John Madden Slams Brian Wilson's ESPY Outfit

John Madden Slams Brian Wilson's ESPY Outfit

SFist was the first to bring you the now-famous spandex suit Giants closer Brian Wilson wore at Wednesday's ESPY Awards, and it was glorious. We don't know about you, but our appreciation for Wilson as a San Francisco delegate jumped tenfold. However, not everybody was happy about it. Broadcaster and KCBS commentator John Madden slammed Wilson this morning for his revealing attire at last night's awards show. more ›

Giants General Manager Slams Scott Cousins

Giants General Manager Slams Scott Cousins

Buster Posey's collision with Marlins rookie Scott Cousins still has fans and teammaktes alike livid. And rightfully so. The crash yanked the noted Rookie of the Year out for the rest of the season. Posey has since refused to return any of Cousins' apologetic phone calls. Which is understandable. He's hurt. We're hurt. Heavens' angels are hurt. Anyone with a heart is hurt. ... more ›

KUSF, the New Ike's Place?

KUSF, the New Ike's Place?

Hot on the heels of Benjamin Wachs and Joe Eskenazi's excellent article on silly ordinances at City Hall, SF Weekly roundaboutly reports that Supevisor Ross Mirkarimi plans on introducing a resolution supporting KUSF, everyone's suddenly favorite radio station that abruptly changed formats earlier this month, as first reported by SFist. Will it makes a difference? Absolutely not. It will get killed before it goes anywhere. (Which is too bad, or so we hear. The over-inked station was quite popular with certain people.) Will it make a handful of people and reporters feel good about themselves? Of course. And isn't that, in the end, what's most important? [SFW] more ›

Help Save KUSF

Help Save KUSF

Both private school students and classic music lovers are fuming ever since yesterday's KUSF announcement of a drastic change in format. An attempt to save KUSF is currently afoot with this handy Facebook page. It declares: "USF underhandedly sold off our beloved 90.3FM KUSF and forced it to go online. Let's try to save as much of this wonderful station as possible! This is the place to find info on the sale and what our next options are." more ›

The KPFA Morning Show Ends

The KPFA Morning Show Ends

Bay Area baby boomers took a hit to the black felt beret this week after The KPFA Morning Show was yanked from the air. Why? Well, for starters, radio is a dying industry. But, if the wheels-within-wheels sect is to be believed, nefarious work could be at play, man. Allegations of interoffice "“political retaliation” have, of course, surfaced as well. more ›

Joanne Weir Comes to KGO Radio

Joanne Weir Comes to KGO Radio

It's no secret SFist is stuck on Joanne Weir, one of our favorite chefs and local personalities. In addition to being unassuming and friendly in person, she taught us how to make a simple Goat Cheese and Green Onion Galette (from Weir Cooking in the Wine Country.) And for that? We are eternally grateful. Which is why we're amped, if you will, after hearing that San Francisco-based chef will temporarily take over "Dining Around with Gene Burns" while the titular host goes on vacation. more ›

TV Stations Find Michael Savage Ad Too Offensive

TV Stations Find Michael Savage Ad Too Offensive

Performance artist and controversial radio host Michael Savage is screeching mad at local SF television stations. It seems, according to Rich Lieberman, some of them are refusing to air a spot he shot for his XTRA Sports 860 AM local radio affiliate, all because of his use of the term "schmuck." For the goyim out there who don't know what a "schmuck" is, it's a pejorative Yiddish term for the penis, which has trickled down in meaning to fool. Watch the tepid in in question here. more ›

Ask SFist: Alice Radio's 'Sarah & Vinnie' Suspended?

Air America Media, Green 960 Affiliate, To Close

Rich Lieberman has word that Air America Media, affiliate to the eco-tinged Green 960, will shutdown operations immediately. "Air America Media CEO Charlie Kireker tells staff the liberal radio network will cease live programming immediate and file Chapter 7 liquidation 'soon,'" reports Lieberman, who goes on to point out, "Kireker says the 'very difficult' economy has had a 'significant impact' on operations at the six-year old network.'" more ›

Karel Comes Back To SF Radio On Monday

Karel Comes Back To SF Radio On Monday

Good news, radio listeners. Karel, the single-named, visibly homosexual radio talk show host, plans on coming back to the San Francisco airwaves next Monday. Rich Lieberman has the scoop, reporting that the "late of KGO and Energy (92.7) is coming back to the SF airwaves, beginning Monday." To start things off, he'll "do the afternoon drive show on Green 960, the Clear Channel outlet that has a loyal, if not humongous following." more ›

SFist Hears: Live 105's Not So Silent Night @ Oracle Arena

by Moses Namkung Intrigued by the opportunities to photograph Metric frontwoman Emily Haines and to finally see Vampire Weekend live, we headed out to Oracle Arena to experience Live 105's Not So Silent Night last Friday. The evening, sold out for days, featured a five-band bill weighted towards neo/prog-rock with 30 Seconds to Mars, Muse, and (ugh) AFI also on the program. more ›

KJFC 50th Anniversary Party

KJFC 50th Anniversary Party

by Rachel Brodsky In a world where radio play matters less and less to an artists' career, the Bay Area is still a stronghold for high-quality college radio. You'll barely hear any pops and clicks of an unseasoned DJ's tongue in our collection of stations, but you will hear a consistently generous portion of good tunes, circling every genre from jangle pop to French cold wave. In fact, California's beloved non-commercial radio station KFJC is proudly celebrating its 50th anniversary tonight at Cafe De Nord. more ›

Pirate Cat Radio Fined $10,000, Off Air For Now

We noted it in the Day Around the Bay last week (via SF Appeal), but some of you radio fans may have noticed that Pirate Cat Radio (89.7 FM) has completely disappeared off the airwaves and are now operating web-only. SF Weekly picks up the story this week, and reports on the $10,000 fine that's been slapped on the unlicensed station, despite their having operated openly, under the FCC's nose, for years -- using a loophole in the commission's rules regarding unlicensed stations "during wartime," which technically, one could argue, we're in now. 28-year-old station head Daniel K. Roberts is hoping for some donations to help cover this fine, and to help the station keep operating in its current web-only incarnation. more ›

KREV 92.7 FM Gets Homophobic In the Mornings

Energy 92.7, Dead

Energy 92.7, Dead

Yesterday, rumors were swirling like a tweaker with glo-sticks that Energy 92.7, the city's preferred dance station with a gay bent, will come to an end. Turns out said rumors are, sadly, true. While calls to 92.7 have gone unanswered, word is that the station's new owner is a homophoobic meanie who stomps on puppies and rainbows. Or something like that. more ›

Michael Savage Off the Air in San Francisco

Michael Savage Off the Air in San Francisco

Talk 910 KNEW, according to Patriot Axiom, has tossed controversial performance artist Michael Savage off the air in San Francisco. (What?!) "With little notice, Talk 910 KNEW has replaced controversial talk show host Michael Savage in the 3-7 time slot," they report. According to the 910 AM's blog, "Here's your no-spin direct answer; we have decided to go in a different philosophical and ideological direction, featuring more contemporary content and more local information. The Savage Nation does not fit into that vision." (Snap!) The somewhat boring "John and Ken" will replace Allen Ginsberg's former BFF. (Say what you will about Savage, "uninteresting" is not one of them.) If you recall, Savage had to leave 560 KSFO after, well, being Michael Savage. more ›

On the Radio: San Francisco’s Central Subway, Yay or Nay?

On the Radio: San Francisco’s Central Subway, Yay or Nay?

Tonight, City Visions Radio on KALW will chat about the Central Subway, its pros and cons. Naturally, the Central Subway is a super nifty project. (Because progress is building stuff, and building stuff is the FUTURE! No matter what!) Tonight's show will focus on San Francisco's plan to build a subway linking Chinatown with the new Third Street light rail. The $1.5 billion project would also link the Caltrain terminal at 4th and King with Chinatown. more ›

Women Brag to KMEL About Violent Beating

Women Brag to KMEL About Violent Beating

While we typically roll our eyes at comments and opinions that call for the death of people who do stupid things, this is one case we might consider. You see, two ladies who took turns beating Oakland resident Melissa Seals last month called KMEL to brag about it. After taking turns brutally beating Seals at her Oakland salon and videotaping the entire thing, because Seals' ex-boyfriend allegedly asked them to do so, the two mental giants went on-air and had the following conversation. Ahem: more ›

Be sure to check out voice of reason Matt Baume on KALW" tonight at 97.1 on your dial, or live right here. He goes on 7:30 p.m.-ish. SFist's Editor at Large and creator of Stop8.org, a post-Prop 8 portal, he'll be discussing stuff about same-sex marriage and the recently passed California proposition banning it. At the very least, tune in just to hear his eloquent, dare we say sultry, voice. more ›

Where In the World is Bernie Ward?

Where In the World is Bernie Ward?

Recently transferred to federal prison in Oklahoma, former KGO radio host and child porn connoisseur Bernie Ward has been transported to a federal prison in eastern Texas to serve out the remainder of his seven-year sabbatical. Although it wasn't Ward's first choice -- his ideal jail was a minimum security prison in Lompoc -- FCI Beaumont holds low security male inmates and is a mere 35 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. Ward's release date, according to Dan Noyes, is December 21, 2014. See you then, Bernie! (KGO) more ›

Alice Morning Radio Show's Sarah & Vinnie Together Again

Earlier in July, SFist reported that Alice 97.3's Morning Radio Show booted No Name (AKA Mike Nelson) from the (allegedly) popular morning program. Reason given for ridding Nelson from the zany morning team was that the show was going to move in a "different direction." And by "different" they meant "backwards," it seems. See, Vinnie (who used to be Sarah's partner before getting fired in 2002 for partying too hard with his pal Tina, thus forcing him into rehab) will return again. Wee. According to SF Weekly, "tomorrow listeners will hear a very familiar voice joining Sarah. That’s right, Vinnie’s back!" Read more about it here. more ›

Alice Radio's "No Name" Booted Off Morning Show

Alice Radio's "No Name" Booted Off Morning Show

Revealed by its competitor Live105 this morning, word is that Alice 97.3's Morning Radio Show just pruned part of its morning team, on-air personality No Name (AKA Mike Nelson). Alas. Together for six years on the radio, and a few weeks on television with an ill-advised spin-off of the show, Sarah and No Name have entertained the Bay Area masses every morning with, ahem, shocking banter and bon mots. (Or so we assume. We haven't listened to the radio since the advent of the talking picture box. But we have seen their mugs grace the sides of Muni buses now and then.) more ›

Newsom to Become Radio Star

Newsom to Become Radio Star

SF Weekly's Andy Wright has word that Gavin Newsom's radio show, cleverly titled "The Gavin Newsom Show," will break its hymen this coming Saturday at high noon. Eeeee! And it all goes down on, sigh, Green 960AM. (Really? 960AM? How very goddamn annoying. Fucking Christ. This whole "green" nonsense must die a violent, brutal, very public and humiliating death.) He joins the eco-friendly station, which already features such on-air talent as Stephanie Miller, Thom Hartmann, Ed Schultz, and Angie Coiro. more ›
