Seven individuals who face a raft of felony and misdemeanor charges stemming from a Tax Day demonstration in 2024 that shut down the Golden Gate Bridge for several hours are facing trial starting this week.

The trial of the Golden Gate Seven, who used to be the Golden Gate 26, kicked off Wednesday in San Francisco Superior Court, and it will be a battle between the perception of need for protest action, and the real-time impacts such actions can have on innocent bystanders whose lives are disrupted — as well as the need for a major piece of infrastructure to remain unobstructed.

The San Francisco District Attorney’s office has charged these seven individuals with felony conspiracy, along with multiple counts of false imprisonment, unlawful assembly, and willful restriction of free movement, the latter three of which are misdemeanors. If convicted, they could face up to 14 years in prison.

The group was part of a larger group who shut down the southbound lanes of the Golden Gate Bridge on April 15, 2024, 26 of whom were arrested and initially charged with felony false imprisonment and a slew of other charges — many of which were subseqently dismissed by a judge that November.

The entire bridge ended up remaining closed for about four hours, after CHP officers shutdown the northbound lanes as they worked to address the protest on the southbound side.

The group became known as the Golden Gate 26, or GG26, but as KQED explains, 18 of them had their charges reduced to misdemeanors and ultimately dismissed, and one other individual who faced felony charges saw those charges dismissed for lack of evidence.

A judge in the case ultimately declined to reduce the charges for the final seven in the group, partly in light of the $160,000 in restitution of toll money that was being sought by the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. That sum has since been reduced to $5,300 for all 26 involved, or about $330 apiece.

As the trial begins, attorneys for the Golden Gate Seven are laying out arguments for why their clients believed that shutting down bridge traffic that day was necessary to stop the ongoing genocide and war in Gaza. Their protest action was part of a nationwide, coordinated effort on Tax Day 2024 to shut down major freeways which also included a similar human-chain protest on I-880 in Oakland.

In both the SF and Oakland protests, a tactic known as "sleeping dragon" was employed, which makes a human chain harder to break apart by law enforcement. In the Oakland protest, concrete was poured into buckets over the protesters' interlocked hands, and in the Golden Gate protest, demonstrators locked hands inside of metal tubes.

Per the Chronicle, "Many of the defense attorneys  — each representing a separate defendant — said their clients had already tried more conventional calls to action. They had written to Congress, called their representatives, marched in permitted protests and attended events where politicians were speaking."

But, as Deputy Public Defender Nuha Abusamra said in court, "nothing changed. The death toll was increasing because of our tax dollars funding the genocide... It was time for civil disobedience."

Another attorney, trying to argue for why jurors should set aside harms that were done to commuters and those trying to travel across the bridge into San Francisco, reportedly made the analogy of a good Samaritan pushing a child out of the way of an oncoming car, which causes the child to be minorly injured.

"Technically, your act of shoving that kid out of the way is what caused him the injury, but at the time you dove into the street, you didn't have the criminal intent to hurt him, you had the intent to save his life," said attorney Jac Lyons, per the Chronicle.

As Mission Local reports, defense attorneys also highlighted their clients media consumption as a reason for their actions. Attorney EmilyRose Johns, who represents defendant Rocky Chau, told the jury, "The information that they were ingesting day to day was relentless. What is someone like Mr. Chau supposed to do, when no one will listen, and when the news is relentless and when the suffering is relentless?"

Meanwhile, the prosecution presented an opening argument centered on the significant delays and inconveniences that were caused to hundreds of drivers on the bridge that day. Those included a surgeon who was forced to cancel all of their operations that day, and a person with a brain tumor who was forced to miss a medical appointment.

"People missed doctors’ appointments, nurses were missing from their jobs, children were forced to defecate in bags, people had little to no water,” said Assistant District Attorney Angela Roze. “Because these seven individuals decided that their cause, their message, was more important."

"While you may agree with their cause, and it may be an important one, it does not excuse breaking the law," Roze added.

The trial is expected to last until late July.

A protest is being planned Saturday with organizers saying they want to push the CEOs of artificial intelligence companies to pause the development of the technology.

Without being explicit about what they would want accomplished during a pause in the development of AI, a group calling itself Stop the AI Race has planned several rallies on Saturday outside the offices of three San Francisco AI companies: Anthropic, OpenAI, and xAI. Their one demand, they say, is "every CEO must publicly commit to pausing frontier AI development if every other lab does the same."

"Demis Hassabis (CEO of Google DeepMind) already said he'd be open to a conditional pause at Davos in January 2026," the group says on its event page. "That was the main ask of our Google DeepMind protest in September 2025. Dario Amodei also said at Davos he'd 'figure something out' if it were only him and Demis in the race. And OpenAI's charter already includes a commitment to stop competing if another lab is closer to AGI."

"​But," they continue, "in February, Anthropic quietly dropped its own commitment to pause if its AI became too dangerous. And OpenAI has been weakening its safety commitments as it restructures into a for-profit corporation."

The group asks the CEOs, "would you pause if every other major AI company in the world pauses?" But, of course, that would entail getting all Chinese companies to agree to this pause as well, and that seems impossible.

Still, this isn't likely to be the last general protest we're going to see against the AI industry, particularly as more human jobs get lost to bots. Another group, called Stop AI, has been staging small demonstrations around the Bay Area for two years now, with a mission to end the industry, full stop, and "prioritize biological life."

And while fairly different, this protest on Saturday is reminiscent of the anti-tech protests of the early 2010s, which were mostly focused on issues of gentrification, rising housing costs, and the small army of tech shuttle buses that suddently began clogging SF streets — which came to symbolize how privileged tech workers who worked on the Peninsula were driving up housing costs for everyone.

Saturday's first rally will begin outside Anthropic's headquarters at 500 Howard Street, at noon. From there, following speeches at 1 pm, the group plans to walk to Mission Bay, to OpenAI's headquarters at 1455 Third Street. After speeches there, they will proceed to xAI's offices at 3180 18th Street, where some short concluding speeches will occur at 3:30, before the group heads to "celebrate" at Dolores Park.

The Friday night dance party takes place on an I-80 overpass in Berkeley, a daytime protest hotspot, transforming the bridge into a glowing display of support for the Bay Area community and those protecting democracy, while urging an estimated 12,000 cars per hour to "honk" in solidarity.

Since January, a group of local residents of all ages called NICE (Not ICE), spearheaded by activist Jennifer Quinn, have been donning their frog costumes and glo-sticks and heading to the I-80 pedestrian overpass in Berkeley (at University Avenue) for a weekly, disco-style "Visibility Dance Party" every Friday night.

“Bring the kids, snacks to share, a community spirit, bubbles, delights, twinkle lights, bring your art, and come as you are,” says the group’s Indivisible page.

As the SF Standard reports, the overpass is a popular, long-held hotspot for holding protests due to its high visibility — the group’s Indivisible page estimates 12,000 cars fly under the bridge every hour.

“Every honk is somebody saying, ‘Yes, we agree,’” Quinn told KPIX. “We are here to protect our democracy and our community, and this is just a really fun way to do that.”

Quinn told KPIX the concept was first spawned by a costume joke last Halloween. She then attended a daytime protest on the bridge in January and met Indivisible East Bay volunteer Maria Shanle. The two came up with the idea to transform the space at night when the bridge is essentially empty, but the freeway below is highly active, per the Standard.

The organizers aim to keep the event bright and accessible for everyone, especially families.

It’s “something new and fresh for the drivers,” Shanle told the Standard, as she handed out treats and strobe lights to attendees. “A very positive, open, welcoming and family-friendly environment.”

The dance party format helps bring people together from all walks of life.

“There’s an interesting confluence of energy that’s taking place here,” Vera Chang, a professor of environmental justice at St. Mary’s College, who attended the dance party with her family, told the Standard. “People are reaching deep inside themselves for reasons to have hope and to generate change.”

“The idea of going to protest is really intimidating to a lot of people, even if people feel strongly about the encroachment of tyranny,” said Quinn.

Quinn told the Standard she’s looking to hire a DJ who can “make teenagers dance,” and she hopes to inspire people to make new connections at the dance party.

“NICE stands for ‘now it counts everyone.’ Now, everyone's got to show up. Got to show up for community,” Quinn told KPIX. “And you can start here and make some friends.”

Sonoma County Sheriff Eddie Engram held a meet-and-greet in Bodega Bay Wednesday, which was met with a group of local protesters and community members denouncing the sheriff for handing over 70 people to ICE in 2025, urging him to support a proposed non-compliance ordinance.

As KTVU reports, a standard meet-and-greet that Sonoma County Sheriff Eddie Engram held for west county residents in Bodega Bay Wednesday evening ended up serving as a platform for the larger Sonoma County community to air their grievances to the sheriff for cooperating with ICE, including protestors from the Sonoma County Sanctuary Coalition.

The protesters, many of them with the Sonoma County Sanctuary Coalition, pointed out that 70 people were released to ICE officials last year, explaining that state law enables the sheriff to refuse participating with ICE altogether, per KTVU.

"People are going straight from the jail, after they've served their sentences, to ICE detention and eventually deportation," said Renee Saucedo of the Sonoma County Sanctuary Coalition.

Sheriff Engram argued that his office only acts on warrants from a judge and strictly notifies ICE about immigrants with serious or violent convictions. As Hoodline reports, the sheriff’s office provided the community with details on its policies in a May 11, 2025 letter.

“We only have contact with ICE for serious and violent felonies and only those who have been convicted. My decisions are based on what I think is overall better for community safety,” said Engram, per KTVU.

As KTVU reports, the sanctuary coalition is urging the sheriff and other county officials to support their non-compliance ordinance, which would “legally prohibit the use of County resources to aid federal immigration enforcement, except when absolutely required by state or federal law,” per the group’s website.

According to the coalition’s website, the ordinance “builds upon past actions by the Board of Supervisors, including protections for DACA recipients, support for immigrant legal defense, and public opposition to ICE collaboration, by finally codifying these protections into law.”

Hoodline notes that Sonoma County Supervisor Chris Coursey recently changed his position on the county’s relationship with ICE and has begun pushing the county to cut ties, as reported by the outlet KRCB.

The sanctuary coalition says it will continue to put pressure on the sheriff and board of supervisors to support the ordinance.

Activists from a group called Contra-ICE stealthily handed out over 15,000 towels at Levi’s Stadium Sunday, which featured the message “ICE Out” and a bunny illustration by acclaimed artist Lalo Alcaraz to coincide with Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl halftime performance.

As the Chronicle reports, a group of artists and organizers from the collective Contra-ICE launched a creative act of resistance ahead of the Super Bowl game Sunday inspired by halftime performer Bad Bunny. Per Newsweek, volunteers located at multiple entrances at Levi’s Stadium surreptitiously passed out around 15,000 towels featuring the message “ICE Out” on one side and a bunny illustration by the award-winning, Los Angeles-based cartoonist Lalo Alcaraz on the other.

Per the Chronicle, the bunny is depicted wearing Bad Bunny’s signature Puerto Rican jibaro hat and holding a grenade, which is reportedly a reference to Green Day, along with the band's album American Idiot, while kicking a block of ice with a football inside. Per Newsweek, the illustration also includes a QR code that directed participants to wave the towels during the game when penalty flags were raised.

As the Los Angeles Times reports, about 50 volunteers helped with the effort, which was inspired by Bad Bunny’s outspoken support for the immigrant and Latin American communities, as he vocalized last week at the Grammys. “We're not savage, we're not animals, we're not aliens. We are humans and we are Americans,” proclaimed the singer.

Additionally, as KRON4 reports, about 300 protestors gathered outside the stadium Sunday, marching and holding "ICE Out" signs throughout the game.

“Today is a celebration of American sports, and there are opportunities to really be heard here,”  Shasti Conrad, one of Contra-ICE’s leaders and a vice chair of the Democratic National Committee, told the Times. “It’s about drawing attention to show that there is massive support to challenge Trump and the Department of Homeland Security. Any opportunity to push back is important.”

A few dozen supporters showed up for Saturday’s decidedly unironic “March for Billionaires” protest, which was evenly matched by several members of the press and a group of activists one-upping the sympathizers with a satirical “March for Trillionaires” rally.

As Mission Local reports, a small contingent of billionaire supporters, who claim they’re not actually billionaires themselves, held a “March for Billionaires” protest at Alta Plaza Park in San Francisco’s Pacific Heights Saturday morning. Naturally, the event drew a crowd of onlookers, including several journalists and about a dozen animated protestors dressed in formal wear, proclaiming they were taking part in a “March for Trillioinaires,” per Broke-Ass Stuart on Instagram.

As SFist reported earlier this week, many assumed the original march was some sort of joke, but the organizers confirmed their intention was to spread awareness about their grievances against the billionaire tax. Per the LA Times, the pro-billionaire crowd thinks Californians should be grateful for the billionaires who hoard their fortunes here.

“We must not judge billionaires as a class but by their individual merits,” said organizer Derik Kauffman Saturday, per the Times. “There are good billionaires and bad billionaires, just like there are good people and bad people. California is extraordinarily lucky that this is where people come to start companies and build fortunes and we should do our best to keep it that way.”

As the Chronicle reports, about a dozen nearby counter-protestors dressed to the nines — including a Mr. Monopoly lookalike and a couple nicknamed “Oli Garch” and “Trilly O’Naire,” per the Times, held signs with messages such as “Let them eat cake” and “Defund the poor,” per the Chronicle. Per Broke-Ass Stuart, one participant sported a chef’s hat and bushy mustache while hoisting a stuffed “Chef Bourgeoisie” puppet into the air.

Meanwhile, the pro-billionaire participants boasted signs with messages, such as, “We *heart* you Jeffrey Bezos,” per Mission Local, and “Gains from trade,” per the Chronicle.

“I would say we were horrified that they’ve been talking about taxing billionaires to pay for Medicaid, to pay for hunger prevention, to pay for kids’ education. That is not a good use of my money,” quipped a counter-protestor, per the Chronicle. “You want to know a good use of my money? I’ve got this other island I’m looking at.”

Per Mission Local, a pro-billionaire protestor named Annie provided some choice quotes, including the notion that journalists should be eliminated.

“It is the intention of journalists to lie, which is why we need to not do anything to the journalists themselves, but we need to simply remove them as a class,” said Annie, per Mission Local. “Just like Germany does to the extremist organizations.”

And of course, the poors are “just jealous.” “People are just jealous that they are poorer and weaker and uglier,” said Annie, per Mission Local. “We are beautiful. We’re smart. We’re strong… We are supporting the billionaires, here.”

Artist Razelle Swimmer, the counter-protestor who brought the Chef Bourgeoisie puppet, pointed out the absurdity of the pro-billionaire stance to the Chronicle. “There are people literally on the streets that don’t have anything to eat in the place where we’re ending this march,” said Swimmer, referring to the Civic Center area.

“It’s sad,” Swimmer said, per the Chronicle. “They represent a group of Americans who still believe in this concept that if you just pull yourself hard enough by your bootstraps, you’ll have $8 billion.”

Michale Graves, vocal Trump supporter and late ’90s-era frontman for punk band the Misfits, whom some refer to as “Temu Glenn Danzig,” is scheduled to perform at an auto body shop in Novato later this month, prompting an upcoming three-day protest and backlash online.

A poster in the Bay Area subreddit alerted the community this week about an upcoming show featuring punk musician Michale Graves, who testified on behalf of five Proud Boys involved in the January 6 insurrection. While commenters on the Reddit post pointed out that any mention of the show will only serve to bring more attention to the event (see the Streisand Effect), a local group of activists has planned a weekend-long protest leading up to the show.

“Known Proud Boy Supporter, Michale Graves, is scheduled to perform in Novato Jan 31st,” the original Reddit poster writes. “We are taking some notes from Texas and protesting. We don’t welcome white supremacy in our community,”.

As the Chronicle reports, Buddy’s Music Office, which is located at Buddy’s Auto Body & Restoration in the North Bay city of Novato, published an Instagram post on January 6 promoting the show, which also happens to be the fifth anniversary of the riot at the Capitol, leading to swarms of angry commenters demanding that the organizer cancel the show. The comments have since been deleted, and further commenting on the post has been disabled, per the Chronicle.

“If you can’t separate the art from the artist, that’s fine, but please don’t harass others or leave false reviews etc,” the venue responded. “Yaall (sic) are better than that. Cry in your own houses and let others enjoy the love of music in theirs. Cheers my friends.”

As KRON4 reports, backlash from protestors in other cities has gotten Graves’s gigs canceled in the past, including a show in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania last February. Per the Reddit post, protesters in San Antonio, Texas, persuaded a venue to cancel Graves’s show last April, which was moved to a second venue where protestors lined the street and sidewalk, as reported by News 4 San Antonio.

Per the Chronicle, protesters plan to meet at the intersection of Bel Marin Keys and Galli Drive in Novato January 29 through 31 at 3:30 pm each day, according to the Reddit post. "Let them know racism and fascism aren't welcome in our community," reads the post.

There were multiple protests Saturday around the Bay Area expressing rage over the killing of a Minneapolis mother of three at the hands of an ICE agent with a gun, including a gathering at Ocean Beach to spell out another aerially photographed message.

There have been multiple human-spelled messages on Ocean Beach, photographed via drone, in protest of Donald Trump and the actions of his dispicable administration. And there was another Saturday in which hundreds spelled out the message "IT WAS MURDER - ICE OUT!!" with an upside-down American flag.

Previous human banners like this have taken place for No Kings Day protests, and there was a "Yes on 50" human banner at Ocean Beach in mid-October, prior to the November election.

As the Chronicle reports, there was a simultaneous protest Saturday that attracted hundreds at the intersection of Van Ness Avenue and O'Farrell Street, with plenty of anti-Trump signage. And a third protest took shape in the Mission District as well.

The Trump administration and its fans have continued to promulgate the narrative that Good was a "paid agitator" of some kind — and your Xitter feed, if you still have one, is likely full of such messages. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem wasted no time after the killing to cast Good as a "domestic terrorist."

Good, along with her lesbian partner, had just dropped off Good's youngest son, who is six, at elementary school, when the encounter with ICE occurred. It's not clear how her vehicle came to be blocking the road, but it did not appear to be a pre-planned encounter with federal agents.

Good's ex-husband, who asked that his name be kept out of the press, told the Associated Press that she was "no activist" and he had never known her to participate in any sort of protest. She and her wife, Becca Good, had recently relocated to Minneapolis from Kansas City, Missouri.

Becca Good put out a statement, per Minnesota Public Radio, saying, "On Wednesday, January 7th, we stopped to support our neighbors. We had whistles. They had guns."

The statement also said that Renee Good was "made of sunshine," and "Renee was a Christian who knew that all religions teach the same essential truth: we are here to love each other, care for each other, and keep each other safe and whole."

Hundreds marched through San Francisco's Mission District Wednesday night following a deadly shooting by ICE agents across the country in Minneapolis, and there was a simultaneous protest in Oakland as well.

"We’ve already been seeing them throw people to the ground, now they’re just going to shoot them point blank in the window," says one of last night's protesters, Jennifer Dees of San Francisco, speaking to NBC Bay Area.

"I'm here in San Francisco marching with hundreds of people marching to demand justice for Renee Nicole Good, who was killed by ICE in Minnesota today while protecting her Somali immigrant neighbors," says Sanika, an activist with the Party for Socialism and Liberation, in a video posted to social media. "On less than three hours notice, we've gathered hundreds of people here alongside protests across the country. ICE brings terror and violence to our communities wherever they go, but we know the people will rise up and fight back against these attacks and all attacks on working people."

As KTVU reports, a group of around 100 protesters also gathered outside the downtown San Francisco ICE facility on Sansome Street Wednesday night, along with a protest that formed in Oakland.

Per NBC Bay Area, a protest was planned Thursday morning in San Jose, and another is planned Thursday evening in Pleasanton.

Renee Nicole Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was reportedly driving home from dropping off her six-year-old son at school when she and her partner encountered ICE agents on their street in Minneapolis. As CNN explains, Good, in the driver's seat of an SUV, was partly blocking the street as an ICE SUV approached, and stopped, telling them to "go around." Agents are then seen getting out of their car and demanding she get out of hers.

Several agents approach the driver's side window, one saying "Get the fuck out of the car," and one ICE agent who was standing near the front of the car, draws his weapon and shoots Good after she accelerated forward, bumping him out of the way. Her car then is seen crashing into a parked car.

Video of the incident, in which ICE agents do not appear in much or any danger from Good's vehicle, has widely circulated, and both President Trump and Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem are sparking ire for their attempts to cast Good as a "domestic terrorist," and to tell people what they saw with their own eyes isn't true.

"This appears as an attempt to kill or to create bodily harm to agents, an act of domestic terrorism," Noem said.

On Truth Social, Trump wrote, referring first to a neighbor who was screaming from behind the camera about the shooting itself, "The woman screaming was, obviously, a professional agitator, and the woman driving the car was very disorderly, obstructing and resisting, who then violently, willfully, and viciously ran over the ICE Officer, who seems to have shot her in self defense. Based on the attached clip, it is hard to believe he is alive, but is now recovering in the hospital."

The mayor of Minneapolis, Jacob Frey, quickly called "bullshit" on the president's response to the situation, and has been outspoken in the last 24 hours about the gravity of the situation with ICE's continued incursions in American cities.

"What they are doing is not to provide safety in America. What they are doing is causing chaos and distrust," Frey said of ICE. "They're ripping families apart. They're sowing chaos on our streets, and in this case, quite literally killing people."

Minneapolis has been a particular focus of ICE activity in the last month as the president ramped up his rhetoric about Somali immigrants living there.
