A Richmond man charged in a 2024 fatal hit-and-run in San Pablo failed to appear in court in January after the judge reduced his bail last year, and a $1 million bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

In 2024, Charles Michael Johnson III, 30, of Richmond, was charged with murder in connection to the fatal hit-and-run of 51-year-old Ernesto Reyes, who was walking near 23rd & California in San Pablo. As Bay Area News Group reports, Johnson was on parole for a prior conviction for evading police at the time, which involved running over a police officer’s foot.

KPIX reported at the time that the crash occurred on the evening of August 24, 2024, near Richmond High School along the San Pablo-Richmond city limits. Officers found Reyes lying in the street with major injuries, and he died at the scene.

Investigators determined that a silver Dodge Charger, allegedly driven by Johnson, was speeding southbound on 23rd Street when it suddenly veered into the northbound lane, striking the pedestrian who was in the street. The Charger then fled the scene at a high speed, police said. Police reportedly suspected Johnson was racing another car.

He was later arrested and booked into the Martinez Detention Facility on charges of vehicular manslaughter and felony hit-and-run. According to KTVU’s Henry Lee on X, the Contra Costa County District Attorney charged Johnson with murder and hit-and-run that September.

In May 2025, Johnson’s lawyer had his bail lowered from $2.2 million to $200,000, so Johnson could help his unwell mother, while checking in with the court during regular appointments. Deputy Public Defender Tim Ahearn claimed in a bail motion that Johnson was fleeing another car being driven by an armed individual in a mask.

“Although the prosecution alleges that Mr. Johnson was racing another car at high speed when the incident occurred, Mr. Johnson informed the police that he was fleeing a car driven by a masked individual who pointed a gun at him,” said Deputy Public Defender Tim Ahearn, who claimed the charges were overblown, per Bay Area News Group.

Johnson reportedly kept up his appointments for six months, until January when he failed to appear before the judge, who issued a $1 million bench warrant that’s still active, based on court records. A new court date was set for July.

We're now getting some details about a Monday homicide in Richmond in which a man was killed in the restaurant kitchen where he worked.

The shooting happened just after 1:40 pm Monday, according to the Richmond Police Department, and officers were called to the scene at the IHOP restaurant at 3401 Klose Way in the Hilltop area of Richmond. There they found a Hispanic male victim in his 30s, as Richmondside reports, suffering from a gunshot wound on the floor of the restaurant's kitchen.

The victim's head injury was believed, initially, to be the result of an accident, but it was later determined that he had a gunshot wound, Richmondside reports.

The Richmond PD said that investigators were on the scene interviewing witnesses, and no arrests have yet been made. The victim has not been publicly identified.

SFGate got a statement from IHOP corporate, from company spokesperson Doug Shaw, who said, "Following a tragic incident at our Richmond, CA, location that resulted in the passing of a team member, we are currently focused on caring for our restaurant team and supporting the family."

This killing marks Richmond's 6th homicide of the year to date.

In recent years, violent crime in Richmond has been declining considerably, particularly compared to decades earlier when the city of 115,000 had one the highest per-capita murder rates in the nation. The city saw 11 homicides in 2024, and a record low of 8 homicides in 2023 — with 2025 on track to set another record low.

Homicides peaked in Richmond in the 1990s, with gang violence rampant, and in 1991 the city recorded a peak of 61 homicides.

As KTVU earlier reported, city leaders tout the success of the city's Office of Neighborhood Safety, created in 2007, as well as greater police engagemet in the community. But at least one community activist told the station that the drop in homicides was more likely attributable to the fact that "the gangsters, the criminals moved out because of the crime," which brought too much law enforcement attention to the place, and that many of the worst offenders had simply killed each other.

Still, not far away in the city of Oakland, a similar drop in homicides has been seen in the last two years, following a pandemic spike, and similarly lower numbers of homicides were recorded there between 2016 and 2019.

For the third time in a little over a week, 11,000 customers on the west side of the city experienced a power outage Sunday evening, which took about two-and-a-half hours to restore. A planned outage was also scheduled to occur at 11 pm Sunday.

As Mission Local reports, customers in the Richmond, Golden Gate Park, and the Presidio lost their power between 7:45 pm and 10:15 pm Sunday. As SFist reported earlier, 6,000 customers in SF’s Golden Gate, Panhandle, and parts of the Sunset lost power for four hours Saturday.

Per NBC Bay Area, PG&E said a planned outage had already been scheduled for some customers at 11 pm in order to transition the Richmond neighborhood from the loud generators back to the grid. Per Mission Local, District 1 Supervisor Connie Chan, whose district includes the Richmond, confirmed the planned outage was still planned from 11 p.m. to midnight Sunday.

Chan said issues with PG&E’s transformers were to blame for the unplanned outage, per Mission Local. PG&E said it was an overhead equipment failure, per KPIX.

“The citywide power outage illustrates how a privatized utility company like PG&E can use its monopoly power to increase out bills, make profit on the backs of working people and still fail in its obligation to deliver power safely and reliably for San Francisco,” Chan wrote on Instagram on December 23.

Prior to Saturday’s and Sunday’s outages, a third of the city was affected by a massive power outage the Saturday before Christmas, which took 48 hours to restore in some areas. As SFist reported earlier this week, PG&E was offering $200 credit for residential customers and a $2,500 credit for businesses affected in this week’s outages. Per Mission Local, the utility company was covering hotel accommodations and $200 in food costs for affected customers.

There were at least four major sideshows early Sunday morning, three in Oakland and another in Richmond, but the one near Piedmont in Oakland drew 500 people, went on for three hours, and left a probably stolen Infiniti completely torched.  

It is a fairly common Monday morning headline around these parts to see that there were massive sideshows in Oakland over the weekend, especially when the weather is nice, and often in the very early hours of Sunday morning. Sure enough, KPIX reports there were three sideshows in Oakland in the wee hours of Sunday morning, and KTVU adds there was another sideshow in Richmond with “hundreds of people” on hand. But one of these four sideshows that happened in Oakland at Howe and 41st streets stands out from the bunch, as it drew an estimated 500 people, and lasted “between 2:15 am and 5:30 am,” for a duration of longer than three hours, according to KTVU.

KTVU’s Henry Lee got his hands on video from that sideshow, and it’s a donnybrook of donuts, laser pointers, and fireworks galore being set off. KRON4 describes the scene as “a frenzy of illegal fireworks, drivers performing donuts in crowded streets and participants stomping and burning a car in the middle of the public intersection."

About that car. It was a presumably stolen black Infiniti, and in the lower left video above, we see it break down from all the stunt-driving abuse it has taken throughout these proceedings. A half-dozen people jump on the windshield (this quickly turns into a dozen people), and a mob starts just destroying the car however they please. The upper right video shows the aftermath of the burnt car, with flummoxed drivers trying to navigate their way through the scene.

In the lower right video, some guy comes along with a fire extinguisher hoping to put out the car’s flames. A police officer announces on a loudspeaker, “Sir, the fire department is coming. Do not get closer to that fire.”

This did not technically happen in Piedmont, as the above tweet says, but it was about five blocks away from the Piedmont city limits. So that feels like an unusual provocation that the sideshows are creeping into previously unfamiliar neighborhoods. Meanwhile, KPIX reports that the other Oakland sideshows were at 23rd Street and Barrett Avenue, and at Market and 45th streets. The Richmond sideshow was at Hensley Street and Richmond Parkway.

And there’s certainly been some grumbling about a slow-footed police response, particularly in the light of the Sunday night Facebook post below where the Oakland Police Department said that “This weekend, OPD will be collaborating with our law enforcement partners to deploy additional resources on the streets” to prevent “illegal sideshow activities.” That message went up at 6 pm Sunday night, well after all of these sideshows had long finished.

But certainly the Oakland police union sent out a press release through spokesperson Sam Singer that the department had only six police cars available to "address the chaos," and decrying that the department is more than 350 officers short of a full staff.

"Police are doing everything in our power to help residents," Oakland Police Officers Association President Huy Nguyen said in that statement. "We ask neighbors to demand the city council and mayor hire more officers and retain the ones we have now."

But some residents of these sideshow-stricken neighborhoods are dismissive of that argument.

"Poor excuse. Poor excuse. Get in there and do something," Oakland resident Glen Collins told KPIX.

Other residents complain that the department is not making good use of its hefty overtime pay.

"OPD doesn't really respond to things and they like to get a lot of overtime pay, so they usually draw things out and don't react to things," another neighbor named Alexis said to KPIX.

Police representatives have said in the past that, in the absence of a very large and coordinated reponse, a few squad cars are no match for an enormous sideshow, and officers could be putting their lives in danger by intervening among armed and often intoxicated participants.

Thus far there have been no arrests or leads from these four sideshows, though plenty of video seems to have made its way to TV outlets and social media engagement farmers. The Oakland police union is pointing its fingers at City Hall, but some frustrated residents are pointing fingers at the Oakland Police Department.

Yet the reality is that no Bay Area community seems to have yet developed an adequate strategy to deter sideshows, and until someone does, these sideshow stories will remain a regular Monday morning headline.

Police in Richmond shot and killed a man Monday night while responding to an incident where that man reportedly had multiple knives and was threatening to kill people inside a Richmond home.

Not long after 5 pm Monday, the Richmond Police Department got a call that a knife-wielding man was threatening to kill people inside a home on the 400 block of First Street near Barrett Avenue. Officers showed up and announced their presence at the front door, leading to some manner of confrontation with that suspect who reportedly had a knife in his hand, and possibly two. But the end result is that two Richmond police officers shot and killed the man on the spot, as KPIX reports.  

KTVU says police dispatchers believe the man had “at least one knife” and a “second edged weapon.” That station also adds that police do not know if the man lived at the residence, but they do think this was some sort of domestic dispute among family members that escalated to where police were called in.

"Almost simultaneously they received an update from dispatch that the subject had armed himself with a second edged weapon, so at that point the officers walked up to the front door of the residence, almost immediately after announcing their presence they were confronted by an armed subject directly in front of the front door of the residence,” Richmond Police lieutenant Donald Patchin told KGO. “They encountered that individual and unfortunately at that time two officers discharged their weapons and an officer-involved shooting did occur."

According to KRON4, the man was pronounced dead at the scene of the shooting. Police have not yet identified the victim.

Neighbors told KGO there were “at least seven or eight gunshots,” and many of them felt that was excessive. “If there was a knife, I mean police they can stay away,” neighbor Horacio Gonzalez Bera told KGO. “They can stay away and be back. To shoot him just like that there was a lot of shots like da da da da da.”

That said, this will all be investigated via the standard protocol for police shootings, so we may learn a lot more about what happened last night when more information comes out.

A major blaze broke out overnight in SF's Inner Richmond, destroying or damaging five row houses on 5th Avenue between Balboa and Anza streets, leaving one pet cat dead and 35 people displaced.

The fire began around 1:54 am Friday, as KRON4 reports, on the 500 block of 5th Avenue, near USF, and flames quickly spread across three adjacent three-story residences. It became a four-alarm blaze, with 140 firefighters on the scene, trying to keep it from consuming more of the block.

SF Fire Department Chief Dean Crispen tells the Chronicle that firefighters feared further spread of the fire due to the closeness of the structures and the fact that they were all wood-sided.

Firefighters would go on to battle the flames for several hours, and the SFFD public information officer posted to X that forward progress on the fire had been stopped as of 4:37 am Friday, with five buildings sustaining damage.

A total of 35 residents were displaced in the blaze, and a cat that was initially reported missing was later found deceased.

Images posted by the SFFD showed significant flames at the rear of the buildings.

Residents are now being rehoused with the help of the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

A Tuesday shooting by Richmond police that was initially described as a standoff with a domestic violence suspect is being investigated by the California Attorney General's Office.

The Richmond Police Department put out a press release Tuesday about the shooting, which took place at 8:53 pm on the Union Pacific Railroad right of way just west of the 300 block of Carlson Boulevard in Richmond. The department says that officers had been attempting to locate a man who was wanted for a probation violation related to a domestic violence incident.

The suspect was found on the railroad right of way, and officers engaged him in what they said was a half-hour-long standoff as he refused to cooperate with officers. The release does not mention whether the suspect was armed.

"Officers spent approximately 32 minutes attempting to de-escalate the situation and reach a peaceful resolution," the department says. "At approximately 8:53 p.m., an officer-involved shooting occurred, and the wanted subject sustained fatal injuries."

As Richmond Confidential reports, the AG's office was quickly involved, as is protocol with officer-involved shootings. And the Richmond PD issued an update to their release, on Wednesday, saying, "The subject refused to submit to arrest, and a standoff ensued. During the standoff, the suspect wielded an object that appeared to be a knife. The subject ignored multiple commands to drop the object."

The object turned out to be a knife sheath.

It's not yet clear how many police officers fired on the man, who was killed at the scene.

The California Department of Justice’s Special Prosecutions Section within the Criminal Law Division is now conducting an independent review of the shooting, and the Contra Costa County DA's office is investigating as well.

Three teens and an 11-year-old were in a stolen Infinity G35 that crashed into two trees and a pole in Richmond early Monday morning, leaving a 14-year-old girl dead, and her 11-year-old sister hospitalized.

A car that had been reported stolen crashed into two trees and a pole at around 5:15 am Monday morning in Richmond, resulting in the death of a 14-year-old girl, according to KTVU. The girl’s 11-year-old sister was also hospitalized and is in critical condition as of early Wednesday morning. And the only other two occupants of the vehicle were two 15-year-old boys who fled the scene, so clearly someone too young to drive was driving this stolen Infinity G35.

The condition of that vehicle is seen in the above report from the Grandview Independent, which notes that the Richmond Police Department received two early morning alerts from iPhones indicating there had been a serious car crash.  

“Officers responded to the area and located a heavily damaged Infinity G35 resting in the northbound lanes of Canal Blvd,” that department said in a Tuesday Facebook post. “Officers located one occupant, a 14-year-old female, ejected from the vehicle and with fatal injuries. Officers located another occupant, an 11-year-old female, suffering from significant injuries. The 11-year-old victim was transported to a local trauma center, where she remains in critical condition.”

Police also say there were two 15-year-old boys in the car when it crashed, and fled the scene of the accident, but both have since been located and questioned. One boy was found at a hospital seeking treatment for his own injuries, the other was found at a private residence in Richmond Monday night.

And they’re apparently giving different accounts of who was driving the car. The Richmond PD says that “Investigators will follow up on additional leads, including DNA evidence, to determine which occupant was driving during the crash.”

The Infinity G35 had been reported stolen to the San Pablo Police Department on Saturday, October 12, just two days before the fatal crash.

The Richmond PD added in their statement, “We are saddened by this senseless tragedy that has resulted in the loss of such a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victim's family and the remaining victim who remains hospitalized.”

An East Bay woman has crocheted what appears to be the world's longest scarf at 982 feet long, and that scarf’s measurements are currently under review to grant her the Guinness World Record.  

The Bay Area has been on something of a roll lately with setting world records. At last October’s Half Moon Bay Pumpkin Festival, we saw the world record for largest pumpkin ever grown. Last month, a team of UC Berkeley students appears to have set the world record for the fastest-ever “BART Speedrun” of all 50 BART stations. And now KTVU brings us the news that a Richmond woman is having her world record attempt being reviewed by the Guinness Book of World’s Records for the world’s longest scarf ever crocheted.

How long is this scarf? It’s 982 feet long. For perspective shown above by the apparent champion knitter Daisy Ptak, the Eiffel Tower is 984 feet tall. So yes, this scarf is only two feet shorter than the Eiffel Tower is tall. KTVU estimates the scarf as being the length of three football fields.

Ptak is seen above with part of the scarf at Monday’s measuring ceremony, and says she worked on the scarf whenever she could find the time. "At the movies, at restaurants, sports games, sitting in my camp chair working away," she told KTVU. “But it all paid off."

According to Richmond’s Grandview Independent, the current record-holding scarf is 840 feet long. So Ptak appears to have beaten the old record, figuratively speaking, by a mile.

The scarf still has some verification process to be completed before Ptak is officially awarded the Guinness World Record.

Monday’s measuring ceremony was at Richmond’s Craneway Pavilion, a site that in 2016 set the world record for most Rosie the Riveters in one place. Though Ypsilanti, Michigan broke that record two years later.

Police in the East Bay don't exactly have the bandwidth to track down stolen vehicles. But the San Francisco Shakespeare Festival thought for sure someone would have spotted their stolen 12-person passenger van, with their name and logo emblazoned on it, by now.

The van, nicknamed "Vannanigan," was stolen on February 20 in Oakland. SF Shakes marketing director John Western tells Bay City News that they have reason to believe the van is in Richmond somewhere — based on a couple of Fastrak transactions and failed attempts to use a gas card that was in the van.

"We thought by now somebody might have spotted it," Western says to Bay City News — assuming that no one has painted over the obvious logo yet, which is on the driver's side.

SF Shakes, which performs one Shakespeare production in local parks every summer, does a touring production each spring — from February to May — that travels to different schools around California. It's a one-hour, "thoughtfully cut" version of a play, and this year they're doing "As You Like It."

Western says they've been getting by the last couple of weeks with a rental van, but they would very much like their van back — which also had some sets, costumes, and props in it. Anyone who sees it is asked to email tleavitt@sfshakes.org.

If that fails, they are looking to raise money for a new van — and/or seeking anyone who may have a van of a similar size to donate.

This year's free-to-the-public production from SF Shakes will be The Tempest, and it comes to SF's McLaren Park in September.

Donors will have a chance to help out, if the group doesn't find their van, on April 20 when they hold their annual fundraising gala and auction.

The California Bureau of Firearms raided a home in the East Bay city of Richmond, and arrested a man for having nearly 250 guns and a million rounds of ammunition. And for good measure, the fellow had already been prohibited from owning weapons.

California Attorney General Rob Bonta announced on Thursday that the state’s Bureau of Firearms raided a home in Richmond, according to the Chronicle, a raid that actually happened back on January 31. And it turns out they had a very good reason to raid that home.

According to a state Department of Justice press release, the raid tuned up “approximately 11 military-style machine guns, 133 handguns, 37 rifles, 60 assault rifles, 7 shotguns, 20 silencers, 4 flare guns, 3,000 large capacity magazines, approximately one million rounds of miscellaneous caliber ammunition, and dozens of rifle receivers and pistol frames.”

On top of all that, the state also alleges the man had also been previously prohibited from owning weapons. The suspect was not named in the release, nor were the charges he faces, but you can easily assume what several of these charges will be.  

“This arrest demonstrates exactly why the Armed and Prohibited Persons System is vital for the safety of our communities,” Bonta said in the press release. “In our efforts to retrieve guns from a prohibited individual, we found hundreds of allegedly illegal weapons and approximately one million rounds of ammunition. I am grateful for our Bureau of Firearms agents’ and local law enforcement partners' work in getting these illegal weapons out of the hands of this prohibited individual.”

State officers also found several grenades during the search of the man's home. They called in the Walnut Creek Police Department Bomb Squad and Travis Air Force Base Bomb Squad, who determined that the grenades were inert.

The new and supposedly gatehopping-proof BART fare gates are already in use at the West Oakland station, and now BART has announced the next eight stations that will get them. Of course, SF’s notorious Civic Center station is on the list.

BART’s four-year quest to create and install evasion-proof fare gates resulted in a few unsuccessful gate models, but the agency finally settled on a design for the $90 million gate replacement project in August, and installed the first batch of them at the end of December in the West Oakland station. And apparently, the gates are considered successful enough that BART just announced they’re putting them at eight more stations.

So look out, fare-hoppers, as KRON4 reports on the eight stations getting the new supposedly evasion-proof fare gates. To no one’s surprise, the fare-evasion den that is SF's Civic Center station is among them. Other SF stations next up to get the gates include the 24th Street/Mission, Montgomery Street, and Powell Street stations.

Elsewhere on the system, the new gates are also next being installed at Fruitvale station, as well as the “terminus” (end of the line) stations at SFO, Antioch, and Richmond.

Though in a subsequent tweet, BART noted that Civic Center station is getting them first, for reasons that should be fare-ly obvious. According to the Chronicle, BART will “replace the fare gates at these stations in the coming months, with a goal of having them installed by May or June.”

And while the $90 million cost may seem steep, the transit agency has some $350 million in state and regional subsidies that are contingent on BART installing the jump-proof gates systemwide by the end of 2025.

Observers in the wild have noted that the current versions of the gates at West Oakland are not 100% evasion-proof, or at least, not yet. The Twitter video above shows there’s been some degree of “piggybacking,” or people sneaking through on the previous person’s Clipper card tag. But those gates are just prototypes, and BART says they’re working on the problem. “The lag is 1.2 seconds from when you tag and when the door opens,” the agency said in a tweet. “We are working to speed that up and should have fix in the coming (weeks).”

But that’s just one brief video. KGO popped by West Oakland station and did their own informal analysis of whether the new BART gates are really preventing fare evasion. “We were there for nearly two hours. Let's just say, we've never seen so many people buying or adding money to their Clipper cards,” KGO reports. “And during that time, we saw only one person who piggybacked off another paying passenger.”

BART spokesperson Anna Duckworth told that station, "I can speak anecdotally and from what I've heard from station agents, they say it's been a complete game changer."

An East Bay Pentecostal pastor, Victor Hernandez Pineda, has been arrested on charges of sexual assault, apparently involving an underage member of his congregation.

Hernandez Pineda is facing multiple counts of "aggravated sexual assault of a child under the age of 14" and kidnapping, per ABC7.

He has reportedly led the congregation at Iglesia Pentecostes Movimiento de Gloria in Richmond, largely for immigrants from Central America, for the past few years.

The church community is grappling with the allegations. One of the alleged victims’ fathers told ABC7 that he was “so, so angry,” after learning that his daughter was allegedly victimized five times over a span of three years in her adolescence. Other alleged victims also described their experiences to ABC7, with one saying that the pastor had taken advantage of her at the church, and another said that he had taken her out of school and to hotel rooms in the middle of the day.

Richmond police are urging other potential victims to come forward, suspecting that there may be more cases of abuse, according to KNTV. As Richmond Lt. Patchin told the outlet, “We’re here to give you the resources you need so we would always encourage them to step forward so we can ensure that if this did occur that he’s held accountable to the fullest extent of the law and this doesn’t happen to anybody else.”

Now, Hernandez is reportedly in custody and being held on $7 million bail.
