The outlet also reports that 100 federalized California National Guard members arrived in Portland Saturday, and 100 were due Sunday. California Governor Gavin Newsom and Oregon Governor Tina Kotek are both filing lawsuits.

“The facts on the ground in Oregon haven’t changed,” Kotek said during a news conference, via AP. “There’s no need for military intervention in Oregon. There’s no insurrection in Portland, there’s no threat to national security.”

“What was unlawful yesterday is unlawful today,” said Oregon Attorney General Dan Rayfield per AP. “The judge’s order was not some minor procedural point for the president to work around, like my 14-year-old does when he doesn’t like my answers.”

As the Associated Press reports, while there’s been no announcement from the White House, California Governor Gavin Newsom said in a press release that 300 members of the California National Guard were en route to Portland Sunday on Trump’s orders to “protect federal property” during nightly protests at the city’s ICE facility, which Newsom calls “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.”

Per CalMatters, Newsom plans to sue Trump for federalizing the California National Guard against citizens again. “The commander-in-chief is using the U.S. military as a political weapon against American citizens. We will take this fight to court, but the public cannot stay silent in the face of such reckless and authoritarian conduct by the President of the United States,” Newsom said in the statement.

CalMatters reports that Karin Immergut, an Oregon federal judge who was appointed during Trump’s first term (per the AP), temporarily blocked Trump from deploying the Oregon National Guard to Portland, saying the protests were “not significantly violent or disruptive” to justify sending troops.

Regarding protestors allegedly utilizing intimidation tactics against officers, such as flashing bright lights into their eyes while driving or constructing makeshift guillotines, Immergut said, via CalMatters, “These incidents are inexcusable, but they are nowhere near the type of incidents that cannot be handled by regular law enforcement forces.”

“This historical tradition boils down to a simple proposition: this is a nation of Constitutional law, not martial law,” Immergut wrote in the order, per Newsom’s press release. “Defendants have made a range of arguments that, if accepted, risk blurring the line between civil and military federal power — to the detriment of this nation.”

Per SFist, California sued Trump in June for federalizing 4,000 state National Guard members during ICE protests in Los Angeles County, but Trump ultimately regained control through the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, per CalMatters.

Previously: Gov. At this point in time there will be no firefighters protecting the City if the fire happens to continue moving toward town."

The entire evacuation is affected as many as 200,000 people who were clogging highways and roads around Portland in the past 24 hours.

Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has declared a state of emergency, and the only thing working in firefighters' favor right now is that winds appeared to be calmer Friday than they were Thursday.

As the map below shows, three smaller fires, each of which erupted during high winds on Tuesday, have appeared closer to the city of Portland, and remain active.

via #Firemappers

The three fires burning in the Cascade Range and in Mount Hood National Forest are expected to join into a single fire, as The Oregonian reports. Currently the Riverside Fire has burned about 130,000 acres, while the Beachie Creek Fire stands at 182,000 acres, and the Lionshead Fire at 131,000 acres. The latter is listed as 5 percent contained, while the Beachie Creek Fire is uncontained, and so is the Riverside Fire.

One small town of about 500 people in Marion County, Gates, Oregon, is reportedly completely destroyed. But, as the New York Times reports, some of the caravan broke off and headed into downtown Portland, where protests against police violence and general unrest have been ongoing for three months — though the numbers of people participating have shrunk in recent weeks.

While the Patriot Prayer/pro-Trump caravan was itself a sort of counter-protest to the far-left-associated demonstrations that have occupied downtown Portland, those downtown protesters became counter-protesters themselves Saturday night, confronting and occasionally clashing with the Trump supporters. It is unclear at this point if it was one of these confrontations or something else entirely that ended with the as-yet-unidentified man in the Patriot Prayer hat dead of a gunshot wound to the chest.

The Oregonian has photos from the scene, via an Associated Press photographer, and they report that the shooting took place five blocks from the main epicenter of the recent protests. It remains unclear who the shooting suspect may be.

Joey Gibson, the founder of Patriot Prayer, spoke to the Times and said that the shooting victim was "a good friend." President Trump used the event to make further calls for the National Guard to step in to control the situation in Portland — to which Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler replied that the last time the president did this it only incited more anger and violence on the streets. "Your offer to repeat that disaster is a cynical attempt to stoke fear and distract us from the real work of our city," Wheeler said.

Gibson at a Seattle demonstration in January. Photo by Karen Ducey/Getty Images

Gibson should be well known to Bay Area residents for major muckraking he attempted to do exactly three years ago, in the wake of Charlottesville in August 2017, when he announced plans for a Patriot Prayer rally in the middle of San Francisco — first at Crissy Field and then in Alamo Square — likely costing the city tens of thousands of dollars in safety preparations for an event that was ultimately canceled at the last minute. Unable to stir much shit in SF, Gibson turned to Berkeley two days later, where he and his idiot friends — some clad in football gear and carrying shields and other implements into battle — showed up to incite conflict with antifa activists. He later had to be "rescued" by Berkeley police when he and his cohort were outnumbered.

The purpose of the Patriot Prayer group, which Gibson founded in 2016, has seemed to be to support Second Amendment rights and do battle with antifa, with an "anti-Marxism" ethos — though the New York Times says the group is all about "promoting Christianity and smaller government." While not labeled a hate group, per se, Patriot Prayer has been known to participate in rallies alongside militias and hate groups, according to the Southern Poverty Law Center — with Portland and Seattle often being targets, as they are nearer to Gibson's home in Vancouver, Washington. The SPLC calls the group "provocateurs" whose events are meant "to provoke black-clad ideologues on the left into acts of violence."

In June, Patriot Prayer helped organize a protest in Vancouver against Washington State's mask-wearing policy to slow virus transmission.

This post will be updated if and when more information is learned about the shooter, or if a suspect is identified.

Related: Patriot Prayer's Joey Gibson 'Rescued' By Berkeley Police; 13 Arrests Made During Sunday Demonstration

CA Couple Moved To Portland, Vandals Respond With "Go Back To CA" Graffiti

Jessica Faraday and Preston Page did not receive a warm welcome from some new neighbors.

SF News

gentrification

graffiti

hipsters

men's hats

Portland

Beth Spotswood

<img src="https://img.sfist.com/assets_c/2017/07/car-ca2-thumb-640xauto-1003843.jpg" alt="CA Couple Moved To Portland, Vandals Respond With "Go Back To CA" Graffiti">

KRON 4 reports (via Portland's KOIN) that the California-based pair moved to Portland, Oregon four months ago. They woke up this Sunday to find their home and their car (really, really) vandalized.

Spray-painted across the couple's new and adorable house were the words "Get California out of Portland" and "Move back." The pair's car was also keyed and covered in spray paint.

The day before, the couple was backing out of their driveway when another driver began yelling, "Go back to California!"

Faraday and Page assume the over-the-top vandalism stems from the road-rage incident. Apparently the pair had just finished revamping and re-painting their new home. It's not clear how anyone knew the couple had moved from California, but a peek at a website for their upcoming wedding at a monastery in Mexico might offer some answers.

This incident calls to mind a guerrilla sticker campaign from two years ago when someone, or some group, was stickering Portland real estate agent signs with the message "No Californians."

In defense of Faraday and Page (and their many, many hats and tattoos), Portland is pretty hipster-heavy already. The Oregon city is no stranger to man-buns and precious selfies. It's not like two more blond people in leather jackets and Navajo rings aren't totally going to fit right in.

While surprised someone would "go this far," Faraday and Page don't plan to give in to the vandal's demands.

"Portland is fantastic. You can't argue with this place," said Page.

CLEARLY YOU CAN, PRESTON.

A planned rally by pro-Trump and alt-right groups in downtown Portland Sunday — a rally that Mayor Ted Wheeler attempted to have canceled in the wake of the dual fatal stabbings aboard a commuter train that appear to have been racially and "patriotically" motivated — ended in the arrests of at least 14 people, many of whom may have been a part of a counter-protest that took shape in the city's Chapman Square. As Portland station KGW reports, "Police detained a large group of protesters and others who were marching after being removed from Chapman Square where a separate protest designated for an anti-fascist group was eventually closed." And allegedly it was "only the protesters at Chapman Square [who] engaged in criminal behavior," throwing "bricks, mortars and balloons filled with 'unknown, foul-smelling liquid'" at police.

Tensions mounted over the last week over the planned rally, organized by Portland conservative group Patriot Prayer, given that the group acknowledged that the accused killer in the train attack had attended one of their rallies in April, was photographed giving a Nazi salute, and had a baseball bat he was carrying confiscated. Organizer Joey Gibson referred to the 35-year-old suspect Jeremy Joseph Christian as "not one of us" and "all crazy," and with the help of the ACLU sought to convince Mayor Wheeler that pulling their event permit would be a violation of their free speech rights.

Mat Dos Santos, the legal director for the American Civil Liberties Union of Oregon, has said that Wheeler's initial decision to pull the permit was wrong and unconstitutional, and ACLU of Oregon's executive director David Rogers agrees, writing in an open letter, "Standing up for the rights of hateful people is very difficult, especially in a climate where so many of us feel under attack. But there are very important reasons to do so. The Constitution doesn’t work unless it works for everyone, and it’s the Constitution that provides the best protections for oppressed communities."

CBS affiliate KOIN reports that both the pro-Trump rally and multiple counter protests were "largely peacefeul" despite the 14 arrests, but that ended around 2 p.m. Sunday when reports came in of projectiles being thrown at officers in Chapman Square.

Those arrested ranged in age from 19 to 46, and the charges were primarily disorderly conduct, concealing a weapon, and interfering with an officer.

Protesters on different sides of the political spectrum were mostly kept apart by police tape in Terry Schrunk Plaza, with the mayor telling KOIN, "The goal is to keep everybody separated, respect First Amendment rights for everybody to speak their piece."

The event called to mind the recent dustups in Berkeley, where conservative and alt-right groups have planned public gatherings specifically to incite counter protest and seemingly to provoke bad behavior from the people they refer to largely as "antifa," in order to gain publicity for the idea that the militant left wing seeks to suppress free speech.

Patriot Prayer's Joey Gibson has frequently encouraged supporters on social media that "It's OK to be a conservative in Portland," and that it is up to them to turn the blue state red.

“[Mayor Wheeler] went up on TV and he literally connected us to Jeremy Christian, which is extremely irresponsible,” Gibson said to MyNorthwest. “He said that I’m going to go up there [at the rally] and I’m going to have hate speech and I’m going to be bigoted.
The suspect in the fatal stabbings aboard a Portland commuter train on Friday made his first court appearance Tuesday, and he shows no signs of remorse for an act that is being widely condemned as being motivated by racism and anti-Muslim sentiment. 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian shouted "You call it terrorism, I call it patriotism!" and "Death to the enemies of America!" as he made his court appearance, and he did not enter a plea — though we are now learning that he allegedly proudly confessed to the stabbings while in the back of a police car on Friday. Also while in the car, as the Associated Press reports, he said "that's what liberalism gets you," and "I can die a happy man," according to court documents.

As the BBC reports, he was also shouting in court "Leave this country if you hate our freedom — death to antifa."

Christian stands accused in the deaths of 23-year-old Taliesin Namkai-Meche and 53-year-old Ricky Best. As we now learn via an affidavit signed by Multnomah County Deputy District Attorney Ryan Lufkin, Christian was apparently drinking sangria out of a bladder-type bag on the train when he began verbally attacking two young African-American women, one of whom was wearing a headscarf. An unidentified passenger who was not hurt tried to intervene, and the two women moved to different seats. Namkai-Meche either said something to get Christian's attention, or Christian simply turned his attention to him because he was nearby, and surveillance video shows Namkai-Meche stand up as Christian began shouting at him.

Another passenger, Micah Fletcher, stood up and shoved Christian and made him stumble, at which point Christian pulled out a knife and hid it in his hand as a shoving match began. A third passenger, Best, gets involved as well, Christian then allegedly stabbed all three in the neck. Best died on the train and Namkai-Meche died later in the hospital. Fletcher was said by doctors to have survived his wound by "millimeters" according to court papers.

One of the two young women Christian initially targeted, 16-year-old Destinee Mangum, has come forward and spoken to the press, telling new station KPTV, "He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia, and he told us we shouldn't be here, to get out of his country. He was just telling us that we basically weren't anything and that we should kill ourselves."

A neighbor of Christian's family talks to KPTV about Christian's criminal background, saying he's suffered from mental illness going back at least 15 years and it has apparently been escalating. After a 2002 incident in which Christian attempted to rob a convenience store, handcuffed an employee to the counter, and was subsequently shot in the face by police, the neighbor says, "He did his time in prison and clearly he should have stayed there, or at least gotten more help."

Over the weekend we learned that Christian was photographed wearing an American flag as a cape and giving a Nazi salute in attendance at a Patriot Prayer event in April in Portland, an event not unlike rallies that have happened in recent months in Berkeley in which Trump supporters and various brands of conservatives as well as neo-Nazis gather to stoke the flames of liberal protest in a bastion of liberal thought, under the auspices of "free speech."

Another Patriot Prayer event is scheduled this weekend in Portland, on June 4, and Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler has called on organizers to cancel the event. "These kinds of rallies … are typically people who come from elsewhere and hold rallies here because we are a deep blue city. They are intending to be provocative,” Wheeler said in a phone interview with the Associated Press. "I’m going to do my best to keep the peace here."

The Portland-based group Patriot Prayer is understandably trying to distance itself from Christian. One of its organizers Joey Gibson acknowledged in the Facebook Live video below that Christian attended the group's April 29 event but that he was "all crazy" and "not a good guy." Gibson says he met with Wheeler to try to make him understand that Christian is "not one of us," and says that at the April rally Christian was yelling insults at both event organizers and at counter-protesters.

Meanwhile Portland is contending with the possibility that their seemingly liberal enclave will once again gain a nickname it thought it shed in the 1990s, "Skinhead City." Locals are invoking the name of Mulugeta Seraw, an Ethiopian student killed by white supremacists with a baseball bat in front of his Portland apartment in 1988. The suspects were known to be members of a group called White Aryan Resistance which was later successfully sued on behalf of Seraw's family by the Southern Poverty Law Center.

The AP reached out to a professor of urban studies at Portland State University, Karen Gibson, who gave the quote, "The idea that Portland is so liberal supersedes this dark, hidden secret about racism," and talked about how the predominantly white population in the region still bears connections to the southern whites who migrated there over a century ago.

Jeremy Christian will make another court appearance next week, on June 7, and a representative from the public defender's office has said they are “saddened by this tragedy” but urged everyone to let justice take its course. It's unclear how Christian will plea.

A man who was heard yelling slurs, hate speech, and anti-Muslim comments is in custody today after an incident late Friday afternoon aboard a Portland, Oregon commuter train that left two people dead. As The Oregonian reports, police arrested 35-year-old Jeremy Joseph Christian on suspicion of aggravated murder and attempted murder, as well as being a felon in possession of a restricted weapon, and he was booked early Saturday morning in connection with Friday's incident on the MAX light-rail train.

As NBC News describes it, the incident may have begun with Christian verbally attacking two young women, believed to be Muslim, one of whom was wearing a hijab. Around 4:30 p.m. Friday, witnesses say Christian was spewing hateful speech about a variety of things aboard the train, only some of which was directed at the women, and at least three men tried to intervene and get Christian to calm down. It was then that he allegedly stabbed three men, two of them fatally, and then fled the train at the Hollywood transit center in Northeast Portland. Police soon captured Christian in the neighborhood near Providence Portland Medical Center.

One man died at the scene, and another at the hospital, while the third man is expected to survive. One man was reportedly stabbed in the stomach, and another had his throat slashed.

Portland police Sgt. Pete Simpson tells NBC News, "It's horrific. There's no other word to describe what happened today."

Simpson further told The Oregonian of the suspect, "We don't know if he's got mental health issues. We don't know if he's under the influence of drugs or alcohol or all of the above." He added that according to witnesses, "He was talking about a lot of different things, not just specifically anti-Muslim."

One witness who was on the train tells NBC affiliate KGW, "He was saying something about America, this is a free country, I can do whatever I want, and the other people [were] saying you know, calm down, or shut up. He got agitated."

Another train passenger, Evelin Hernandez, tells local station KATU that Christian was referring to Muslims as criminals, and said, "He said, ‘Get off the bus, and get out of the country because you don’t pay taxes here.'"

Simpson tells the Oregonian that police are still seeking other witnesses who left the scene, including the two young woman at whom some of Christian's comments were allegedly directed.

Portland is home to an estimated 50,000 Muslim Americans, and Friday marked the beginning of Ramadan, monthlong period of fasting.

Simpson said in a statement, ""Our thoughts are with the Muslim community. As something like this happens, this only instills fear in that community. We have already reached out previous to this incident to our Muslim community partners and the different imams about extra patrol during Ramadan. We want to reassure them that that will continue."

Recent transplants from Portland and ice cream fiends who've traveled there in the last few years are likely familiar with Salt & Straw, the Pok Pok-adjacent ice creamery that consistently draws long lines daily in the PDX, much like Bi-Rite Creamery does here, rain or shine. They've recently expanded with four locations in Los Angeles, and up next, as Eater reports, will be two shops in San Francisco, beginning with one in Pacific Heights at 2201 Fillmore Street, coming in spring 2017. Sooner than that, next week, Salt & Straw will be doing a pop-up here, though it looks like the location has yet to be revealed. (Stay tuned.)

They also have revealed that a second Salt & Straw will open at a later date in Hayes Valley, in a new building at Hayes and Laguna, per the Chronicle. In other words: Bi-Rite and Humphry Slocombe, watch out.

Kim Malek tells the Chronicle it didn't take long to settle on the Fillmore Street location, formerly home to Evolution Fresh juice bar. "This building just felt like the epitome of that idea of a community gathering place. We knew it right when we saw it," she says.

Salt & Straw debuted their first scoop shop five years ago in Portland's NE quadrant, in the Arts District on NW Alberta Street, delighting Portlanders with their new-school flavor experiments like Pear & Blue Cheese, Sea Salt with Caramel Ribbons, and Fennel Five-Spiced Egg Nog. They soon opened two other shops in Portland, and now four more in LA, and owners Kim and Tyler Malek tell Eater they're now excited to create seasonal, SF-specific flavors like they have in these other two cities — in Portland, for instance, they've got a fruitcake flavor inspired by bicycling Congressman Earl Blumenauer, which I assume is a compliment?

Also notable, they do soft-serve at their Portland-only (so far) Wiz Bang Bar, which features sundaes and childhood favorites — and where they once had an Oregon Ham soft-serve flavor.

They've pulled off an impressive ice cream stunt the last couple years around Thanksgiving, creating a collection of limited edition flavors for the holiday that form a full Thanksgiving feast, like Salted Caramel Roast Turkey, Buttered Mashed Potatoes and Gravy, Sweet Potato Casserole with Maple Pecans, and Cranberry Walnut Stuffing. BuzzFeed did a tasting of this year's Thanksgiving collection and gave most of the flavors pretty high marks — and for every pint of the limited edition collection sold, they donate a pint of ice cream to local nonprofits working to end food insecurity.

Depicted as humorless on the IFC show Portlandia, Portland's real-life feminist bookstore In Other Words — the basis of the show's Women and Women First, and also its shooting location — has lost its sense of humor about its depiction on the show. The staff of the store posted a scathing blog post declaring that they have cut ties with the show and won't allow them to film there again.

The post, titled "Fuck Portlandia," angrily describes how the Portlandia crew mistreated the store's staff and left the place "a mess" during their last location shoot several months ago, and also explains that the store, which is struggling financially, is only paid a small fee for its use as a location. Initially, after the first couple seasons of the show, the store embraced the publicity, as the Oregonian notes — even posting a sign on their own bathroom door that said "As seen on 'Portlandia'."

That is no more, and it sounds like whatever embracing they did was through gritted teeth. The post goes on to declare, "The show sucks," "Gentrification isn't a joke," and accuses Fred Armisen's drag portrayal of bookstore worker Candace as being transphobic and "a deeply shitty joke whose sole punchline throws trans femmes under the bus by holding up their gender presentation for mockery and ridicule."

They also note that tourists only come to take selfies at the store — which actually calls itself a feminist community center, and not a store — and don't buy anything, and the popularity of the show is being used by realtors to sell property and promote gentrification, "using Portlandia’s popularity and insipid humor (‘put a bird on it!’) to make displacing the communities that made Portland a great place in the first place something twee and whimsical for the incoming technocrat hordes."

They may have a strong point, but the show's characters, Candace and Toni, portrayed by Armisen and Carrie Brownstein, do indeed mock the humorless social justice word games of those who work at such a store in a very liberal, educated town, which makes this all pretty ironic.

Willamette Weekly snapped a picture of a sign now posted on the front door of the store that says, "Fuck Portlandia! Transmisogyny - Racism - Gentrification - Queer Antagonism."

The 23-year-old non-profit bookstore has been using crowd-funding campaigns to stay afloat this year, currently trying to raise $50,000, as the Oregonian reports. And despite five years of free publicity on the show, they've been threatening to close since 2014.

Good news for fans of the goat-headed Baphomet! The children of at least one Portland, Oregon elementary school will now have a few more options in their after-school programming choices with The Oregonian reporting that The After School Satan Club just won approval to begin indoctrinating Beaver State children with messages of "science and rational thinking."

Sacramento Elementary School — a 420-student public school in the Parkrose Heights neighborhood of Portland — will be the first to welcome the Satanists in, with the promise that they will "focus on free inquiry and rationalism, the scientific basis for which we know what we know about the world around us." They add, "We prefer to give children an appreciation of the natural wonders surrounding them, not a fear of everlasting other-worldly horrors.”

Finn Rezz, one of the chapter heads, told the Oregonian that the club will focus on promoting "benevolence and empathy for everybody," and will gather once a month on the same day that The Good News Club meets in the school. The Good News Club, for those who don't know, bills itself as "a Bible-centered organization composed of born-again believers whose purpose is to evangelize boys and girls with the Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ and to establish (disciple) them in the Word of God and in a local church for Christian living."

After School Satan was thus formed as a counter measure for the anti-religious, and they note in their FAQ that they're allowed to do so because Satanism is a recognized religion, and a 2001 Supreme Court Case, Good News Club v. Milford Central School, allows such after-school clubs as "limited public forums." It's trying to balance out the evangelicals, you see, not about devil worship, per se, but it's likely to spark some lively debate about the issue of evangelizing in schools.

If the Satanic Temple has their way, Sacramento Elementary School will just be the first of many. "School districts across the nation are now receiving letters from The Satanic Temple explaining that we will be offering our clubs in their schools this coming school year, and parents in those schools can expect to be presented with a permission slip from their children in the first weeks of the Fall semester," explained Satanic Temple spokesperson Lucien Greaves. "All of the districts we’ve approached are nearby to local chapters of The Satanic Temple, and each school district has hosted, or is now hosting, Good News Clubs in their schools. This being the case, we are sure that the school districts we’ve approached are well aware that they are not at liberty to deny us use of their facilities, nor are they at liberty to deny us any level of representation in the schools that they afford to other school clubs — such as fliers, tables, brochures, and school-wide announcements."

Below, the group's catchy little teaser video.

To our north, in Washington State, we're getting news that a swarm of 130 small earthquakes has been occurring between 1 and 5 miles beneath Mount Saint Helens, the volcano that last erupted in 36 years ago, in 1980. Experts at the U.S. Geological Survey say that an eruption is not imminent, however they say that the swarm of quakes over the last two months, all with low magnitudes topping out at 1.3, indicates that the volcano is "recharging." As KATU reports, the quakes are "a sign [that] new magma is rising under the active volcano."

Wired went into some depth about these "recharge" events, discussing how they very often occur years before any eruption — Mount St. Helens in fact showed to be having a recharge around 1998-99, and the next it saw a small eruption was not until 2004. That eruption, which amounted to small spurts of magma popping and creating small new forms in the crater, went on over the next four years, ending in 2008.

Everyone over the age of 40 is likely to remember Mount St. Helens erupting in their childhoods, given that it's the last major eruption to occur in the continental US, and some may even remember the HBO film made about it, starring Art Carney. That eruption destroyed 250 homes and killed 57 people, raining ash all over the Pacific Northwest and Canada, and was as Wikipedia says "the deadliest and most economically destructive volcanic event in the history of the United States."

That eruption was preceded, a week prior, by a 4.2 magnitude earthquake.

The Wired piece appears to have set the internet and news stations off in a frenzy, with a great many covering this earthquake swarm, including The Weather Channel, despite it possibly amounting to very little.

According to the USGS, "The current pattern of seismicity is similar to swarms seen at Mount St. Helens in 2013 and 2014; recharge swarms in the 1990s had much higher earthquake rates and energy release."

SF Ranks 2nd In Highest Per Capita Campaign Contributions To Bernie Sanders

Oakland was number four.

SF News

bernie sanders

campaign donations

Portland

presidential candidates

Seattle

Caleb Pershan

Cities on the left-leaning left coast are donating in droves to Bernie Sanders, the Vermont Senator and candidate for the Democratic Presidential nomination about whom all your (most vocal and enfranchised) friends are freaking out on Facebook.

Well, by way of the Seattle Times, here's a new one for the social media savvy Berners to share: San Francisco has offered up the 2nd most in per-capita campaign contributions of any US city to the Sanders campaign.

Seattle came in first in that metric, with total spending of $596,578 and $893 in donations per 1,000 residents. But San Francisco actually spent more: $669,283 in total spending, although there was a little bit less in per-capita spending here than in Seattle, with $785 in donations per 1,000 residents.

Next up was Portland, of course, and look, right after that it's Oakland, with $202,461 in total spending and $489 in donations per 1,000 residents.

All this info, it should be noted, comes from the FEC and Census Bureau. Sanders' campaign has drawn on small donations, a point on which he and his team pride themselves, but setting those aside for a moment the Senator still has ground to make up in the Golden State. In a Field poll from January the Senator trailed Hillary Clinton's campaign among California democrats with 35% of the vote compared to her 46%.
