Per the Daily Cal, Rodríguez’s students have made over 300,000 updates and 3,000 citations to Wikipedia to date — totaling more than 96 million views, while spotlighting in particular the lives of queer and trans Black, Indigenous, and other people of color.

“I want my students to think of themselves as not just consumers of knowledge but as being able to produce knowledge as well,” Rodríguez told the Daily Cal.

Per the Daily Cal, some of the people Rodríguez’s students have highlighted include Indigenous drag queens, transgender activists Adela Vázquez and Karla Avelar and Oakland gay landmark, the White Horse Bar.

As the site Them reports, students have also documented LGBTQ history in Chinatown and international sex worker movements.

“It becomes particularly important to document these subcultures within these communities,” Rodríguez told Them. “Because it’s not just queer Latinas — it’s queer goth Latinas, it’s queer comics of color, it’s African American slaying, right?”

“It’s very specific topics that might really vary by region, by historical moment, and of course at different places around the world,” Rodríguez continued, per Them. Those topics, in Wikipedia and in real life, remain really under-studied and really under-researched.”

Per Them, preserving BIPOC and LGBTQ+ history is now more important than ever as the federal government moves to erase queer and transgender people from its historical programs and websites, including the stripping of Harvey Milk's name from a US Navy ship last June, as reported by SFist.

“Right now, the Trump administration is trying to erase the very existence of transgender people, so having information about those histories, as well as present challenges facing queer and trans communities, is particularly urgent,” Rodríguez continued, per the Daily Cal. “Queer and trans people have always been here, and adding that information to the world’s largest open access encyclopedia is one way to make sure that these stories remain available.”

Image: Landa Lakes, SF-based Indigenous drag queen/Facebook

Field Notes: Amy Tan Watches Birds, a Pop Star Emerges in Marin, and a Lost Gay Film is Found

A long-lost queer film is pulled from the trash; Bay Area native Amy Tan’s meditative bird journals; Tiburon's Miist is spreading kindness through pop music; and Senegalese chef Nafy Flatley is redefining downtown dining with Teranga.

Arts & Entertainment

70s films

Queer

lgbt

amy tan

San Jose

alameda creek

east bay

salmon

tiburon

Marin County

pop music

embarcadero

senegal

devils slide

Leanne Maxwell

Lost gay film resurfaces at Frameline screening

A once-forgotten 1970 queer film, The Meatrack, has returned to the screen after a partial print was rescued from the trash.
San Francisco State just welcomed back the first gay fraternity on campus in almost a quarter of a century. The fraternity, Delta Lambda Phi, is a national organization founded by gay men in 1987, but has not had a chapter at SF State since 1992.

“Essentially our goal is to create a brotherhood like all the other fraternities, but we really feel like creating a home for the large queer male population at SF State,” Kyle Mears, president of Delta Lambda Phi, told the Golden Gate Xpress.

The new chapter became official in December, and its members spoke with the paper about their intentions on the campus of almost 30,000 students.

“We're kind of redefining Greek life in a way,” one member of the fraternity, Austin Farley, explained. “We’re just a group of diverse queer people standing at a table willing to welcome anybody. For those people who can't go out and experience queer life in San Francisco, it’s really important for them to feel welcomed and at home at SF State," he added.

And while Delta Lambda Phi is definitely a gay frat, students don't need to be queer to join — Xpress reports that the only qualifier is that the pledge must identify as male.

The fraternity was founded in 1987 by Vernon L. Strickland III in Washington DC, and the first pledge party drew 150 people.

Over the weekend, a smattering of gays held a protest in front of Foreign Cinema to rally against the loss of LGBT spaces (read: bars, clubs) in San Francisco — specifically in South of Market. According to the group of protesters, someone affiliated with FC was involved with obtaining the Eagle from a group of gay business owners just before the contract was signed. And can you blame them? The venue is ideal and Foreign Cinema knows how to draw a crowd. Can you blame then? Anyway, it got us wondering: what are some of best, albeit dwindling, queer venues left in SoMa?

After all, SoMa used to be a hotbed of bathhouses, leather, and lube. Sure, a few ramaining area bars tip their hats to the days of yore. Kok hasn't lived up to expectations. The bar, formerly Chaps II, seemed just to have a name change, rebrand as it were, but changed nothing else and did little or no promotion outside of Gloss Magazine. They hoped the gays would come en masse, but that has not happened. (Instead of trying to block straight dudes from purchasing retail spaces — where would the gays get their beer! — we could work on making the few spaces we have better?) Same could be said for nearby Raven, a more upscale joint that we actually dig, though it could use a thicker crowd.

And with that, let's go down the list of the top 5 remaining gay venues in SoMa.

5. Blow Buddies
If you fancy anonymous fellatio and don't wear cologne, by golly this is the place for you. We're sticking it on the list since it's one of only two (?) remaining sex clubs in SoMa. And from what we're told, the place is big on large penises but not cool with gays who sport eau de toilette. (The latter infraction could get you banned for the night. Leave the Tom Ford Tuscan Leather at home.)

4. The Stud
Oh daisy, we haven't been to the Stud in eons. But from what our colleagues tell us, it's still just as crowded and crazy, at least on some weekends. Some Thing has taken the place of iconic club night Trannyshack. You can quench your high-concept drag appetite on Fridays.

3. Lone Star
Ah, Lone Star. A smashing watering hole with a private bathroom and a beautifully license plate-adorned patio space. The Harrison Street bar has taken up a lot of the Eagle slack, and their backyard is kind of nice, though not as nice as the Eagle's. They do Sunday beer busts with cheap pitchers, so it's a must for those who pine for the lazy, hazy days of joint-smoking and suds-swilling. (It's also one of those "ripe pit" places that straight-acting and -appearing gays seems to love so much. If free floating B.O. is your thing, the Lone Star on a Sunday is a sure thing.)

2. Beatbox
Beatbox is predominantly gay and new. It's a dance club, so that's nice. It also boats a gorgeous mural outside. That's also nice. A nice drop of gay on a street (11th) next to DNA Lounge, Bar Agricole, and your newly favorite babbling homeless guy.

1. Powerhouse
Affectionately nicknamed the Powerblouse by your editor, the little bar that could on Folsom maintains a hardcore gay vibe with—what else?—screenings of hardcore gay porn on the TV screens. But make no mistake, fellas. This isn't just about sex. Everyone from doctors to coked-out twinks and Walnut Creek lawyers to tipsy otters call this place their home away from home. Top-notch DJs, cheep drinks, and a mellow vibe (depending on the night, that is) pair well with a seedy smoking area in the back, which, really, should be tagged by the San Francisco Historical Preservation Society. It's that noteworthy, folks. SoMa doesn't get anymore SoMa-ier than the Powerhouse.

In a continuing tactic used against anyone who goes against the religious right's attempts to harm and degrade the queer community -- which involves intentionally abusing the term "beliefs" -- they recently used Godwin's Law to slam the SF Board of Supervisors for condemning the Vatican's policy on same-sex adoptions. (Because the Vatican has absolutely no history of questionable sympathy for the Third Reich.) Richard Thompson, president and chief counsel of the Thomas More Law Center for Hate, used the term to describe the Board of Supes.

It is not a stretch to compare the San Francisco board's actions to that of the Nazi Germany policy of Gleichschaltung, vilifying Jews as an auxiliary to and laying the groundwork for more repressive policies, including the final solution of extermination.

Yeah. Nice try. But no.

Our favorite part of the article, however, was the image used to accompany to the story on SFGate. Through it has since been removed, Greg Dewar grabbed it for us so that we could share it with you. This image of Chinese American supes, at right, was a bizarre choice when posting an article blaring a headline about them being called Nazis. Communists? Sure, because that's funny. But Nazis? Well, that's downright strange.
Because this is, for lack of a better word, depressing. It's unreal but all too real. Iraqi gays will be "executed in batches" this week, convicted of the crime of being queer. UK Gay News has the details.

More than 100 prisoners in Iraq are facing execution - and many of them are believed to have been convicted of the 'crime' of being gay, the UK-based Iraqi-LGBT group revealed this afternoon.

According to Ali Hili of Iraqi-LGBT, the Iraqi authorities plan to start executing them in batches of 20 from this week. There is, said Mr. Hili, at least one member of Iraqi-LGBT who are among those to be put to death.
Lesbian rights activist Del Martin -- who married her wife Phyllis Lyon at City Hall this past June on the first day that same-sex couples gained the right -- died this morning at a San Francisco hospital.
Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon, if you recall, were the first queer couple to get married at City Hall. Mayor Gavin Newsom officiated the ceremony. City Attorney Dennis Herrera, in particular, is beaming--at least according to a press released sent out an hour after the ruling was announced.

"I am profoundly grateful, not only for a decision that will end marriage discrimination for gay and lesbian partners in California, but for the Court's eloquence in stating its conclusion," said Herrera. "Our democratic system was founded on the notion that the courts should not be swayed by public opinion when it comes to protecting our most cherished rights. I'm proud that our state's highest court has taken its role seriously. Today's majority has affirmed our Constitution's promise of equality for millions of Californians and their families."

But are there Bay Area folk who--gasp!--oppose today's ruling? SFist is thrilled that the gays might be able to love legally. But even we have a smattering of die-hard liberal friends and associates who secretly loathe gay marriage (and you know who you are.) For the sake of fair-and-balanced coverage, readers, are there any folks out there who cannot stand the thought of attending a tasteful yet lavish wedding ceremony for Adam and Steve? Can you tell us why? Let us know in the comments section.

Your secret will be safe with us.

Anyway, it will be a fun night of getting dolled up, getting smashed, and avoiding/trespassing the Powerhouse's notorious back room. Dress to the nines and strap on your boot flasks, kids. See you at the prom.

Guess what time it is, kids? Smear tactics time! We came across this jarring and chortle-worthy footage, claiming that possible presidential candidate, Barack Obama, is on the down-low. The Harpo DL, if you will. We're being told he could have engaged in bear-ish homosexual activity, is what we're saying.

Do we believe it? Meh. Is it exciting to speculate and think about? But of course.

Have no fear, fans of Obama, or...whoever you're under the misguided notion still has a shot. Tomorrow we'll present to you a piping-hot anti-Hillary video. Trouble is. we're having a difficult time narrowing them down to just one.

Viva democracy!
