Designated originally for office, laboratory, or life science use, the building would become a clinic, precision cancer center, and health tech incubator.

Swiss architects Herzog & de Meuron, who designed the deYoung Museum, would design the new UCSF building, and they are also designing several other structures in the redevelopment project.

It's the latest development in a project that saw its first plans drafted in 2018 to reuse a 29-acre central waterfront property that housed a defunct power plant, next door to Pier 70. The plans also include residential, hotel, retail, and possible PDR (production, distribution, and repair) space. The project got its approvals in early 2020, and work began at the site almost two years ago.

Maps via SF Planning

Map showing UCSF's potential location at the project, via SF Planning

The only big piece of the project to break ground so far is a 105-unit affordable housing project called the Sophie Maxwell Building. The foundation on that has been poured, per the Chronicle, and sidewalks in the neighborhood have also begun construction.

UCSF Real Estate's senior associate vice chancellor, Brian Newman, confirmed that negotiations were ongoing for the new addition to UCSF Medical Center's ever-growing footprint in the city. "There is more due diligence to complete and approvals from the UC regents to obtain, but we are hopeful that we can move forward with this unique opportunity at Power Station,” Newman tells the Chronicle.

Mayor London Breed was already celebrating the possibility of UCSF's expansion, saying in a statement, "I am especially excited about expanding health care in this part of the city. UCSF has played a huge role in San Francisco’s public health care and as a leader in innovation for more than a century and I can’t think of a better fit."

The Power Station project will ultimately add 2,600 new housing units to the city, as well as 1.6 million square feet of commercial space, and a 250-room hotel.

Map via SF Planning

Enrique Landa, the project lead for developer Associate Capital, tells the Chronicle that they're glad to see some movement on the tenant front, as they try to keep the momentum going on the project. "These large projects are kind of like sharks: if they don’t keep moving they die," Landa tells the paper.

If the deal moves forward, construction on the new UCSF building would begin next year.

Construction also may begin soon on the first public park in the project area, which can be seen in the green area by the Bay in the above illustration. The pink circle in the green is the historic smokestack on the property, which is set to be preserved along with a couple of other historic structures from the power plant.

In renderings, the bottom of the smokestack is envisioned as a cafe or restaurant.

See that and a few other renderings below.

Rendering by Perkins & Will

Rendering by Perkins & Will

Rendering by Perkins & Will

Support Local Bands This Saturday At Phono Del Sol

Music, food trucks, and skateboarding all at Potrero Del Sol Park.

Arts & Entertainment

phono del sol

potrero

SF music

SF music festival

the bay bridged

Whitney Phaneuf

If you've been wanting to check out more local bands, but not sure where to start, there’s a chill music festival happening this Saturday, July 12, that’s an excellent primer on the local scene. Phono Del Sol features 10 bands — eight of which are local — plus five food trucks, pro skateboarders, and sun-bathing at Potrero Del Sol Park.

The festival’s promoter, local music blog The Bay Bridged, handpicked great performers in a variety of genres. Local favorites Thao & The Get Down Stay Down churn out exuberant folk with infectious melodies; Los Angeles’ Nick Waterhouse croons sexy, retro-soul songs that are GQ approved; San Francisco’s Blackbird Blackbird is the next Washed Out; and Tony Molina is a central figure in the Bay Area music scene, playing Weezer-esque power-pop as a solo artist and brutal hardcore in his band Caged Animal.

Truly, every act on this lineup is worth seeing, so take our recent advice and discover some new music. The Bay Bridged made a playlist of all the festival’s artists, which we’ve included below.

Plus it’s cheap: Tickets are $25 in advance or $30 at the door and you can buy them here.

The incident happened just after 3 a.m. Sunday, and the victim was with friends dropping someone off when shots rang out.

The driver of the car tried flip a U-Turn and speed away, but a bullet shattered the rear window of the car and hit the victim, who was rushed to the hospital with life-threatening injuries. It's unclear where on his body the victim was shot, but he remains alive as of today.

Police say that a driver targeting cyclists injured four people in the Mission and Potrero districts on Wednesday night. A male driver allegedly went after cyclists in four different locations in San Francisco: "in the 2700 block of Harrison Street, the 2800 block of 24th Street, at the intersection of 23rd and Pennsylvania streets, and at 17th and Missouri street."

San Francisco police Lt. Lyn Tomioka told KTVU, "There were four victims and all were believed to be on bicycles." Three of the victims were taken to the hospital to be treated for injuries. All victims are expected to survive.

At the end of his rampage, according to ABC 7, "[w]itnesses say the suspect driver was headed westbound on 17th Street when he veered off and slammed into a parked SUV. He then backed up and struck a cyclist, then got out of his car and walked away." He is still at large.
