Pirate Cat Radio Fined $10,000, Off Air For Now

We noted it in the Day Around the Bay last week (via SF Appeal), but some of you radio fans may have noticed that Pirate Cat Radio (89.7 FM) has completely disappeared off the airwaves and are now operating web-only. SF Weekly picks up the story this week, and reports on the $10,000 fine that's been slapped on the unlicensed station, despite their having operated openly, under the FCC's nose, for years -- using a loophole in the commission's rules regarding unlicensed stations "during wartime," which technically, one could argue, we're in now. 28-year-old station head Daniel K. Roberts is hoping for some donations to help cover this fine, and to help the station keep operating in its current web-only incarnation.

KREV 92.7 FM Gets Homophobic In the Mornings

Radio station 92.7, once a gay-friendly station brimming with synthetic beats, was bought by new owners in September. Said new owners fired most of the staff and talent, replacing them with, for lack of a better word, dreck.

Energy 92.7, Dead

Yesterday, rumors were swirling like a tweaker with glo-sticks that Energy 92.7, the city's preferred dance station with a gay bent, will come to an end. Turns out said rumors are, sadly, true. While calls to 92.7 have gone unanswered, word is that the station's new owner is a homophoobic meanie who stomps on puppies and rainbows. Or something like that.

Michael Savage Off the Air in San Francisco

Talk 910 KNEW, according to Patriot Axiom, has tossed controversial performance artist Michael Savage off the air in San Francisco. (What?!) "With little notice, Talk 910 KNEW has replaced controversial talk show host Michael Savage in the 3-7 time slot," they report. According to the 910 AM's blog, "Here's your no-spin direct answer; we have decided to go in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information. The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision." (Snap!) The somewhat boring "John and Ken" will replace Allen Ginsberg's former BFF. (Say what you will about Savage, "uninteresting" is not one of them.) If you recall, Savage had to leave 560 KSFO after, well, being Michael Savage.

On the Radio: San Francisco’s Central Subway, Yay or Nay?

Tonight, City Visions Radio on KALW will chat about the Central Subway, its pros and cons. Naturally, the Central Subway is a super nifty project. (Because progress is building stuff, and building stuff is the FUTURE! No matter what!) Tonight's show will focus on San Francisco's plan to build a subway linking Chinatown with the new Third Street light rail. The $1.5 billion project would also link the Caltrain terminal at 4th and King with Chinatown.

Women Brag to KMEL About Violent Beating

While we typically roll our eyes at comments and opinions that call for the death of people who do stupid things, this is one case we might consider. You see, two ladies who took turns beating Oakland resident Melissa Seals last month called KMEL to brag about it. After taking turns brutally beating Seals at her Oakland salon and videotaping the entire thing, because Seals' ex-boyfriend allegedly asked them to do so, the two mental giants went on-air and had the following conversation. Ahem:

Be sure to check out voice of reason Matt Baume on KALW" tonight at 97.1 on your dial, or live right here. He goes on 7:30 p.m.-ish. SFist's Editor at Large and creator of Stop8.org, a post-Prop 8 portal, he'll be discussing stuff about same-sex marriage and the recently passed California proposition banning it. At the very least, tune in just to hear his eloquent, dare we say sultry, voice.

Recently transferred to federal prison in Oklahoma, former KGO radio host and child porn connoisseur Bernie Ward has been transported to a federal prison in eastern Texas to serve out the remainder of his seven-year sabbatical. Although it wasn't Ward's first choice -- his ideal jail was a minimum security prison in Lompoc -- FCI Beaumont holds low security male inmates and is a mere 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Ward's release date, according to Dan Noyes, is December 21, 2014. See you then, Bernie! (KGO)

Earlier in July, SFist reported that Alice 97.3's Morning Radio Show booted No Name (AKA Mike Nelson) from the (allegedly) popular morning program. Reason given for ridding Nelson from the zany morning team was that the show was going to move in a "different direction." And by "different" they meant "backwards," it seems. See, Vinnie (who used to be Sarah's partner before getting fired in 2002 for partying too hard with his pal Tina, thus forcing him into rehab) will return again. Wee. According to SF Weekly, "tomorrow listeners will hear a very familiar voice joining Sarah. That’s right, Vinnie’s back!" Read more about it here.

Revealed by its competitor Live105 this morning, word is that Alice 97.3's Morning Radio Show just pruned part of its morning team, on-air personality No Name (AKA Mike Nelson). Alas. Together for six years on the radio, and a few weeks on television with an ill-advised spin-off of the show, Sarah and No Name have entertained the Bay Area masses every morning with, ahem, shocking banter and bon mots. (Or so we assume. We haven't listened to the radio since the advent of the talking picture box. But we have seen their mugs grace the sides of Muni buses now and then.)

SF Weekly's Andy Wright has word that Gavin Newsom's radio show, cleverly titled "The Gavin Newsom Show," will break its hymen this coming Saturday at high noon. Eeeee! And it all goes down on, sigh, Green 960AM. (Really? 960AM? How very goddamn annoying. Fucking Christ. This whole "green" nonsense must die a violent, brutal, very public and humiliating death.) He joins the eco-friendly station, which already features such on-air talent as Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, and Angie Coiro.

Just a quick FYI: vice presidential eye candy Matt Gonzalez will be taking calls live today on with Angie Coiro. You can find them chatting away over at 960 AM, from 3 p.m.- 4 p.m., so give them a call with your most pressing questions. But be careful: with so much liberal thought packed into just one hour, your hemorrhaging heart may very well jump out of your chest and beat your penis to death. You've been warned.

Lev Yilmaz, SFist's resident cartoonist will be doing an interview on Wednesday, March 5th at 4 p.m. PST.

Politically-correct, conservative KSFO talk show host Melanie Morgan annonced yesterday that her contract would not be renewed due to financial issues over at KSFO's corporate parent, Citadel Broadcasting Corp. Co-host of the Lee Rodgers & Melanie Morgan Show, Morgan is somewhat (in)famous for jump starting the Gov. Gray Davis recall, which has since left us with Gov. Schwarzenegger; and calling for the rape, murder, hair-pulling, and vivisection of editor Bill Keller. (Okay, not really, what she actually said was that if Bill Keller should be tried for treason, he should face the ultimate penalty, which is death. So..there you go.)

If you're like us you spend every Friday afternoon glued to DJ Ted Leibowitz and the Bagel Radio Friday Live Show. If you aren't like us, you should be - it's the best rock radio show around. Ted has been a huge part of the indie rock world here in San Francisco for quite some time, he's a friend of SFist, and his wonderful Web radio show has been a huge boost to any number of local up-and-coming acts (we're thinking right now of Birdmonster and the Heavenly States, but the list could go on for quite some time). Ted is the DJ that we wish was on commercial radio - the guy who not only knows everything about music, but has a deep and abiding love for San Francisco music. Heck, he even got married at the Great American Music Hall.

Former Catholic priest and KGO 810 AM host Bernie Ward was finally fired, ending his working relationship with the station. This stems from last year's federal indictment of child pornography charges that befell the (now former) host of "the Bernie Ward Show" and "Godtalk." He was officially let go, it seems, at the end of 2007. According to Dan Noyes at KGO, Ward admitted to "downloading images from the internet and trading them with people he met on-line. His attorneys have said Ward was doing research for a book at the time." Hmm.

Marin County coroner's office identified that the body found atop Mt. Tam this past Sunday afternoon as female and, yes, Veronica Ruiz. It seems that she "the Internal Revenue Service agent's service weapon was found at her side and her U.S. Treasury Department photo identification was found in her purse at the place of her death," according to a report on CBS 5. (IRS agents have issued arms? Huh.) It appears that she died of "an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."

(Look at us, getting all PETA on you with that headline. Gross.)

-- Belle de jour (1967): Watch Catherine Deneuve turn into a whore while you, in turn, help to support some. A discussion will follow Luis Buñuel's housewife-cum-prostitute classic, and participants will receive gifts of sex toys. (Tee hee.) All of tonight's proceeds will go to support St. James Infirmary, a health and occupational injury clinic for sex workers. Screens tonight at 6:30 p.m. at Artists' Television Access; donation of $5-20.

Aaron Axelsen has been a major force in promoting local independent music with San Francisco's indie-dance party, Popscene and his Sunday night radio show on Live 105. (You can listen from 7-10pm. Check out what he plays, here.) We wanted to feature his top ten albums of the year to find out what he thinks rocked 2007. Here's the list:

-- At Long Last Love (1975): At last -- the fecal matter-fest that is Peter Bogdanovich's career-killing, Cole Porter-infused musical. Starring Cybill Shepherd, Burt Reynolds, and Madeline Kahn, how did it all go wrong? Find out for yourself tonight at 7:45 p.m. at the Castro Theatre; $6-9. (Psst: Best Little Whorehouse In Texas screens at 9:45 p..m.; Smokey & the Bandit at midnight -- it's a Burt Reynolds extravaganza!)

Say it ain't so, Bernie! Wow. Former Catholic priest and SF radio talk show host has been "indicted on federal child pornography charges," according to the Chronicle. It seems that the popular KGO 810 AM host turned himself in to authorities earlier today. Although the "specifics of the allegations against him are under seal," said the authorities, we're dying to know exactly what happened. Because: whoa. Like, really. In addition to being a reporter...

Although the T-Mobile store on Third and Market streets failed to make the list -- they're (allegedly) rampant fibbers over there, people! -- be sure to read Gridskipper's spot-on and delightful San Francisco Bad Service Board Game. They map out the top six as follows:

The hostage standoff is over. No one died. Nothing went ka-blam. The "deranged man" at Clinton's HQ was simply the town crazy infamous around those parts for his kooky mental instability. (Then, this situation must happen on a daily basis over at Hillary Clinton's SF headquarters.) According to CBS 5: WBZ Radio's Lana Jones learned that the [wacky] man's stepson reported to police that his stepfather had been drinking for two days. The son...

Let's be honest, we were never really Maroon 5 fans. (Ick, right? Right.) We've never turned off their music if it happened to be on the radio but we've never, by choice, listened to it on our iPod. It is not because they are bad or hate their music - we've just never really cared to listen to them (voluntarily). Maroon 5 picked the best band to open for them, The Hives because they...
