Are you sitting down for this news? Sorry, that question is redundant, because the news is that you're probably sitting in your office right now where you'll spend more time working than employees in any other US city.

According to a report released by the NYC comptroller ranking work hours across the country, full-time working San Franciscans toil for an average of 44 hours and one minute per week. Factoring in commute times, which run an average of 4 hours and 57 minutes every week, our work travails take 48.58 hours per week.

But yes, with the commute factored in, New Yorkers — who work 42 hours and 50 minutes a week in the office on average — end up spending more time in "work-related activity" (as the report deems the aggregate of commute time and office time). With its average weekly 6 hours and 18 minutes of commuting, New York ends up ranking as the report's "hardest working city."

But let's call BS, shall we? Though our total work/commute time loses out to NYC's, I think we can comfortably say that putting in the most time at the office and a little less wasted time on the way there and back makes us the most efficient city. And plus, our offices — at least some of them — have ping pong tables, artisanal lunches, and nap rooms you won't find on Wall Street. Wait, could that be why we spend so much time in the office in the first place?

A new study [pdf warning] released by the East Coast suits at Citigroup says San Francisco is only the fifth most competitive city in the United States and the 18th most competitive worldwide. Since we here on the West Coast are either too stoned or too busy inventing new things to put avocados on to be worried about trampling over one another, we are perfectly OK with this ranking.

Apparently Baghdad by the Bay ranked high on "Institutional Character" — a metric meant to quantify a city’s legislative ability. Unsurprisingly, the notoriously chill Tech sector brought us down a couple notches because it is financially (and emotionally) immature. On the other hand, we won points for an effective government and the city's HealthySF initiative — which readers will remember was very famously marred by a giant loophole.

Down in Los Angeles, where everyone and their sister is trying to break into Hollywood, the city of Angels beat out San Francisco to become the second most competitive city in the US and we're sure they're pretty proud of that.

On the other hand, San Francisco also got bonuses (or should it be deductions?) because of our reputation as one of the most liberal and accepting cities. So we don't really care when New York (where Citigroup is located, mind) goes on about how they're always the #1 most competitive city on the planet.

Gary Danko Tops, Says Urgently Recalled Zagat Guide 2013

The Google-owned Zagat Guide 2013 landed in bookstores this week, which were then quickly pulled (more on that in a bit). For the umpteenth year in a row, Gary Danko's eponymous restaurant took top honors in the annual (and irrelevant?) dining guide.

"Once again, Gary Danko was king, topping the lists in Food, Service and Popularity. Sierra Mar was tops in Decor and Cheesecake Factory was the most popular chain," reports Inside Scoop. "Bi-Rite won the top bargain, followed by Dynamo Donut, Blue Bottle, Top Dog and Caspers Hot Dogs. In-N-Out was 6th."

The top ten Food rankings for the Bay Area are:

Gary Danko (29)
French Laundry (29)
Kiss Seafood (28)
Seven Hills (28)
Acquerello (28)
Erna’s Elderberry (28)
Marinus (28)
Kokkari (28)
Sierra Mar (28)
Evvia (28)

But here's what's fascinating/odd. Using a bit of old-school reporting, Inside Scoop's Paolo Lucchesi	spotted the new Zagat guide in a bookstore while on his way to work, picked up a copy, and then wrote about it. Turns out, at least according to Google, the guides were not supposed to be available for purchase. It also turns out that the 2013 guides, now in bookstores, are being urgently recalled. Why? Because of a typo on the spine: "San Franscico." (We feel for you, Zagat, as it happens to us all of the time!)

Lucchesi explains:

The 2013 Bay Area guides just happened to be on sale — and prominently displayed in the window — at my local bookstore. The nice person at the counter said the guides just came in yesterday. (How convenient.) Following confirmation with Zagat, I figured that the Google-owned incarnation was maybe doing things differently now. After all, the cover is tweaked and there are shiny new Google Local ads on the bottom of every page.

In conclusion, Zagat is currently working to get these versions off shelves ASAP. So you curious restaurant folks should get them while you can; these collector’s items won’t last long.

Look for the 2013 guides in bookstores... soon. Hopefully.

San Francisco Is America's Best City, Says Business Magazine

"It's impossible to say what's 'best' for everyone, of course," reads BusinessWeek's introduction to <a href="http://images.businessweek.com/slideshows/2012-09-26/americas-50-best-cities#slid...

SF News

best city

listicles

rankings

Andrew Dalton

"It's impossible to say what's 'best' for everyone, of course," reads BusinessWeek's introduction to America's 50 Best Cities, hinting that not even the magazine itself can take another 50-photo slideshow seriously anymore. This list in particular is important however, because for local readers of Bloomberg's BusinessWeek it will be a nice way to validate the wildly overpriced real estate they just bought.

Harnessing all of BusinessWeek's extensive knowledge of ranking things, the magazine evaluated America's 100 largest cities based on the usual, generic criteria like "leisure attributes," "educational attributes," crime, and air quality. After crunching the numbers from a private real estate data firm, the magazine concluded that San Francisco is America's best city. What makes us so great? Well, not the chilly August we just had or the real estate market, obviously. We did get high marks on education, though. San Francisco also scored points for its "lively arts scene" and "plethora of food trucks," among the many other splendid leisure options.

In fact, the leisure category — things like number of restaurants, bars, museums, parks and sports teams — had the greatest weight in the survey. (Because having stuff to do all the time is pretty much the only reason why you'd pay this much rent.) Anyhow, if you're still questioning the methodology here, just remember they accurately placed Los Angeles as the 50th Best City in the country, which is basically the worst city.

Honorable Mentions: Oakland at 31 (chortle), Seattle at number 2, and New York trailing in 7th.

Orlando, Florida comes in a No. 1. However, San Francisco ranks a distant 23rd and Oakland 79th when it comes to porn. The criteria went something like this: compiling the number of DVDs purchased, rented, or streamed (AdultDVDEmpire.com); adult entertainment stores per city (StorErotica.net); rate of porn searches (Google Insights); and the percentage of Cinemax-subscribing households (SimplyMap). You will have to take the results with a massive salt lick, though. (What self-respecting gay uses AdultDVDEmpire.com or Cinemax for ejaculatory assistance?) The top 100 is as follows:

As you might have guessed by now, Mayor Lee didn't bring any major surprises with him to Question Time yesterday. Batting around questions like "How will you stimulate the economy?" (from Farrell) and "How are we using youth and family services to prevent gang violence?" (from Kim) gave the mayor a couple opportunities to talk about the <strike>Twitter tax break</strike> central Market payroll tax exemption. That's not actually an answer to anyone's question, that's just a PR move.

In related PR moves, Mayor Mustache just kind of blinked when Carmen Chu asked how he would ensure the new Muni chief isn't a royal fuckup like Nat Ford was (paraphrasing there). With lots of noncommittal language, he called out the specific priorities he'd like to see the new director focus on: implementing the new labor agreement, increasing on-time performance and ensuring transit safety. Sure, we'd like to see a bus arrive on time too, but we're not going to get anywhere if we're giving out orders for the new Muni chief the same way one asks to see a dessert menu.

We did learn one fun thing about the Mayor during question time: every time he hears about violence in the Tenderloin and SoMa, he can't sleep at night. Which begs the question: what kind of black magic does this guy use to stay on his feet all day? If there are no soda machines in City Hall, where does he get his Red Bull? When is Bevan Dufty going to install a webcam in room 200 so we can make sure Lee isn't napping on the job? -1 to Ed Lee for not just putting all this in a press release and calling it at day. We could have had this board meeting done in under an hour and a half!

Thank heaven for Malia Cohen though. Probably feeling a little tough after protesting U.S. Airways' treatment of Deshon Marman earlier in the day (and having the local chapter president of the NAACP in attendance didn't hurt either), Cohen pointed out that her question about the 3rd Street Corridor and SF Redevelopment agency was actually three questions and she couldn't care less how you feel about that. Another +1 to Malia Cohen for bringing some sass back to City Hall.

In major agenda items yesterday: Elsbernd's charter amendment on retirement benefits and pension reform was amended and then continued until next week. (Snooze.) Likewise with Scott Wiener's charter amendment that would allow the Board to avoid putting everything on ballot measures - it was amended and tabled until next week. (Double snooze.)

Pretty much the whole middle of the agenda was also passed on one vote. For our purposes that means the city's golf courses will be getting more expensive for out of towners. And apparently someone at SFGovTV was having a laugh with the captioning system:

+1 to whoever's working the control room at SFGovTV because, duh: sharks are rad.

In nominations and whatnot: Supervisors Ross Mirkarimi and John Avalos were nominated to the Association of Bay Area Governments Executive Board. Our most sincere congratulations to the boys for those appointments. We hope those gigs don't hurt any runs for higher office those two might be involved in, but if they need to bail they can rest assured that Eric "B Team Captain" Mar is ready to go as their alternate. +1 for team player Mar, even if the uniform always looks a little big on him.

Speaking of John Avalos, we apparently forgot to give him a point after we slipped him what we thought was a rather nice compliment the other day. Rather than reveal the vast conspiracy that is the Board of Supervisors Weekly Power Rankings, we'll gladly give Mr. Avalos the +1 he deserves for breaking up the demographics of the Family Flight hearing.

During introductions, the St. Ignatius twins: Mark Farrell and Sean Elsbernd introduced legislation to prevent a lawsuit being brought against the city over public financing for campaign funds. +halfsies for Farrell and Elsbernd - way to keep your eye on the ball.

Finally, we end with Malia Cohen, who came in to the meeting fired up (see above) and introduced a resolution calling for an apology for Deshon Marmon from US Airways and a FAA probe in to the Saggy Pants Predicament. Under normal circumstances, we'd rail against these sort of limp, non-binding resolutions, but in this case we'll give her credit for the San Mateo County DA finally backing down and deciding not to press charges in this case. An angry woman is way more threatening than a non-binding resolution anyway. Another +1 to Malia Cohen.

At the end of the day, the Bayview Supe continues to claw her way to the top (and we love it), gaining on the SI Twins who have held the top spot for a couple weeks now. Eric Mar is no longer under water and we promise we're not being hard on Avalos: we just need a couple more poetry readings to get us in the mood. Speaking of which, there was a disappointing lack of camera time from Jane Kim this week. But here it is, your moment of Kim:

Take, for example, today's revealing top 8 San Francisco bars with the "crappiest crowds." Rankings 8, 7, 6, and 5 are Beauty Bar, Medjool, Swig, and R Bar, respectively.

In all fairness, you need to visit good ol' Gridie to find out just who made the top four. (Also, regarding the number-one spot, we've never visited the sorta chic spot but have heard mixed reviews. Is it really that bad, clientele-wise? Jesus. We remove ourselves from the nightlife scene for a scant four months, and our scenester knowledge is shot to hell. Sad.)

We can't think of any local establishments' crowds that deserve our scorn. On the contrary, the scenes at such venues as Michael Gouddou's Gallery Lounge and Da Da, the newly relocated Metro in the Castro, and the bar at the St. Regis have won us over tenfold. (Really, all excellent choices for drinking and chatting as far as we're concerned.) Oddly enough, we here at SFist cannot think of one particular bar crowd to bitch about. Frightening.

This is where you, dear readers, come in: any thoughts? Just where will you never step foot in again because of the scene?

Wossamotta U? Especially those ranking institutions of higher learning. The yearly U.S. News & World Report list is out -- any wagers on how local schools did? And, really, how much would it affect your choices? We remember mulling the 1991 list saying "can't get in there, can't get in there, nope, not there either . . ." But it's still fun to see how stuff measures up, we suppose.

Unshockingly, Stanford University was high on the list, reaching No. 4 this year, undoubtedly driving the next generation of Azia Kims. Cal came in at No. 21 and was, in fact, the top public university. Yay Cal! U.C. Davis was No. 42 and U.C. Santa Cruz was ranked No. 79.

Top 3? Princeton, Harvard, Yale. Do we detect an East Coast prejudice? Oh, what the hell do we know; we attended No. 54 (one of them; there's a 3-way tie) when it was ranked much lower. Probably couldn't get in anymore. Or afford it. The costs are staggering these days, more so even than a few years ago -- the report has those measures as well, along with interesting stuff like economic diversity rankings and campus ethnic diversity.
Fact is, among the 34 American cities with more than half a million people, San Francisco is the ninth safest according to Morgan Quitno Corp's annual "City Crime Rankings" to be published in December. The rankings are based on the rates of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft. If you're still nervous (some of the stuff in the Blotter is pretty scary), you can move down 101 to San Jose, which came in first.

Our poor friends at DCist came in at the other end of the scale - 2nd most dangerous. Good excuse to stay home and blog. Detroit was named most dangerous, although we hear Auburn Hills is really the area to avoid.
