The Warriors were 4-1 on their just finished homestand and have won seven out of their last nine games. Since Jan 9th, when they last lost to the Blazers, they have been 16-6 and have gotten over 100 points in each of their games. The biggest number is 14, as in they are 14 games over .500, the first time they've been that since the 93-94 season. For those of you looking for some perspective, Kurt, Biggie, and Tupac were all still alive then. And now the bad news-- that in the West, this makes them only an eighth place seed.

Besides making the playoffs, obvs, the biggest intrigue for fans of the W is who their opponent will be in the playoffs. The eighth spot could get them either the Spurs or Lakers (ugh and really ugh). However, with the Suns, Mavs, and Rockets falling, the Ws could move up a few spots and get the Hornets (unknown) or the Jazz (double ugh). What does all this mean? That the West is brutal.

-Candlestick will no longer be known as Monster Park but will go back to being Candlestick. The reasons are complicated-- involving everything from meddlesome San Francisco politics to full on spite by the Yorks-- but we wonder what difference does it make anyways? Some company could buy the rights to that stadium and nobody would ever call it by the corporate name. It is and will forever be the 'Stick.

It's Got to be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

misc

basketball

Golden State Warriors

hockey

Islanders

Kevin Fransden

Nuggets

Omar Little

Omar Vizquel

Patrick Marleau

Ray Durham

Rockets

San Francisco Giants

San Jose Sharks

sharks

Sonics

The Sharks

The Warriors

the Wire

Warriors

Yao Ming

Jon

Warriors 105 Sonics 99- Yeah, the Warriors beat a team they should beat but the best news to hit the Warriors today was Yao Ming's season ending injury. The Ws had been involved in a nine team pileup in the Western Division and had scratched and clawed their way to the eighth and final spot thanks to the largess of the Nuggets, now currently starring in a three-game losing streak. But with Yao down, a team that had won twelve straight now looks pretty doomed. The Warriors should solidify their playoff spot just as soon as the Rockets start losing, something for which they should start doing any minute now. Any minute now.....

-The Sharks picked up defensemen Brian Campbell for right wing Steve Bernier and a first round draft pick. No, we're not sure what this all means either. Apparently, the Sharks thought Bernier would help the offense as he's got good stats and was considered some pretty good trade bait. They also sent Rob Davison to the Islanders for a seventh-round pick and signed free agent goalie Brian Boucher. Shark fans, however, aren't quite happy as apparently, nobody is happy with Patrick Marleau.

It doesn't seem as strong of a line-up compared to last year's line-up: Arcade Fire, Andrew Bird, The Decemberists, Amy Winehouse and of course, Bjork. (And we only named a few.) Is it as exciting? We're thinking, no. But, we were excited to see two local bands come up on the list: Rogue Wave and dredg.

Rogue Wave, an indie-rock band from Oakland, are performing on the first day of the festival, Friday, April 25th. They recently released their third album, "Asleep at Heaven's Gate" on Brushfire Records. (Their first two records were released on Subpop Records.) Zack Rogue, the lead singer and founder of the band, has been featured at Noise Pop 2006 where SFist Emily thought the male-pattern baldness seemed to plague half of the band members. (That sucks.) This doesn't deter these guys from rocking out.

Dredg (officially named "dredg" with a lower-case d) are originally from Los Gatos and have been together since 1996. They officially just came out of hibernation last fall with a performance at Great American Music Hall. (Did anyone go?) It looks like they will have some new music for Coachella.

If it was fast paced, it's all Golden State. If it was slowed down a bit, then the Rockets would take it. Guess which kind of pace the game was played at? Despite the presence of Yao, the Warriors outrebounded the Rockets and held him in check. So much for that size disadvantage the Warriors are supposed to have. For those keeping score at home, that's eight out of nine games the Warriors have won.

-So you've probably heard the Lane Kiffin to Arkansas rumors. We have no idea what the what is but the thing makes kind of sense in a weird sort of way. Kiffin was totally unprepared for the job and kind of looks it. He has the same look on his face that you'd see in Starbucks when a barista who's been on the job for only a week suddenly finds himself running the place because the manager was sick. Throw in all the Al craziness and the fact that the Raiders are the second most dysfunctional franchise in sports (the Knicks are, of course, #1 by a wide margin) and Arkansas sounds kind of inviting. Just think about that for a minute.

-McCovey Chronicles has a really good discussion about the Giants' "Sophie's Choice" dilemna this offseason, mainly in that in order to get some good players in a trade, they'd probably have to trade either Cain or Lincecum. So which one should they trade? Right now, it doesn't look like it's gonna happen, but somebody on the team has to be able to hit the ball. And if you ask us we'd get rid of the Enchanter as something about him just screams "Kerry Wood."

The Warriors are into the semis by virtue of their historic six-game stunner over the top-seeded Dallas Mavericks; the Jazz eeked out a game 7 road win over the Houston Rockets.

The Jazz are the fourth seed in the Western Conference, but in our minds, its the Dubs that enter this series as the favorites. The Jazz are undoubtedly mentally and physically drained after their game 7 thriller on Saturday, while the Warriors are riding a wave of emotion that shows no sign of dissipating.

We're taking the Warriors in five. Considering that we were one of the few publications to go on record picking the Warriors to beat Dallas, in six games no less, and considering that we ran the table in first round of the Western Conference playoffs -- we even got the number of games right for every series except San Antonio-Denver (we picked Spurs in six instead of five games) -- we feel totally confident in sending you to Vegas with your life savings and the Warriors in five. In fact, it looks like many of you already have -- Point Spreads.com is reporting that 68 percent of the early spread money and 92 percent of money line bets thus far have been on Golden State.

The Beard is calling all comers, but the Utah Jazz will have no answer for him or the Warriors in their second-round Western Conference playoff series. Photo from espn.com.

This series will be a case study in opposite styles and a fascinating battle of wills between head coaches Don Nelson and Jerry Sloan. Both are stubborn, grizzled grand masters who have more than 2,000 NBA victories (and no titles) between them. Both will try to impose their style of basketball on the series or die trying. Nelson, of course, will seek to overwhelm Utah with the frenetic, madcap run-and-gun smallball; Sloan will try to slow things down to a crawl with suffocating defense, half-court sets, and ball control.

Utah presents somewhat of a puzzle for the Dubs because they are really a team without superstars. Forward Carlos Boozer (24.6 ppg; 11.0 rpg) is a grave and gathering force down low, but beyond Boozer, Utah is really a team built on the idea of being greater than the sum of its parts. That will make it hard for the Warriors to focus on any one player, but it will also make the Jazz game plan extremely limited and highly predictable. Utah has plenty of size in big men Mehmet Okur, Andrei Kirilenko, and Matt Harpring, but the Warriors will counter with speed, speed, and more speed. Matt Harpring against Jax -- who you gonna take? Exactly.

Once again, we expect the Warriors guards to completely overwhelm the Utah backcourt. If healthy, Baron Davis will continue his MVP performance and Stephen Jackson, Jason Richardson, and Monta Ellis are going to absolutely eat former Warrior Derek Fisher and fellow guardsman Deron Williams and Dee Brown alive. Defense stopper Ronnie Brewer might cause some problems, but there's only one of him against what will seem to him like six or seven interchangeable Warriors guards.

Check out our favorite Warriors site, Golden State of Mind, for all the pregame analysis you could ever hope to read.

The Jazz have home court advantage in this series and their fans seem almost as hungry for playoff success as the Warriors' fans. But look for the Warriors to take game 1, take the home court advantage, and take the Jazz' legs right out from under them with a massive, overpowering effort tonight. We've got the Warriors by 20 points.

So, once again, that's Warriors in five. You heard it hear first, again. Oh yeah, and the Spurs in six.

The Warriors: On the Rebound

Hey, here's a couple of news flashes for you: on Wednesday night the Warriors won, on the road, b...

SF News

baby

Baron Davis

basketball

blogs

Boston

Bucks

celtics

court

Doc Rivers

games

Houston

Houston Rockets

In December

Milwaukee

Milwaukee Bucks

News+Sports

on the boards

Paul Pierce

Rockets

Bay Area Sports

the game

The Warriors

war

Warriors

Wednesday

chris

Hey, here's a couple of news flashes for you: on Wednesday night the Warriors won, on the road, by holding a fourth-quarter lead.

That's right, the team's road losing streak of eight games is over after a less-than-convincing 96-95 escape in Boston. Baron Davis carried the Warriors with 31 points and 8 assists, but the Warriors did everything they could to give the game back; it was really an assist from Celtics coach Doc Rivers that gave the Warriors the game. With 24 seconds remaining, timeouts in hand, down by one point, and with the ball, Rivers elected not to call a timeout. Instead, the Celtics ran the only play in their playbook: give it to Paul Pierce and hope for the best. Pierce is a great player, but everybody in the building knew he was going to get the ball, including the five Warriors on the court. They surrounded him and forced a jump ball with just 0.6 seconds left. Game over baby.

So that puts a tiny band-aid on the 1-3 road trip and slightly daubs the road bleeding this year (2-9), but it does nothing to address the Warriors number one problem: REBOUNDING!

It could be a whole new ball game for the Warriors if they'd quit with the little-man's complex and play some size to get rebounds. Graphic from Atarimuseum.com.

This team is getting killed on the boards and it's making every game against every opponent an uphill battle. The Warriors are 24th in the league in rebounding, pulling down a paltry 39.6 boards a game. With opponents averaging 46.3 rebounds per game (rpg), their rebounding differential is by far the worst in the league at -6.7. It's so bad, the next closest team to them in rebounding differential is the Milwaukee Bucks at -5.1. (Side note, the Bucks outribbied the Warriors by 10 boards and won the game when the two teams met earlier this month.) Last year, the Warriors were fifth in the league in boards, collecting 42.3 rpg. They still had an operating deficit, but it was only -2.2 rpg

It gets worse. In losses, the War's are getting out-glassed by almost 8 rips a game; in wins, by nearly 6 per. In December, opponents have averaged 8 boards more per game. Against the Houston Rockets on December 14 in the O-rena, a game they won at the buzzer, the Warriors were outboarded 53-33. Do you think if maybe they had a couple of extra possessions in that game by virtue of a few more rebounds, they mightn't have had to rely on a last-second jumper for the win? Ya' think? On their current road trip, the team has been outrebounded 200-162 and has not grabbed more rebounds than their opponents in a game yet. A 1-3 road trip and 4-7 record for the month are no coincidence.

The Warriors: Thank you Spurs, May We Have Another

What a stinking dog of a putrid rotting corpse of a disgusting disgrace of an abomination of a disgrace of a debacle of a sham of a fraud of a spectacle of a sham of an embarrassment. Or something like that. How else to describe the Warriors recent sleepwalk through Texas.

On Monday night, the San Antonio Spurs spanked the tribe like a teenager's monkey, 129-89; just 24 hours later, the Houston Rockets piled on and beat the living tar out of them, 118-90 -- neither game was as close as the scores would indicate.

Remember all the way back to the first week of the season? The Warriors waltzed in to Dallas full of swagger and energy and broke the Mavericks down like they was a cardboard box on recycling day. Barely cracked a sweat. In the next couple of weeks they went on to topple the Pistons, Jazz, and Spurs (all at home) to push their record to a surging 9-5.

That was then.

We think it was either Santayana or Benoit Benjamin who first impaled themselves upon the jagged, intellectual teeth of this timeless hardwood saw: Is it better for a team to pull off spectacular upsets of the highest NBA magnitude or to take care of business at home and against lesser teams that they should beat and thereby gain solid footing toward a playoff position?

It's now a full week into December and the Warriors are still sitting on nine wins. Well, they would be sitting on nine wins if their collective ass wasn't hurting so bad from the Texas-sized whuppins they just received from the Spurs and Rockets.

And We Can See Those Fighter Planes

If you happen to be walking down the street this week and hear this sonic boom over your head and the street rumble, it's not the Kin Jong Il finally launching one of his <a href="http://www.fas.org/n...

Arts & Entertainment

angels

bars

Blue Angels

Broadway

clubs

District

SF Events

financial district

fleet week

Iran

Kim Jong

Kim Jong Il

love

military

SF News

News+Sports

North Beach

people

Rockets

San Francisco

spoken word

strip clubs

the city

things to do

this week

Jon

Of course, this means there'll be the attendant complaints about noise and from the leftier side of the political spectrum, cries of glorification of the military and this is San Francisco and wasted resources. Which we think are all good and valid points, but on when those planes go straight up in the air, come to a complete stop, and then free fall straight back down and then zoom right over our heads and over the Financial District, that's some cool ass sh--. If one of those Spoken Word for Mumia thingies involved flying at break-neck speeds over the Bay and doing loop-de-loops, we'd be all over that too. We also love watching all the ships in the bay because, well, we like big boats and we cannot lie. And judging by the thousands of people who come into the city to watch the thing, brother they can’t deny.

And speaking of thousands of people, what should be of interest is how all of this is going to affect the supposed crackdown in North Beach. Because there's no place sailors like to go like strip clubs and Broadway is jam packed with them. It's actually one of the cooler things to do in the city during Fleet Week-- hanging out near Broadway around 2 and watching the MPs drag drunken sailor after drunken sailor out of bars.

Yeah we know, pretty depraved behavior on those sailors parts, but give them a break, they'll be in Iran in a few weeks.

Oh, it's a sad day for SFist. Not to encourage undue speculation, but it seems like we have all found better things to do than read this week. Is it that our online reserve queue from the SF Public library is currently stalled, ot that we've opted instead to buy our reading material from one of our fine local independent bookstores? We can only hope that next week is a better one for us all.

Want to know how bad it is? Well, SFist Jeremy is reading "the user's guide for my new camera." Gripping stuff, Jer. Sfist Krissy has "only been reading the job listings on Craigslist and skimming ." Krissy, we've been there, and cannot judge.

Other SFists are hung up on the smame thing for a while. SFist Rain is still making her way through Love and Rockets, her speed probably due to the fact that it's too big to read on the bus. SFist Eve has been reading Watership Down for what seems like forever, as she prepares an essay on it for Spunk [arts] Magazine.

Local Mick Jagger impersonator Rudy Columbini (he does kind of look like Mick, doesn't he?) has announced that he hopes to buy out a 18,000-square-foot residential hotel at Bush and Larkin in the 'loin and transform it into Music City, which he's envisioning will have 55 rehearsal rooms, a music school ("I will teach classes coming straight from the Mick Jagger school of performance,"), recording spaces, and a restaurant/club downstairs ("Like Johnny Rockets").

Columbini is also hoping he can start a music publishing company (unclear if it would also be run out of Music City), and is thinking about targeting the space to solo guitarists and metal drummers. Neighbors (scroll down) are worried about noise (the hotel already has 13 rehearsal rooms in the basement and is already pretty loud), but Mick/Rudy says he'll soundproof and that "it's the grooviest thing that ever happened to this infested little area. Who else is going to come to Bush and Polk and breathe energy and art and culture into it?" (what about A La Turca? Love that place!)

Rudy says that as he gets older and can't do Mick anymore (funny, Mick himself doesn't seem to have a problem with that), he wants to focus on building a music community instead of, presumably, singing Jumpin' Jack Flash all the time. He already owns 17 buildings in the city, including four boutique hotels. He's up before the Planning Committee today.
