Powell Cable Cars Down

The Powell cable cars are down this morning after a delivery tuck accidentally rammed a lamp post, which then fell and smashed into a window at Game Stop at 151 Powell.

SFist talked to an employee at Game Stop who told us, "some idiot driving his deliver truck backed up into lamp post twice." Which broke their window.

Said employee said that the gaming store should be open by mid-afternoon. [Thanks for the tip, Anita!]

The Powell cable cars, MTA spokesperson Judson True tells SFist, are "up."

Muni Meltdown at Powell

According to LiveJournaler extraordinaire and soon-to-be SF expatriate Jameth, there's a medical emergency at the Powell Muni station, causing chaos. According to his Twitter message, "Medical emergency at Powell station outbound. Muni meltdown. Pls use surface routes kthx. [2:58 p.m.] " Please adjust your route home accordingly. .

DANGER: Muni Cars Return to Claim More Victims

Muni issued an alert yesterday afternoon that said simply, "Emergency - Powell line cable cars back in service." Oh no! Emergency! Cable cars unleashed on an unsuspecting public! Save yourselves! Run for the hills! Oh no wait -- the hills are exactly where the cable cars WANT you to run!

Okay, okay, we jest. Obviously it's just a poor choice of words, not peril. We can't begin to guess why someone thought that "emergency" was an appropriate word to describe the reopening of cable car line -- perhaps the only good news to have come out of Muni in recent memory -- but anyway it made us giggle. Oh how we giggled. The giggling fools, that's what people called us.

Splat: Pie Fight Tonight

Screw the cardboard tube battle, this sounds like something that needs to happen every night.

This evening at 5 p.m. sharp, head on down to the tourist epicenter of San Francisco, the Powell Cable Car turnaround, for what will be a massive pie fight. According to Mr. Scott Beale over at Laughing Squid, SF0 player Herbie Hatman is organizing a formal-attire pie fight (think Mabel Normand, Keystone Cops) which will get all up in your face (and maybe an unsuspecting tourist or two.) And if we weren't such a bitch about getting out clothes dirty -- although, yes, we have two different kinds of cheese stains on our pants today -- we would go. But you should go. All of you.

Also, formal wear is encouraged and "shaving cream is much more pleasant than whipped cream," according to Hatman. Who knew?

UPDATE: Powell BART Station Shuts Down

"Trains headed into San Francisco from the East Bay were being turned around at Montgomery Street station, and trains headed to the East Bay from the Peninsula were being turned around at 24th Street Station or being allowed, in some cases, to pass on through Powell Street without stopping," we read in the Chronicle. Yikes.

Why? Because a body has been found under one of the BART trains. How the body ended up there or its current condition is unknown at this time. But a medical examiner has been called onto the scene, so...sounds like a not-alive body to us. Sadly.

UPDATE: After an apparent suicide, the Powell Bart Station reopened a little before 8 a.m. tonight. Witnesses claim "they saw the male victim get down onto the tracks and sit between the rails as the train was coming to the station. All signs are leading to suicide," said BART spokesman Linton Johnson.
