Uh oh! Did you stop by the Jamba Juice on Lincoln Avenue in Willow Glen in San Jose any time during the first two weeks of August? An employee may have given you hepatitis A. Turns out one of the food handlers didn't realize she was sick and she might have given it to you if she didn't wash her hands properly. If you were at the JJ from August 9-16, get a shot. If you were there from August 1-8, watch for symptoms (diarrhea, fatigue, jaundice), because the shot won't work for you anymore. Jamba Juice says that the store has been thoroughly cleaned, no one has come down with symptoms, the chances of getting the disease are small, and if you do come down with hep A, they'll reimburse you. Hep A is fairly rare in San Jose -- there were only 25 cases last year and for this year, only 6. more ›

Your Commute: Cars

Your Commute: Cars

There was a huge accident on eastbound I-80 today, near Pinole -- a five-car pileup. It originally started when a Civic spun out in the fast lane and was hit by a Camry. As the tow trucks came on the scene and were trying to get things under control when a Dodge truck rammed into one of the tow trucks and went airborne, falling back onto the highway where it was struck by a van. The Dodge driver is dead, traffic was backed up for 10 miles, and then in the chaos, the Civic drove off, which now makes its driver liable for fleeing the scene of an accident. more ›

Robbers Go Nutty

It's looking like a dreaded nut ring that has been terrorizing the Central Valley has been broken up as police arrested the two ringleaders on Sunday. The thieves, named Alvin and Simon, were caught with about $400,000 dollars worth of nuts on them. They were caught on Sunday when an alert factory worker noticed that several people were taking nuts out of boxes marked with the names of Central Valley nut companies and putting them into unmarked boxes. After about eleven people were taken into questioning, only two of them were charged. more ›

There's a totally fascinating article about this year's traffic deaths in San Francisco today, by the inimitable Rachel Gordon. At about the 2/3rd mark for the year, we've had 29 traffic collision deaths, which is already three more than the entire year's total in 2005. 2006's total includes 1 bicyclist and 15 pedestrians (including one guy washing his car outside his house, when a drunk driver hit him). more ›
