Rahmanian and his crew had just finished a couple of weekend performances at the Fort Mason Center of the show Song of the North, which is based on an ancient Persian poem.
In a final tip of the hat that sums up this year's (disappointing) election, Gavin Watch has celebrity candidate Chicken John's surprise Saturday night debate with San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom. Not the real mayor, mind you, but Gavin in puppet form. (Kudos to those who created the puppet, though we would've have liked to have seen Newsom sporting a signature cold-blue tie. We digress.)

It's a humorous bit, one that stretches on and on, but worth your time. And beware: the political puppetry metaphors whirling about might hit you smack-ouch in the crotch. The airwaves belong to the public, and it's the government's job to make sure that broadcasters conform to socially accepted ideas about what's good and proper. But what could be more socially accepted in San Francisco than an unpredictable gay parade with a brief smattering of indecency? We ought to be complaining to the FCC that there isn't nudity on TV right now.

But KRON, our favorite scrappy underdog-station, doesn't have much wiggle room when it comes to license renewal. They've already been fined once -- a viewer complained when the station accidentally showed a brief glimpse of a dick during a segment about Puppetry of the Penis. (Why this delicate individual did not change the channel as soon as the subject of the broadcast was announced is unknown.) At some point in 2003, we were at a meeting of the local puppetry guild (because that's the kind of rough crowd with which we roll) and someone mentioned that they'd done some concept art for Pixar involving rodentia. That's four years ago that those poor saps were playing with rats, tweaking every twitch and crumb day after day.

And now, finally, Pixar's finally ready to say "okay, done" to Ratatouille. Upcoming Pixar reports that the wrap party was held last Saturday at the scenic Masonic Auditorium on Nob Hill. Insider reports are coming in from Pixar bloggers and Flickr -- check out the posh setting and the fancy outfits! What a dreamy soirée. Good Christ, even when they're not making movies, Pixar people are awesome.

Stage Fog: Crossing Genres

Some people cross dress, and some artists cross genres.

Arts & Entertainment

Arts+Events

Basil Twist

best of

Bill Faulkner

Christmas

history

Japan

Joe Goode

Lisa Dent

Lisa Dent Gallery

love

Lunatique Fantastique

Magic Theatre

people

puppetry

San Francisco

theater

Theatre

video

West Coast

Karen

at the Magic Theatre
Christmas, in May? Well, yeah. The Magic Theatre rearranged its season a bit. But The Long Christmas Ride Home may be worth the wait. Penned by Paula Vogel as a sort of "love letter to San Francisco," this West Coast premiere is an enticing mix of theater, choreography and Bunraku puppetry (the traditional puppet theater of Japan). What's more, master puppeteer and San Francisco native Basil Twist directs, local luminary Joe Goode choreographs, Jess Curtis dances, and one of our favorite local companies Lunatique Fantastique lends some puppeteers. Just the thought of Paula Vogel and Basil Twist has theater geeks drooling. For the rest of you, trust us. Or, check out some video first. And, if you're really a groupie, Basil Twist has an exhibition at the Lisa Dent Gallery, with an opening reception on May 18.
Playing through June 11

Women on the Way Festival at Dance Mission
Footloose Presents launches its sixth annual festival featuring new work by badass women, from up-and-coming choreographers to hybrid work to solo performance. You've got several best bets here. In Amanda Moody's solo show , Joan of Arc reincarnates as an agoraphobic, chain-smoking housewife who is haunted by visions emanating from her television set. Moody rocked critics in 2000 with her Serial Murderess, so we're looking forward to her latest stage treat. In 6 Hours by Fresh Meat Productions, choreographer and performer Sean Dorsey (with Mair Culbreth) tells the tale of coming out and living as a transgender through dance, theater, storytelling and original music. We're also going to check out Eat Cake in the Bathroom by Eat Cake Productions, a company that's a mix of oddball (in the best sense) artists whose backgrounds range from aerial dance to physical theater to clowning and puppetry. In this hybrid show, a women is on a quest for a formula to solve creative blocks, and apparently naps in bathtubs, ballerinas with flippers and high-flying sopranos are all viable elements in the equation. You may also want to check out Chinese Clown Cabaret, a quirky piece with clowning and musical acts combining opera, Chinese folk songs and ditties performed by a daughter and mother team, Jane Chen and Tair Chen. This piece is a "Best of the SF Fringe," and you'll either love its blatant cuteness that's also paradoxically smart, or you'll find it too sweet. We found it refreshingly original. Other companies on the Women on the Way bill include Alma Esperanza Cunningham Movement, Talismanic Physical Theatre, danceNaganuma, Funsch Dance Experience and Davalos Dance Company. The program changes for each performance, so check out the schedule.
Playing January 12 to 29.
