Live: SEIU Protest At San Francisco City Hall In Progress

Justin Beck is live at City Hall covering today's SEIU occupation. So far there are an estimated hundred or so protesters inside, one brandishing a bullhorn to shout and chant stuff. Supervisors Eric Mar and David Campos have shouted into the bullhorn. Others might too. Cops are at the scene and reportedly "concerned about the noise level." It's all very exciting. (Not season finale of RuPaul's Drag Race exciting, but thrilling nevertheless.) Anyway, we'll keep an eye on the scene. If you'd like to watch it live, visit Justin Beck's UStream or view it below. more ›

SEIU Planning Wisconsin-Style Occupation Of San Francisco City Hall

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) local 1021 will attempt a Wisconsin-style occupation of San Francisco City Hall starting tonight and going well into tomorrow, May Day. Via the SEIU Facebook page, "We will take back city hall, Wisconsin style! This is IT. Arbitration begins Monday. We need to send a clear message to the Mayor and Board of Supervisors: Give us a fair contract!" SEIU, the city's most powerful public employee union, wants businesses "to pay more for the city services they enjoy, which workers hope would stave off pay cuts or increased health care payments," reports The Chronicle. Specifically, they're calling for Mayor Ed Lee's business tax proposal to pull in roughly $25 million to $40 million more than the $400 million the current business tax does each year. more ›

Occupy's Plan To Shut Down Golden Gate Bridge Cancelled

Occupy's Plan To Shut Down Golden Gate Bridge Cancelled

Er, never mind. Occupy's plan to shut down the Golden Gate Bridge on May 1st has been cancelled. Occupy will instead focus on ferry service. Why? Well, part of it could be that the Golden Gate Bridge District just agreed to pay a reported $2 million to "380 workers represented by 14 unions who have been out of contract since July 2011 over a dispute about medical insurance costs passed on to workers," reports Susie Cagle for SF Appeal. more ›

Oakland's Oaksterdam University Shut Down By Federal Agents [Updated]

Federal agents from the U.S. Marshals Service, the DEA and the IRS descended on Oaksterdam University sometime after 7 a.m. this morning, effectively shutting down the cannabis industry trade school school while carrying out a federal search warrant. Because all the paperwork for the raid is still under seal, an IRS spokeswoman on the scene could not disclose the reasons for the sudden closure other than to confirm that it is part of an ongoing joint investigation. NBC Bay Area reports that the school at 16th and Broadway, the nearby Oaksterdam gift shop and the Oakland Cannabis Buyers Cooperative were all among the four locations shut down by the feds this morning. more ›

Protest At Apple Store For Friday's iPad Release

Just like the release of the iPhone 4s and iPad 2, tomorrow's new iPad release at the Stockton Street Apple store in San Francisco will play host to a group of protesters. And this year, things could get more rousing than that previous Apple store melee. This American Life, as you may recall, recently revealed that the working conditions at Foxconn — one of Apple's primary factories, where workers "toil for low pay in exploitative conditions to make our shiny Apple products" — are, well, deplorable. more ›

Occupy Wall Street West Plans Day Of Disruption, Activism In S.F. [Livestream]

At around 6 a.m. Friday, Occupy Wall Street West began its day-long, rain-soaked protest, which, if all goes according to plan, will disrupt business as usual in San Francisco's Financial District. First on the agenda, at least according to the OWSW itinerary, was to fry up some squid in front of Goldman Sachs. Why? Well, as OSW points, "[b]ack in 2009 Matt Taibbi referred to Goldman Sachs as 'a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money.' Video: Pedestrian Intentionally Hit By Car During Occupy Oakland Strike?

The following footage (via KTVU) shows a pedestrian being hit by car in downtown Oakland during the general strike. While, of course, the pedestrian could have moved and not slammed the hood of the driver's admittedly snazzy car--a point some of you might argue--it does appear that the driver intentionally plowed through the protesters. And, well, that's wrong. And bad. Very bad. more ›
