SF Bay Guardian Is Sad About Mirkarimi Plea, Defends Him One More Time

Hey, everyone! The San Francisco Bay Guardian really kinda likes and respects Sheriff Ross Mirkarimi, and they hope that after this plea deal and everything, you'll all stop harshing on him and stuff. As Guardian editor Tim Redmond is quick to point out today in a lengthy editorial, the onetime capital-P Progressive golden boy of the Board of Supervisors was given no choice but to plead guilty if he wanted to continue bearing a firearm in his job, and this was pretty much just a take-down by Mirkarimi's less progressive enemies. Also, even if ex-girlfriend Christina Flores might have been similarly abused by Mirkarimi before he got with Ms. Lopez, she nevertheless penned a threatening poem after the breakup, which Redmond reprints for us now. more ›

Ross Mirkarimi Investigated In Alleged Domestic Abuse Incident

Sheriff-elect Ross Mirkarimi, who's being sworn in to his new post Sunday, is currently under investigation by the SFPD after an incident of alleged domestic abuse involving his wife over New Year's weekend. Mirkarimi's wife, former Venezuelan telenovela star Eliana Lopez, reportedly hid out in a neighbor's apartment after a physical fight with Mirkarimi, and the neighbor subsequently called police, according to Matier and Ross. Lopez made an official statement last night saying, "I have absolutely no complaint against my husband. My husband has never been abusive to me. Ross and I are committed to our marriage, our son and our family." more ›

Twitter Tax Break Issue Causes a Stir, Could End Up on November Ballot

As the Board's Budget and Finance committee gets set to review the Twitter Tax Break (neé "Payroll Expense Tax Exclusion in Central Market Street and Tenderloin Area") this Wednesday, rumblings are afoot. A tax exemption that would have repulsed last year's progressive sect could pass with this most recent crop of left-of-center supervisors. As the Chronicle points out today, previously progressive President Chiu and D6's replacement Jane Kim have been instrumental in supporting the tax break, which probably would have been deemed "welfare for the wealthy" a year ago. more ›

Chron Discusses the Fight for a Progressive Interim Mayor

Chron Discusses the Fight for a Progressive Interim Mayor

The Chron treads into Guardian territory today to discuss the drama surrounding the choice for interim mayor, which will be made by a liberal-majority Board of Supervisors in a simple majority vote. Do they choose someone who can get elected in the general election next November, or do they just pick a "caretaker" mayor who'll maintain the status quo until then? Do the majority of voters in S.F. these days swing pretty progressive anyway? Is it time for a real, capital P progressive to kick some shit up? more ›
