Starting today, eight Bay Area shelters are offering free spaying/neutering to pit bull owners. Although a few shelters, such as the East Bay SPCA offer the free service year-round, the organizers of Bay Area Pit Fix Week are hoping that by offering spaying/neutering this week, the lives of thousands of pit bulls (and the people they otherwise might maul if not for being fixed) will be spared.

Normally our Sunday mornings are spent walking along the beach at Crissy Field looking out on the Bay and wondering who those people are on the boats and what San Francisco looks like from the water.

What is the Bark and Whine Ball hiding? We had hoped to report this week on the annual black tie extravaganza for the San Francisco SPCA, but SFist’s request for media credentials were denied. We had hoped to tell you the what celebrity dogs are wearing this season, who the hot makers of gourmet dog treats that look better than human desserts are and who is sniffing who’s butt but we weren’t invited so those important questions will remain unanswered.

SFist adores animals. In fact, if we could own 10 cats without the stigma of being "a crazy cat lady", we would. The San Francisco SPCA has a larger number of kittens than they normally do. So, the SF/SPCA is offering specials for potential parents, with the hopes of it helping some of the kitties. During August and September, qualified adopters who attend a free, one-hour "Kittengarden" class before they choose a kitten, will be able to adopt for $75 instead of $100. To encourage multiple adoptions, two kittens including the class, will cost $125--a $25 savings! Adopters, such as SFist, who have successfully adopted from the SF/SPCA more than a year ago will receive an additional 25% discount. What a deal!

On our way up Mission Street to the Metreon on Saturday, we saw a billboard that incited our curiousity. It showed a kitten peeking out of a cage and reads, "10 out of 10 Cats Prefer NOT to Be Tortured by Iams. Stop Iams’ Cruel Experiments on Cats and Dogs."
