Shock G was not an Oakland native, he was born in New York City, and grew up in Florida. But he moved to Oakland in the late 1980s and formed Digital Underground with a couple of characters known as Chopmaster J and Kenny-K, and the cast of the group would expand. They signed with Tommy Boy records in 1989 and had a minor hit with the single “Doowutchyalike” (a track on which Shock G played a lengthy piano solo, an unusual feature in rap songs of the day).

But Digital Underground would become an overnight, international sensation with the 1990 albun Sex Packets and the smash hit “Humpty Dance.” They created their own lane of Parliament/Funkadelic-style silliness with rich and layered musical production, a contrast to the era’s confrontational gangsta rap of 2 Live Crew and Public Enemy, and the Billboard-friendly sellout sounds of Kid ‘n Play and MC Hammer.

The group added an aspiring rapper named 2Pac to their roster in 1991, and Shock G appeared on Tupac Shakur’s first hit “I Get Around,” and co-produced the album on which the track appeared.

Locked in a tight battle for state senate, Supervisor Jane Kim is now seeking headlines in a campaign against a two-year-old music video that she says is "anti Asian-American."

In a press release sent out last night, the Supervisor alleges that the video for the song "Meet The Flockers" by Compton rapper YG encourages animosity between African American and Asian communities and promotes the targeting of Chinese for crimes. As such, Kim argues, YouTube should remove the video.

"The lyrics detail a step-by-step guide to carrying out a burglary," reads the press release. "Paired with the video’s imagery, which juxtaposes scenes of a home invasion with close-up visuals of weapons and framed photos of an Asian family, the message being sent is clear: Asian-American households are vulnerable, and make for ideal targets."

The song, which details a home robbery, may on the surface remind some of Kendrick Lamar's "The Art Of Peer Pressure." However, it is the description of an ideal victim — not the act of singing about crime itself — to which the Korean-American supervisor objects.

"First, you find a house and scope it out," the song instructs. "Find a Chinese neighborhood 'cause they don't believe in bank accounts."

YG, it should be noted, has served jail time for burglary.

While the video was uploaded to YouTube in May of 2014, a recent uptick in popularity (which in a "chicken or the egg" scenario may or may not be due to the controversy surrounding it) has prompted Kim to speak out.

“The lyricism and imagery of this video is deeply offensive to Chinese-Americans, and dismantles community-based efforts that seek to build positive race relations among African-Americans and Asian-Americans,” says Kim via press release.

And she's not alone. Fox 11 reports that Asian business owners have called the video "sickening and distasteful."

"Our demand is simple, Youtube and Vimeo must remove these videos in compliance with hate speech guideline for online content," Kim's press release reads. "We also call on DefJam Records and Rapper YG to denounce this song."

In addition, Oakland-based activist Eddy Zheng, who himself served time for a high-profile Chinatown home invasion committed when he was 16 years of age says that “YG's ignorant and hateful lyrics undermine the momentum the historical Black Lives Matter movement has generated to challenge systems of oppression and further isolates the Chinese and Asian American community."

Both Zheng and Kim say that "In the spirit of dialogue, we would like to invite YG and Def Jam to visit an SRO hotel in Chinatown, and engage Chinese families and activists."

Will the label and rapper take them up on their offer? It's, of course, too soon to tell: But we can only assume that YG is pleased with the recent controversy, as views on "Meet The Flockers" have as of publication exceeded a quarter million.

It all went down on the 800 block of Howard Street at about 4:30 p.m. The group was allegedly approached by a Hispanic man who fired a gun and caused the group to scatter. Despite initial reports, police on Monday said that 2 Chainz was not the end victim, although he was present. Radio.com reports that a member of the entourage fell to the ground while others ran, and that he was approached by the suspect and robbed of unknown items.

According to police, all involved were "very uncooperative" and say they want to handle matters themselves. The rapper's twitter was quiet about the incident until late Monday morning, when he tweeted in reference to it.

What your editor knows about football and rap music could fit into the dish of a contact lens. But what we do know is that 5-year-old Sarah Redden, who raps about the San Francisco 49ers, is rather dope. Listen to her. Downright adorable, this one. Ellen ready. She even reminds us of a young Daisy Barringer.

According to Redden her parents had nothing to do with this fierce ode to the Niners. She explains via YouTube, "Me and my brother wrote all the lyrics and produced the whole video and song!!!!!
We don't know who or what the mad tattoo people are, but it would make a good name for a '90s cover band..

Like others, Andrew Dudley of Haighteration was baffled by the many, many, many $2000 Rap Contest flyers that seemingly popped up all over San Francisco this past weekend. To find our more, Dudley, called the posted number to find out. Haighteration reports:

Turns out the flyer is for the 2Racks Rap Contest, created and hosted by San Francisco-based poet/rapper Sellassie. The contest is billed as “a fast-paced, single-elimination rap competition where emcees perform original songs head to head in front of celebrity and industry professional judges, competing for a $2000 cash prize.”

Other cities, like Chicago, Atlanta, Honolulu, Orlando, Seattle, and Los Angeles, will also host a throwdown. San Francisco's goes down on August 20.

Huh. It looks like the Oakland A's do in fact have one thing going for them that the Giants don't: M.C. Hammer bobbleeheads. The A's will be the first MLB team ever to award bobblehead transmogrification to a rapper. "Hammer worked as a clubhouse assistant for his hometown squad Oakland Athletics between 1973 and 1980 and the MLB squad will be the first baseball team to award a bobblehead doll to a rapper," notes MTV.

The A'a will host M.C. Hammer Bobblehead Night as part of a "80s Weekend" promotional event. Which is odd since, as Best Week Ever points out, the majority of Hammer's success happened during the '90s.

Anyway, M.C. Hammer Bobblehead Night happens on Sunday, July 17.

Nate Dogg, Dead at 41

Well know for his hooks, as well as his collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and <...

SF News

celebrity

hip-hop

music

nate dogg

rap

Brock Keeling

Well know for his hooks, as well as his collaborations with Snoop Dogg, Dr. Dre, and Eminem, Long Beach-born rapper Nate Dogg (nee Nathaniel Dwayne Hale) is dead at 41. Dogg died on Tuesday, March 15, in Long Beach, California. While the official reason for his death has yet to be made public, he suffered a stroke and heart attack in 2007.

Insofar as his legacy goes, MTV reports: "Thanks to Nate’s prolific collaborations with other artists, as well as a number of his own solo albums, any acts developing a similar reputation for melodically sung and catchy hip-hop hooks automatically drew comparisons to his golden voiced standard. That means artists like Akon, Drake and T-Pain, amongst many others, all owe Nate Dogg a debt of gratitude."

Richard Alden Samuel McCroskey III of Castro Valley, the aspiring GANGSTA URBAN HIP-HOP RAP artist known as "Syko Sam" who allegedly killed four people in a small Virginia town (including his wildly naive girlfriend), bludgeoned his victims to death. Why? Because ""Jesus told [Syko Sam] to do it."

The bodies -- who were found over the weekend in a small town 50 miles west of Richmond, Virginia -- have been identified as Mark Niederbrock, a Presbyterian pastor, "Longwood University professor Debra Kelley, 53; Emma Niederbrock, 16, the daughter of Kelley and Mark Niederbrock; and Melanie Wells, 18, of Inwood, W.Va."

According to CBS 5/AP, Syko Sam was a "meek and kind person," one who crooned about "killing, maiming and mutilating" his fellow human beings. He presumably met Emma Niederbrock via MySpace, who had professed her love to him on the social networking site days before being beaten to death.
