Here's what you can do for Valentine's -- head on up to the Legion of Honor...
What with last week's and (and presumably this week's) manic storm activity, John Vlahides at 71Miles reports that this week is week to play hooky. Reporting that the Sierra Crest is "dumping over ten feet of feather-light snow," why not take a day or three off of work to head up to higher altitudes and frolic in the cold?
SFist interviews Kenneth Ryan, Prop Master of the San Francisco Ballet
Reporting from the snow-dappled streets of Chicago, it's your American Football Spectacular preview for this Saturday night's battle at The Stick as The Queen City's feline football franchise comes to town.
We are going to eat SO MUCH food next week, aren't we? That is to say, isn't everyone? This royal-we business makes it hard to communicate sometimes. Does the Queen have this problem? Anyway, yes, everyone will eat lots of food next Thursday, because if they don't that means they hate America. That goes for poor people, too. Doubly so.
This past Wednesday was New-Yorker night in Civic Center: the classical music critic, Alex Ross was promoting his new book at Herbst theater, and we attended the production of the Magic Flute designed by Gerald Scarfe, who regularly illustrates the magazine. Scarfe toned down his usually acidic satirical pen (see the sample from his website that we put after the jump) to cook up sets that are humorous, and respectful of Mozart’s intent.
While the number of ladies on "The Bachelor" was cut down considerably at last week's rose ceremony, there are still way to many women to keep track of. Thankfully we only need to focus on Sheena, Queen of Walnut Creek. There was a bit of excitement in the house when some chick apparently fell down some stairs and Sheena found her and called the paramedics. Needless to say, she didn't go on the group date to the beach, but Sheena did, and she did nothing of note the entire time, while other girls demanded body shots and sped into the ocean topless. But boring must turn the Bachelor on as he ended up giving Sheena a rose.
All of you YouTube addicts out there are probably familiar with many of the "absoludicrous"* found video clips from Nick Prueher and Joe Pickett's touring Found Footage Festival (*Mr. T makes an appearance in the "Celebrities Who Teach" series). The critically-acclaimed event will be in San Francisco tonight and tomorrow night at the Roxie Red Vic at 7:15 p.m. and 9:15 p.m. and this Sunday at the Parkway in Oakland for a 5 p.m. matinee. Every screening features Nick and Joe's live, in-person commentary. If you can't make it to the live show, you have the option to buy the Found Footage Festival Vol. 2 DVD, which features Nick and Joe's commentary and the live audience laugh track from a screening at The Heights Theater in Minnesota. Note: This event has very adult content. There is a clip at the end that will shock, titillate, and stun -- shall we say, "flopping, full frontal?"
-- Magic Bullets: Along with Bonde do Role and JuiceBoxxx, this local outfit (heavy on the bass lines, rhythmic keyboards, and melancholic vocals) performs tonight at 9 p.m. at The Independent, 628 Divisadero; $13.
-- Evil Dead 2 (1987): Sam Raimi's exquisite sequel to the equally-exquisite Evil Dead, minus any tree-rape. Screens at 7:15p.m., 9:15 at The Red Vic, 1727 Haight (at Cole).
...and by trouble, we don't mean the help. [rimshot]
-- Wing: With album titles like Wing Sings Elvis, Wing Sings AC/DC, Dancing Queen by Wing, and Beatles Classics by Wing, it's easy to see why she shot to cult-icon status and became a favorite of Trey Parker and Matt Stone, who ended up using her in South Park. See her tonight along with comedian Lisa Geduling at 8:30 p.m. at Cafe Du Nord, Market and Sanchez Streets; $12.
Last week Filipino CPDRC Inmates’ astounding version of "Thriller" zipped past us, and thank God it did. But looking over their oeuvre, they also have something SF-relevant (well, aside from the fact that what they’re doing is so very gay): a routine to Sister Act's "Hail Holy Queen" -- we are truly blessed.
its a big weekend folks! here's where to jumpstart your Pridealicious weekend:
It's Memorial Day, so it must be time for Carnaval! The two-day multicultural festival on 17th and Harrison, filled with big headdresses, drums, and tasty-smelling food! (note to self: is our car parked near there? Better move it.) This year's theme is LOVE HAPPENS, and, as you can see in the above YouTube clip, this year's Carnaval King and Queen can really shake it!
SFist Rita is out of town for work, so we are donning our tiara and gown for this weeks Swells analysis. Tra-la-la!
Total number of people pictured in this week's Swells society column: 65.
After the jump: the San Jose Metro and the SF Weekly, the Weekly of the Week, and the YTD!

-Thanks for coming, Queen Mary 2. -Santa Clara City Council is expected to vote for a study, just a study, on a new stadium for the Niners.
Speaking of big boats, here's a video of the Queen Mary coming to San Francisco. As a commentor on YouTube pointed out, there's much better videos of the whole thing, but not many of them feature the Sex Pistols.
We'll get to L'Affaire Newsom in a bit.... -Teacher in library stand off says she wanted to do something about bullying-- by keeping kids in a library and using one as a shield
-The Oakland Tribune starts a three-part series on how all this Global Warming stuff is beginning to affect us locally.
If you look out the window and happen to see a big-ass boat in the Bay, that would be the Queen Elizabeth II, the QEII. That is, of course, if you happen to be able to see the Bay from your window. We mainly see the apartment right next to us. The trip over didn't quite set a course for adventure, however, as several days after setting out to sea, an outbreak of the norovirus hit the boat.
Well, we're sorry to report that everyone's day jobs managed to succeed where Wade Crowfoot did not -- namely, in preventing anyone wearing a chicken suit from gaining access to the city's very first Question Time before the Board of Supes! What is democracy coming to?
-Investigators set off to Yale to continue their investigations into Gleegate. -The Kim family ended up on that little used logging road after taking the wrong turn. Report also says search and rescue team didn't do that good of a job.
If the sun is shining a bit brighter and the birds are chirping a bit chirpier it could only be because today is a big day-- as of this posting, our little Nancy is officially now the Queen. In fact, her little "First 100 Hours" plan is now on the clock. How excited is she? She's been throwing herself four days of parties in celebration of it, all to be later shown in an episode of C-Span's "My Sweet Inauguration Party." In a stab at snarkiness, the NY Times even refered to it all as a "Pelosi-Palooza." And the fact some of those parties could raise a little money for her and her party, well, that's just a happy little coincidence.
Phillyist co-editor Star C. Foster, passed away early in the week. Her wit, intelligence, and good nature shone through the site, making Phillyist an immensely fun read. She was loved by many and will be missed by all.
