San Francisco 23rd 'Smuttiest City,' Says Men's Health

Men's Health has a breakdown of the top 100 "smuttiest" (i.e., porn-happy) cities in the United States. Orlando, Florida comes in a No. 1. However, San Francisco ranks a distant 23rd and Oakland 79th when it comes to porn. The criteria went something like this: compiling the number of DVDs purchased, rented, or streamed (AdultDVDEmpire.com); adult entertainment stores per city (StorErotica.net); rate of porn searches (Google Insights); and the percentage of Cinemax-subscribing households (SimplyMap). You will have to take the results with a massive salt lick, though. (What self-respecting gay uses AdultDVDEmpire.com or Cinemax for ejaculatory assistance?) The top 100 is as follows: more ›

Board of Supervisors Weekly Power Rankings for Wednesday, July 13th, 2011

As you might have guessed by now, Mayor Lee didn't bring any major surprises with him to Question Time yesterday. Batting around questions like "How will you stimulate the economy?" (from Farrell) and "How are we using youth and family services to prevent gang violence?" That's not actually an answer to anyone's question, that's just a PR move. more ›

(Also, regarding the number-one spot, we've never visited the sorta chic spot but have heard mixed reviews. Is it... more ›

Wossamotta U? The Latest U.S. News College List

Hey, everyone loves a list, right? Especially those ranking institutions of higher learning. The yearly U.S. News & World Report list is out -- any wagers on how local schools did? And, really, how much would it affect your choices? We remember mulling the 1991 list saying "can't get in there, can't get in there, nope, not there either . . ." But it's still fun to see how stuff measures up, we suppose. Unshockingly, Stanford University was high on the list, reaching No. 4 this year, undoubtedly driving the next generation of Azia Kims. more ›

Quit Whining About Crime

For those of you who take one look at a Craigslist posting for a room in the Bayview and think to yourself, "It's too dangerous," it may be time to reevaluate. Fact is, among the 34 American cities with more than half a million people, San Francisco is the ninth safest according to Morgan Quitno Corp's annual "City Crime Rankings" to be published in December. The rankings are based on the rates of murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and auto theft. If you're still nervous (some of the stuff in the Blotter is pretty scary), you can move down 101 to San Jose, which came in first. more ›
