John Madden, the guy some of you know only from commercials or Frank Caliendo impressions, is actually a big-time sports announcer. Today, Madden callled it quits. The legendary Raiders coach-turned-football announcer explained his reason for quitting to NBC: "It’s time. I’m 73 years old. My 50th wedding anniversary is this fall. I have two great sons and their families and my five grandchildren are at an age now when they know when I’m home and, more importantly, when I’m not." See you on the golf course, John.

Dennis Richmond and His Moustache Sail Off Into the Sunset

this evening (the awesome, awesome episode involving double-dipping and Teri Hatcher's breasts), we were teased during a news break to tune into a very special episode of the KTVU 10 o'clock newscast....

SF News

As

Dennis Richmond

KTVU

media

retire

retirement

Seinfeld

Teri Hatcher

TV

Jon

To say Richmond has been a mainstay would be an understatement. We've lived here for years and we can't really remember a time when Richmond wasn't on TV. We also can't remember a time when people didn't look at the redness in his eyes and wonder if he was stoned all the time. Richmond, who is 65 (!) has been with KTVU for forty years and has anchored the 10 o'clock news since 1976.

Dennis was a rare TV news anchor in that he was actually good. He was serious and treated the news seriously-- we can't ever remember him cracking a joke let alone a smile and he never did all that cheesy happy talk that mars too many a newscast. He just sat there and read the news. In fact, you could kind of say he was kind of boring, but in a good way. As a result KTVU was a bit of a throwback news show, kind of the way newscasts are supposed to be, or were supposed to, or what have you.

Good luck, Dennis--things won't be the same without ya!

Your Oil Spillage Update

Just what's up with our least favorite oil spill dilemma, you ask? Let's find out:

-- After 29 years of military service, Coast Guard Captain William Uberti will retire after the oil-spill SNAFU is over and done with. According to the Examiner, "Uberti was the region's sector commander when a container ship sideswiped the Bay Bridge in dense fog, dumping 58,000 gallons of thick bunker fuel into the bay." Uberti was soon replaced after much criticism came his way regarding how the spill was handled moments after it happened. Sure, after 29 years of service this isn't the best way go out, but...good for him. Well, you know, minus the tail-end of his career.

-- This confuses us a bit: It seems that Senator Dean Florez (D, Kern County) wants to get in some face time via the Cosco Busan fender bender. Why? Because he wants the clean-up company in charge to be present at a hearing tomorrow (Friday). Badly. If they're a no-show, he plans on using his subpoena powers against the firm, the O'Brien's Group, if they won't voluntarily come to a hearing/inquiry.
