The S.F. Skate Club, a youth skateboarding program dedicated to providing children with skateboarding lessons and mentoring, hosted an art show last Friday in Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi’s office at City Hall. The show featured a series of hand-painted skateboard decks by local youth skateboarders, ages 8 to 13. Although none of the artwork was for sale, the club was hoping the show would help raise awareness about the need for a skateboard park in Golden Gate Park, near Stanyan and Waller streets.

Supervisor Mirkarimi originally drafted the legislation for a new skateboarding facility in Golden Gate Park; due to concerns from surrounding businesses and neighbors about the kind of crowd the park might attract, however, planning has since been put on hold. Skate park supporters feel the concerns are ironic, because the proposed Upper Haight location is a neighborhood that prides itself on diversity.

San Francisco currently has one skate park, which is basically an empty swimming pool in a remote corner of Crocker-Amazon Park. Built in 2001; the park is rarely ever skated because of its old-fashioned design and out-of-the-way location. A second park is scheduled to open this Saturday, June 28 in Potrero Del Sol at 25th and Utah streets. (Continued after the jump.)

Public Park Closures Needed, Says the Gov

Nature lovers will be peeved.

misc

Arnold Schwarzenegger

Austin

Bay State

budget

California

Candlestick Point

closure

Governor

Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger

nature

park

Recreation

Schwarzenegger

Tomales Bay

Brock Keeling

Nature lovers will be peeved.

Under the budget proposed by Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger today - dear God, just how did we get here? starting off a sentence like that? - nine local state parks would face a temporary shutdown until California learns how to balance its checkbook, pay its bills on time, stops disrespecting their mommas on , or something like that.

Statewide, the Gov is considering closing 48 state parks. Among those close to home are Henry W. Coe State Park, Candlestick Point State Recreation Area, Austin Creek State Recreation Area, Armstrong Redwoods State Reserve, Tomales Bay State Park in Inverness, Petaluma-Adobe State Historic Park, Portola-Redwood State Park, Benicia Capitol State Historic Park, and Benicia State Recreation Area. They all face temporary closure if and when the Gov and the Legislature compromise on a spending plan later this year. And overall, that's one out of five state parks, folks. Egads.

One more thing, according to the Gate, "money will be spent for patrols to keep people out of the closed parks." After these hearings, the Recreation and Parks Department Commission will "make a set of recommendations to improve the agreement that allows a nonprofit to run the public zoo." Or something like that. Although it's an attempt to appease the mayor who would like "'to know how this incident happened and what measures are needed to prevent this type of incident from occurring ever again,'" it sure sounds like a lot of busywork for the sake of busywork. Anyway, according to the Gate, Marisa Lagos deftly explains how the zoo is run, similar to a broken home.

The city of San Francisco is the landlord of the zoo and owns the animals, property and facilities; the Zoological Society runs the zoo, overseeing animal care, marketing and fundraising. The city's Recreation and Park Department provides the zoo with an administrative fee to help with the cost of running it and must approve improvements and animal transactions.

Too many chefs in the kitchen? Perhaps.

Also, here's an image of one of the Dhaliwals brothers. (Well, since it was published in the NY Post, it could just easily be Jada Pinkett-Smith. Or a unicorn. Who's to say?) He kinda cute, we must admit - a decent image. Not as iconic as Paris Hilton being carted off to jail, but noteworthy nevertheless.

This oil covered bird above was found at Fort Baker cove in Sausalito today. It seems that the Marin Headlands are getting crazy sloshed with oil on their shores. (The aerial shots of the spill on SFGate are jaw-dropping.)

So, two things: one, residents who find birds covered with oil should call 877-823-6926. And two, are there any clean-up efforts going on that we should know about? Like, know about right now? Some readers have asked and we'd love to give you more info. We'll snoop around and try uncovering scheduled efforts, but if any of you have scheduled info on volunteering clean-up, let us know. More importantly, it is open for drop-in to non faculty/non neighborhood members. This is where the Jesuit University $78 for 15-use Red Pass comes handy.

Like all good things in life, it comes with restrictions. For instance, Monday through Thursday, Red Pass members can only come from 6am to 2 pm. So we can't go to the Cardio Kick with Deirdre on Monday at 7:15pm but we can Spin with her Sunday at 5pm, or try Tai Chi with Cecilia at 1pm Monday. And when we swim underwater across the pool towards the light, it feels divine.

All things considered, the pay as you go approach is the one for us. To sweeten the deal, there is a sale until April 15th so you can buy 15 uses and get 5 free. Which comes to less than $4 a visit. So if we go twice a week, which for us would be a feat, it would cost $32 a month, roughly the same as joining the YMCA in Tiffin, Ohio.

First is the fact that nobody really knows when those 120 displaced people will be placed. It's not just the fact that some of the buildings are either severely damaged or severely creaky, but that the hill needs to be fortified so there won't be anymore landslides. All this could take months. As it is, authorities are worried that another bunch of rocks could slide down, taking the patio of a condo overlooking the mess with it. Residents of the dangling condo were also evacuated so authorities could assess the structural damage as well as well as determine just how safe things are. Also "red-tagged" (meaning too structurally damaged for anybody to go into) were three other apartment buildings and three stores on Broadway, including the Showgirls club. We might be off on our North Beach geography, but aren't those stores kind of a rock store/head shop/sex shop? You know, the kind of place you could buy a Metallica bong shaped like a vibrator? Or is it just we're always so drunk by the time we get to the end of Broadway that it all blends into one (damn Crowbar).

Because all the buildings were privately owned, authorities told the owners basically that it's up to them to get people to clean and things fixed. We have no idea if that's standard procedure but that sounds a bit harsh. There will be a meeting of the property owners today to figure this all out. As of yesterday, they hadn't quite figured out what to do.

Right now, displaced residents who don't have a place to stay are being housed at the Chinese Recreation Center on Mason Street. Yesterday, they were allowed to enter the buildings to gather their stuff.

All in all, the total amount of rocks that slid down was 30 feet high and 75 feet wide.

I Want 2 B Your Plover - Dogs vs. Birds in S.F.

A few photos of the threatened snowy plover birds of S.F.

Arts & Entertainment

City

City Hall

comments

crissy field

dogs

Golden Gate

golden gate national recreation area

Jim Herd

Pics

Recreation

San Francisco

Jim

You've read about tomorrow's big City Hall showdown over the issue of unleashed dogs on Golden Gate National Recreation Area land. Part of this issue has to do with the 2 Western Snowy Plover Protection Areas in San Francisco, so we thought we'd head over to Crissy and check things out. We saw a few dogs (all unleashed) in the protected zone, but we didn't see any harassment ourselves on this quiet, rainy day.
