Krug Champagne summoned the wrath of many Burners (almost one year later!) after they staged a crass publicity stunt involving "society bloggers" at Burning Man 2011. As many of you know, Burning Man is a non-commercial event where all media must be approved via an understandably strict committee. The fancy champagne house, however, didn't bother to go though the proper channels. Which, rude. Even worse? Krug left behind a mess. The Burning Blog has all the details:

"...Krug, a centuries-old luxury champagne house, and its publicity machine, staged and hosted an elaborate dinner party at the trash fence on Friday night of the 2011 event. Pre-event, Krug’s PR agency pitched members of the media to photograph and report on the staged dinner for publications such as Town & Country and W Magazine. They invited society bloggers to the 'exclusive' champagne dinner with the expectation of getting even more coverage, and pro photogs to shoot it. And it worked. The organizers of this event brought paid photographers to the playa and had them falsely register with Media Mecca saying they were there to cover general art and playa happenings, instead of telling the truth; that they were there to act as representatives of Krug - obviously knowing that if they had told the truth, they would not have been allowed to photograph. They then pulled the dinner off entirely under the radar, had the dinner covered both by their captive media and the general media, and managed to get product placement articles published."

As Laughing Squid reported, the bubbly publicity party was picked up by Notes on a Party and Taryn Cox The Wife. It was also featured in Town & Country and W Magazine, though both publications have since yanked the piece. And the Burner community? Well, they're livid and have taken to Facebook and Twitter to tell the luxe champagne house exactly how they feel. Mon dieu!

No word yet as to why this has incurred such anger a year later.

We understand that it's common for coaches to put their game plans (strategy notes? football-y documents?) in their pants. What is strange is Stan<strike>d</strike>ford using the following shot of Coach Jim Harbaugh, with his plans tucked neatly near his crotchal area, as their marketing tool of choice on 2007 football publicity handouts, wallet-sized calendars, and flyers. Behold:

Looks a bit crude, which we like since it almost makes football interesting to us. Marketing imagery aside, congratulations, Stanford, on the upset over the vulgar institution of learning that is USC!

Thanks, Mark, for sending this our way.

It's Got to Be the Morning After

Here's todays sports news

SF News

basketball

college

Giants

Golden State

Golden State Warriors

Greg Maddux

kids

matt cain

Ming Wang

Nolan Ryan

people

publicity

Reds

Bay Area Sports

thunder

train

Warriors

Jon

There's a gym at the Super Mondo Corporation where we work and today there was some big volunteer thing going on with a bunch of kids learning basketball moves. Attending the big goings on was Thunder, the mascot of the Golden State Warriors. Or at least we think it was really the Thunder (who knows if it was really him behind the mask. There could be hundreds of people out there dressed like him to do publicity stuff, like how Krusty once hired Barney to pretend he was him at Kamp Krusty). Now the funny thing is that we happened to notice that right outside of the gym was a limo and standing in front of the limo was the limo driver, just waiting around for what we guessed was Thunder to finish up. So, yes, for those of you wondering, Thunder gets driven around in a limo.

No word if he got into the limo in or out of his costume. We thought about waiting around in the men's locker room to see if he would come up to change but decided not to when we realized that could look kind of creepy.

Reds 4 Giants 2- Oh, Matt Cain, what did you do to deserve this? He lost again last night after giving up only two runs in six innings. One of them, the one that gave him the L, came as a result of first a horrible call by the third base umpire and then a little flair that went off the glove of second baseman Eugenio Velez. With those two runs, his ERA is now up to 3.68 which still puts him in the top 30 in the league for ERA. He has a better ERA than Greg Maddux, Justin Verlander and Chien-Ming Wang. Wang, btw, has 18 wins. Also, batters are only hitting .235 against him, better than, well, a whole hell of a lot of other pitchers. If there's any consololation for the Cainer it's that somebody looked at some numbers and came up with some stat called "Worst Records by Pitchers Who Are That Unhittable" and he's ranked fifth, right below such notables as Nolan Ryan and Walter Johnson. Pretty good company, there. Pretty, pretty, pretty good. So cheer up, Matt, anytime you get to be in the same company as Ryan and the Big Train your in good company.

Ignatz Award Nomination For SFist Favorite 'Minty' Lewis' P.S.
Even though he defected to Los Angeles, we were tickled when local fave Keith Knight took home a Harvey Award. Now another Bay Area sequential artist is up for a prestigious comics industry award. Melanie "Minty" Lewis was nominated for an Ignatz Award for her P.S. Comics #3, a book we bought at this years' Alternative Press Expo and totally loved.

The winners will be named at the Small Press Expo (SPX), a Bethesda, MD-based event taking place in October. According to the event's Web site :

"The Ignatz Awards, named for the character in the classic comic strip Krazy Kat by George Herriman, is a festival prize that recognizes outstanding achievement in comics and cartooning. The ballot is created by a panel of five cartoonists and is then voted on by the attendees at the event. This offers a unique reflection of the views the professionals and their fans."

Lewis admitted to us that she's "up against some strong contenders." Well, true, but even if she doesn't win, we're hoping this'll give her mini-comics -- and storytelling skills -- a much deserved publicity boost. Good luck!
Lewis and her "Fruit Pals"; photo by SFist Jer from Alternative Press Expo '07

Week Around The -ists

While SFist cringed at the fatal dose <a href="http://sfist.com/2007/07/26/a_brutal...

misc

Austin

Austinist

bars

Bay Area

bloggers

Carolyn Kellogg

Chicagoist

City

Clinton

college

court

crime

DEA

Fashion

Fashion Week

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

Fred Camino

Green

Green LA Girl

Hillary Clinton

Indiana

LA

LA City

LA City Nerd

Lady Bird

Lady Bird Johnson

LAist

Lake Michigan

Marijuana

Marshall Field

medical marijuana

Michigan

On Wednesday

pollution

publicity

San Francisco

San Francisco Fashion Week

sf

smoking

smoking ban

Spoon

suburbs

taxi commission

university

Wednesday

Week in -Ists

Zuma Dogg

Brock Keeling

Over at Chicagoist, readers weighed in with their favorite memories of a local concert venue celebrating its silver anniversary and railed about the passage of a statewide smoking ban for Illinois. On Wednesday, the DEA raided 10 local medical marijuana clinics while TARGET's newest three-story store soft-launched to almost no one. Nonstop rains of the past two months have led to a cricket infestation, plus A university professor claimed that obese girls are less likely to attend college, and another report showed that Austin's suburbs are among the fastest growing in the nation. Meanwhile, locals are up in arms over a secret Spoon show.

So a bunch of bloggers had a few drinks last night, or as someone on the Wall and SF Junto put it "some lame meeting of whiney bloggers at a hipster bar” when Alex and Maggie of the strangely peculiar blog, The Mayor and the Hair, came by and asked if one of them was Dean of Gavin Sucks. It was. And so, they dumped their alcohol on poor Dean, who had to spend the rest of the night wearing a wine and beer soaked shirt.

Now this would be nothing except the video of it, in a very shaky form, appeared on their web site and thus started a blog war. Alex and Maggie said it was all done to make a statement about "spleen-spewing blogs driven by pure jealousy." In response, Dean said

"the whole mess smacks of a East Coast-West Coast Hip Hop rivalry resurrected between new Death Row Blogger, ‘2Smac’ Gavin Sucks.com and the ‘Notorious P.I.G.’ Gavin Newsom."
And since us bloggers are the narcissistic sort, the affair was written about by Left In SF's Sasha who called the whole thing "surreal" and brought out his inner-film critic to add that "they totally blew the money shot, so there’s only a vertigo-inducing flailing camera rather than actual footage of Dean getting doused." Over on Calitics, Blogswarm gives a little history lesson on other blogger smack-downs and said the whole thing was the "most brazen link whoring publicity stunt I've ever seen online."

Hmm... this was a publicity stunt? No, couldn't be.

As for us, who witnessed the whole thing (you'll see us in the background, looking confused) we would also describe it as surreal and sort of performance art-y. But also way too cold of a night to pour alcohol on somebody.
Okay, our treatment of Muni drivers hasn't been totally kind lately, but that doesn't mean we hate them. We yearn -- -- to write some stories about awesome drivers. And lo and behold, the opportunity to do so just fell into our lap, thanks to Muni's publicity agents.

It would seem that last Valentine's Day, some dude dropped his wallet on a bus. And the driver found it, called the number on the insurance company card, got the insurance company to get in touch with the guy, and then delivered the wallet back to its owner during a subsequent run. Now that's service! Nobody seems to know who the guy was, or who the driver was, or even what line it was (they think it's the 24), which makes the story tragically unverifiable. Time to head for the hills.

Mountain biking is a grass-roots sport that is only about one bake sale above your local group ride in terms of publicity and prestige, but it is an exciting sport that requires intense fitness, training, and dedication. At SFist, we understand the sport and the culture around it. We also understand what makes a good mountain bike race. To that end, we've reviewed the 2007 MTB racing season in order to provide our readers with a summary of this year's most interesting Northern California events.

So grab your bike, sharpen your elbows, and strap on a number plate for some challenging dirt action, or pack up the camp chairs, the cooler, and the kids, and head out to the races for a cheap day of fun and entertainment. Even if you aren't interested in competing, check out some of these events. You will see amazing feats of cycling prowess, discover the latest in space-age materials and designs, and probably pick up an armful of free posters, stickers, and other industry schwag.

No, he's also missing out on the U.S. Conference of Mayors, a less exciting but probably more relevant meeting featuring a Special Guest Appearance by Ms. Pelosi herself. This is bringing the usual jabs from the usual jabbers, mainly Messer’s Daly and Peskin.

Gavin's press guy, Peter Ragone, however, says it's in the best interests of the city for Gavin to go. Besides the fact it's an honor to be invited (it's not like the Mayor of Poughkeepsie New York is invited) but in all the networking and brainstorming, Gavin will be able to put together innovative and cutting edge ideas like city-wide Wi-Fi and environmental plans. We actually aren't surprised Gavin would find this more exciting than answering questions from Chris Daly as this is the kind of stuff Gavin thrives in-- wonkishly earnest discussions about ending such stuff as third world debt, global warming, and orphan kidnappings by publicity seeking celebrities. And actually, would you rather hang out with Brangelina or would you rather hang out with the above mentioned Mayor of Poughkeepsie? Or go to Washington D.C. or Switzerland?

Indeed, there are things that will be discussed at the meeting that are expected to help Gavin out, such as "The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Symposium on Ending Malaria and Making the 38 Geary Run on Time, " as well as the "The Bill Clinton Seminar on Third World Debt Relief and Annoying I-Team Reporters."

Gavin is listed as "not yet responded" (we're sure he's getting automated reminders to rsvp even as we speak), but mayoral spokesman Peter Ragone has already declined the invitation on Gavin's behalf, saying that Daly's request is a "publicity stunt." Daly responds that Newsom is ignoring the fact that the city's budget analyst has noted a number of problems with the mayor's office's request and recommended that the request be put on hold.

We also liked the drop-down menu Daly's provided for "Please select something to bring," with the options of "thoughtful violence prevention plan" and "supporting documentation for expenditures."
