So says PG&E via their twitter feed just before 3 p.m. Friday afternoon. PG&E doesn't yet have an estimate for when the power will be back on, so if you were looking forward to heading home to the neighborhood, microwaving a hot pocket and firing up your TiVo, might we suggest alternate plans for the evening? No word yet on what is causing the outage, but we'll update when we know more. more ›

No 'Under 40' Gays of Note in City that Considers Itself Gayest

Following Out Magazine's 'Power 50' list, which failed to mention a single popular powerful San Francisco-based homosexual, The Advocate (the bookish bottom to Out's circuit party top) also came out with their annual 'Forty Under 40' issue this week. And, yet again, much to our dismay, no one on said list resides in Baghdad by the Bay. more ›

Newsom Wants More Wind to Power SF

Setting himself up for countless "hot air" punchlines, Gavin Newsom "is calling for windmills throughout the city," reports KCBS. An estimated 29 of them might pop up in SF sometime in the very near future. Or not. (Although he'd like to "streamline the permit process" to get them up ASAP.) Anyway, Newsom goes on to said that the wind turbines cold be put on historical landmarks. he also emotes, "wind is a rural or suburban phenomenon and not necessarily an urban phenomenon ... We believe wind needs to be part of the urban mix of renewables. Our goal is to have 50 megawatts of renewable energy being generated within the city and county of San Francisco over the next few decades." more ›

Mylar Balloon Causes Castro Power Outage

Mylar Balloon Causes Castro Power Outage

Last night in San Francisco's notoriously gay Castro neighborhood, 2,8000 were rewarded with forgiving, soft candlelight after a power outage hit the area for about an hour or so. The cause of the outage? A Mylar balloon. According to reports, "PG&E spokesman Andrew Souvall said the outage happened around 7:50 p.m. when a Mylar balloon hit electric wires." What's more, "[t]he incident caused a manhole cover to dislodge at Market Street and Duboce Avenue." [insert manhole/Castro joke here] Power was restored to the area around 9 p.m. more ›

No Power On 17th Street?

No Power On 17th Street?

We just received word that for the past two or three days (!?), 17th Street has been without power from at least Valencia up to Dolores. Anyone else have any word of this supposed outage? Seeing as how this is one attractive and expensive strip of real estate, right at the nexus of two neighborhoods, this is of the utmost importance. more ›
