San Francisco school board president Norman Yee remains in intensive care after being hit by a car on 4th and Bryant the day after Christmas. However, he's in stable condition after undergoing two spinal surgeries, and in a statement (.pdf) released by the school district, he says he intends to stay on the board and resume attending meetings as soon as he's physically able.
Well Wishes To Norman Yee
Sandra Day "Jay Z" O'Connor
She's going out like Jay-Z, Michael Jordan, and Stephen King -- after her erstwhile "retirement," former Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor's coming back in the game. The former Justice is (.pdf) sitting by special designation on the Ninth Circuit appellate federal court in San Francisco this week. She was on the bench today and will be there again on Friday.
The Supreme Court Bogarts That Joint
By a 6-3 vote, the Supreme Court voted today to overturn a decision by a San Francisco federal appeals court that allowed the use of medicinal marijuana. The court ruled that in cases such as these, federal laws prevail over state laws and so the Feds can prosecute Californians for smoking marijuana for medicinal purposes. There goes having to worry about too many pot clubs in the city. Voting against the ruling were Chief Justice William Rehnquist (probably keeping his options open now that he's got cancer), Sandra Day O'Connor, and Clarence Thomas. Yep, Clarence Thomas. We always got the feeling he was a bit of a party boy.
