, you might want to fill up elsewhere for now.

8-year-old Kayla Montez was kidnapped today from San Jose. She is a Hispanic girl, 4-feet tall, 45 pounds, has brown hair, and was last seen wearing a white jacket, a light blue shirt, and blue jeans. According to reports, the fuzz suspects 24-year-old Mark Porter of swiping the girl. He is 5’7”, 180 pounds, has brown hair, and is also Hispanic. The girl was dropped off at a Wienerschnitzel.

Well, this looks like fun -- something San Francisco should have (that is, if the majority its residents approved of anything other than Diego Riveraesque murals.) The 88, a luxury highrise in San Jose (how adorable!) has a piece of public art outside its building, one that you can control using your mobile communication device.

The body of a dead lady was found outside an abortion clinic in San Jose this morning. According to reports, the woman was neither homeless nor killed at the site. Officers also made it a point of declaring that "the woman appeared not to have been killed, then dumped at the building." (Wait, what?) Maybe this is the latest form of nutty anti-abortion protest: Leave your body at the doorsteps of Planned Parenthood as a final act of lunacy? Strange. Anyway, a police officer on the scene went on to say that "Planned Parenthood has nothing to do with this .. It's just a pure coincidence."

While it's still a notably safe (albeit coma-inducing) city, San Jose, unfairly maligned as the armpit of California, was ranked below New York City recently when it comes to safety. According to last year's FBI crime statistics, San Jose came in behind Honolulu, El Paso, and New York City as the country's safest city. San Jose Councilman Sam Liccardo claims, "When it comes to sexual assaults, murders, crimes of a very violent and predatory nature, San Jose is clearly a very safe city relative to its peers." But when Bart opens its much-needed arm down to Santa Clara, we imagine their crime stats will rise.

Although she's no longer the pill-popping, raven-haired femme fatale we had come to love, Britney Spears will perform in San Jose on April 12. We thought you should know this. That is all.

One of the South Bay's "longest-running cultural institutions," American Musical Theatre of San Jose, is calling it quits. The Broadway musical-ish theater will halt all performances this week and file for Chapter 7 bankruptcy.

Because these are confusing times, there are confused people out there trying to do us harm. Take, for example, the foolish opponents of the measure to extend Bay Area Rapid Transit to Santa Clara County. These lost souls, you see, tried to get a temporary restraining order against getting BART to do its job: moving people from point A to point B and easing traffic congestion. But San Francisco Superior Court Judge Peter Busch -- the fairest and most heroic judge of them all -- denied their request. Measure B, which passed by the two-thirds required yes votes this last election, will extend BART to San Jose and spread happiness throughout the land.

The proposal to raise the sales tax in Santa Clara County by a teeny one-eighth of a cent to help fund the (much-needed) BART extension from the Warm Springs section of Fremont into San Jose is expected to pass. Measure B, which appeared to be losing on election day, has "has inched above the necessary two-thirds approval mark in the latest count of absentee and provisional ballots." The 16-mile extension would see Bart stops pop up in Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara. Fantastic news.

Two churches in San Jose -- Trinity Presbyterian Church and Indonesian Christian Church, each located at 3151 Union Avenue -- were defaced by confusing graffiti this week. Spray-painted swastikas and a few Star of Davids marked both churches. We're not sure what the intended message at either church was, but... your guess is as good as ours. But! If you have any info this crime, please call the San Jose Police Department's assault unit at 408-277-4161. (CBS 5)

Oh man. The debate over gay marriage is getting heated in the armpit of California. It seems the Sundstrom family, located somewhere in San Jose, placed a "Yes on 8" sign in their yard. Someone stole said sign. The Sundstrom klan then upgraded to an even larger sign. Then, to make things more interesting, two supporters of gay marriage pulled up in front of the Sundstrom's home, got out, and drew slogans like "bigots live here" on their own SUV. (Which, while accurate, is wrong.)

It seems that over 1,000 custodial artists have gone on strike as of this morning at some of Silicon Valley's most prestigious hi-tech companies, including Cisco Systems and Apple, livid over a new contract. Accordng to the Mercury News:

Don't F*** with a Falcon Mommy
