SFMTA Chief Operating Officer Resigns

SFAppeal breaks today's biggest (local) story: Chief Operating Officer for the SFMTA, Ken McDonald, resigned today. McDonald, who is in charge of Muni operations, gave no specific explanation for the sudden departure. But before you get all hot and bothered over last night's F-Market f-up, Appeal goes on to report that a "Muni insider we spoke to said that he believes that last night's accident was not related to McDonald's departure, but was 'just bad timing.'" McDonald will go into more detail later at today's 2 p.m. SFMTA board meeting. Until then, check out his resignation letter here.

Oakland Police Chief Tucker to Resign

In a humiliating week for Bay Area police forces, Oakland Police Chief Wayne Tucker announced his resignation yesterday. His last day will be at the end of February. According to reports, "Tucker said the decision was his own and that he was not asked by Mayor Ron Dellums to step down." Which is to say, the decision was Ron Dellums's and that he did not step down on his via his own accord. Maybe. Cynicism and speculation aside, Tucker claims conflict with the Oakland City Council as the main reason for his resignation.

BART Officer Quits

In what's beginning to look like an unfortunate accident, BART officer Johannes Mehserle resigned today after fatally shooting Oscar Grant at the Frutivale BART station on New Year's Day. Johannes Mehserle was supposed to meet with BART police investigators today, but at the meeting, which Mehserle didn't attend, the officer's attorney and his union representative turned in his resignation letter. The BART Police investigation, though, will "continue to seek and examine all available evidence and will continue its full cooperation with the ongoing independent investigation by the District Attorney," according to BART.gov. Really, this is a tragedy for everybody involved. We feel for both parties.
