In a choice move, Outside Lands commissioned Peter Max, the German illustrator known for his use of psychedelic shapes, to create the official Outside Lands 2013 poster. And here it is, in all of its tripped out glory. All that's missing is a talking purple fire hydrant that blows bubbles.

Outside Lands, running August 9 thru 11, sold out of all tickets in record time this year.
We feel for Sarah Palin. We do. The Arizona shooting rampage was neither her fault nor the fault of Tea Party members. It just wasn't. (Championing a party that, at its core, centers around a collective dislike of President's Barack Obama's melanin levels? Sure, that's her fault. But certainly not what happened to Rep. Gabrielle Gifford, Gabriel Zimmerman and several others last week.) To attack Palin here is unfair. That would be like unjustly blaming Muslims for the actions of a few extremists, a thick slice of irony lost on the former GOP vice presidential candidate and her self-centered tirade against irresponsible journalists.

However, that didn't stop these posters from appearing in San Francisco overnight. This one here, found in Hayes Valley on Grove between Laguna and Octavia, says: "Enrage them with fear until they feel justified in their violence."

So much for nonpartisanship.

Obama Drama Fairey Tale

By Tiffany Maleshefski

SF News

eBay

Obama

posters

Brock Keeling

By Tiffany Maleshefski

Artist Shepard Fairey was clearly trying to do a good thing when he donated oodles of his highly coveted Pop Art political propaganda to the Barack Obama campaign.

You know the posters. The ones where the presidential candidate is looking out into America’s horizon brimming with dreamy optimism, with the words "Hope," "Change," "Progress," emblazoned underneath. The ones that sort of imply he’s a Messiah, but kind of have a sense of humor about it too (so back off Republicans!)

Fairey's intent has always been to distribute the iconic image and subsequent posters for free. He even has the image available on his website that folks can download for free. Thousands upon thousands of posters and postcards have been printed, and Fairey, hasn’t made a single dime. And that’s fine, because the “Obey Giant” artist never meant to make a profit.

Totally nice, right?

Ok, well, not so nice is the disappointingly large number of people have begun selling the artist’s free posters on eBay, hoping in most cases, to come away with a whopping $12 or $13.

At a recent Obama fundraiser, volunteers grimaced as they folded the super popular posters in half. They were hoping the crease through the poster’s middle would detract lame asses from reselling the would-or-would-not-be collector’s item on eBay. Good luck with that.

Tweaked Anti-Meth Campaign Posters

Gay men and uppers go together like peanut butter and chocolate.
If the purple Impeach banner at Sunday's Giant's game got you all giddy with subversive glee, then tomorrow's opening of the Propaganda III World Tour at the Phoenix Hotel is sure to have you hyperventilating. Celebrate our country's {insert George W's voice here} "freedom" {end voice} by perusing hundreds of culture-jamming, political posters from around the globe, the act of which will make old Uncle Sam's hairy, gray ears burn with fury. We can't think of a better way to spend the holiday -- enjoying art, music, bbq, and cocktails poolside, all for no cover!

The event has been organized by John Doffing through the Start Soma gallery, and any and all artists are encouraged to participate, regardless of viewpoint. (Sorry, submissions for tomorrow's show were due on Sunday.) Posters and galleries will be continually added throughout the tour, which is slated for one-day stops all over North America, South America, Australia, Asia, Europe, and the Middle East. The event is purely non-commercial, and the artwork will only be available for sale through the participating artists' private Web sites. The tour comes full circle some time next year when it ends in San Francisco.

Check out Propaganda III's exhaustive Flickr gallery, which currently has over 500 posters that will be in tomorrow's show.
