BART Sets New Holiday Record Via Noisy Children

Compared to the same time last year, this week BART saw a 20% jump in riders traveling to SFO during the Christmas week. How was this done? Well, according to reports, the dramatic increase was partly due to a "Kids Ride Free" promotion, which exposed itself to an unsuspecting public on 12/22. (Thankfully, we missed this promotion by one day. Lucky us. But tell us, was there an inordinate amount of little people on the trains last Saturday?)

That said, good for BART. While SFist loves to keep Bay Area Rapid Transit on its toes - because, really, someone needs to do it - we giddily applaud the continued success of BART's seamless SFO extension. And, please, warn us the next time you have another "Kids Ride Free" promotion. Not that we don't love children, but ... shudder.

whatimseeing.com has the images and video you've been waiting for: the Thrill the World Michael Jackson "Thriller" dance-off (as well as choice images of today's protest, by the way). We hope it broke the record so we don't have to do this again for at least another year.

All in all, a pretty good routine. Sure, someone is calling out the steps during the routine, and the moves could've been a bit tighter; but we're splitting hairs here. Good job, guys.

It also seems that we've got ourselves another Q-for-mayor-ee in the house, and he likes himself some MJ, for sure. Good moves there, kid. Good moves.

Or "Barry Bonds Is Home Run King*" -- depending on your opinion of him. And he breaks the record during the fifth inning, "hitting a 3-2 pitch from Washington's Mike Bacsik." Wee.

Congrats, Barry, on #756. In your honor, we present to you this sad little fireworks image! You deserve it. Yay, you!

Ohh, Snap! Costas Makes Bonds Look Silly

Notes to self for when we become famous: memorize the phrase "no comment." Utilize it frequently. Take the high road. Don't respond to critics in the media.

Monsters & Critics brought our attention to the latest on the "brains vs. brawn" verbal tiff between Barry Bonds, who's just about to break one of baseballs' most precious records, and Bob Costas, veteran sports journalist and all-around smart cookie.

Barry, who in recent years has been angry when people make comments about his size/stature, went ahead and made a comment about Costas' size/stature, calling him a "midget man" and saying he doesn't know anything about baseball (hmm, writing top-selling books about the game doesn't count?).

Costas' response:

As anyone can plainly see, I'm 5-6 1/2 and a strapping 150, and unlike some people, I came by all of it naturally"

More snappy verbiage from Costas, which was garnered from AP reports, is quoted in the M&C piece. We especially love how Costas finished his thoughts in a classy, de-escalating manner, though:

[Bonds is] under tremendous scrutiny and some pressure. It's no big deal

Barry -- you're about to achieve something amazing. Just shut up and do it.
