This is probably one of the sweetest things we've seen in our lives. On the morning after a euphoric night of celebrating the New York State Senate's decision to legalize same-sex marriage, contributor Garth Johnston penned a lovely proposal to his boyfriend of five and a half years, Woody Loverude, on Gothamist:

When I went out the night of November 22, 2005, I don't know what I was looking for, but it wasn't the love of my life. And yet here we are. The next morning I sent myself an e-mail, the entire body of which read: "His name is Woody Loverude."

Protesting Mayor Newsom's Shiny New Budget

Speaking of our fine mayor, Newsom's recently released budget plan, it seems, will "terminate critical health and human services, while pumping up salaries for police by 25% and adding many new high paid patronage positions into his own administration," at least according to the folks over at something called the People's Budget Collaborative, brought to you by the loopy kids at the Coalition on Homelessness. They claim the following cuts will happen. Ahem:

1) Closure Ella Hill Hutch shelter serving up to 100 people every night in the Western Addition.
2) Closure of Caduceus Outreach Services, a mental health treatment and wrap around support program for severely disabled homeless adults with co-existing addictive disorders.

3) Almost total elimination (66% cut) of SRO Families United program for families with dependent children living in hotels.

4) Cut of 22% to residential substance abuse and mental health treatment programs budgets.
a. Removal of support from Conard supportive housing program for severe psychiatric disabilities.
b. Closure of Cortland Acute Diversion Unit for individuals in psychiatric crisis.
c. Loss of 12 out of 24 community based medically supported detox beds.
d. Many more residential cuts yet to be determined.

Show Us Your Pink Slips: Newsom To Eliminate 450 City Employees From the Payroll

While he wouldn't say whether or not Cynthia Thompson will receive a much deserved ax, today Mayor Gavin Newsom did announce that he will hack away at some 1,000 city jobs as well as "limiting overtime costs and raising some city fees." Overall, 450 workers stand to lose their jobs. (And thus 450 sandwich artists are born.)

Newsom unveiled his shiny new 2008-2009 budget proposal over at the Hunters Point Shipyard this morning. During today's press conference, according to the Gate, Newsom boasted of the city finally meeting "its mandated goal of having 1,971 police officers on the streets," possible by September (which will presumably have little to no effect); wanting to hand Healthy San Francisco, the magical program that will give health care to uninsured city residents, a cool $37 million; bragged about our downtown (which, yeah, is kind of awesome); and "bristled"--bristled!!--at the mere thought that the city government is growing a wee bit too fast.

Aaanyway, the next must be done by July 1 in order for the the Board of Supervisors get all hysterical about it. The Board of Supes and city department budgeting? We can hardly wait.

In other news, San Francisco has culled in billions and billions of traveler dollars over the past year. The LA Times tells us that "that city’s Convention & Visitors Bureau reports that tourists spent $8.2 billion there in 2007, an increase of 6.2% over the year before and an all-time high." Oh my, indeed.

San Francisco Proposal For George W. Bush Sewage Plant Gets the FOX Treatment

As most of you know by now, the George W Bush Sewage Plant proposal--news that SFist broke way back in March (yay, us!)--is making the rounds all across this great country of ours. And after landing on FOX News last week, the steady stream of hate mail makes for a fantastic read. Here are two of our favorite,most thought-provoking rebuttals so far. Ahem:

You truly are a cancerous ulcer on the anus of an AIDs Infected faggot. You think this is funny, why don’t you go and do something that is worth while instead of making a mockery of our President. If you don’t like this country then get the FUCK OUT. Better yet, take the majority of those knee jerk liberals from the Bay Area with you. Go try Lebanon or Iran and see how far your nonsense will take you there. The rest of this great country don’t need you and the rest of those knee jerk liberals up there with you.

Geek Love: Marriage Proposal Via iPhone Ad Parody

While cruising over at ValleyWag -- their editors are kinda cute, yes? -- we came across an iPhone ad parody that is, in fact, an actual marriage proposal created by one "Claude M" for "Doris," his honeybunney. How entirely sterile and unromantic.

We love it.

Although if anyone ever offers us exceptionally large diamond ring (sigh), we hope it's done via a Jack In The Box or L'Oreal-Penelope Cruz commercial parody. We love those ads, and they're far less cloying than iPhone's.
