Gah. A podcast that's truly fun, quirky, and valuable for fans of literature, this pseudonymously produced program made its home base here in San Francisco until only a few months ago. We were thrilled to come across the show's recent rash of interviews (six shows this month!), particularly those with one of our boyhood idols, Mr. Berkeley Breathed (of Bloom County, Outland, and Opus fame). When we contacted the show's proprietor to give him his deserved praise for landing such an interview, he informed us of his relocation. Alas. No more minor tiffs over who gets to interview who first at the Alternative Press Expo, Mr. Segundo.

Good thing this "Internet" knows few geographical constraints. In any case, in memory of a local resource that's moved east, let us point you to those interviews with Mr. Breathed, and visit the main site to access any of the one-hundred and twenty-three available shows in the vault:

We've recently become reacquainted with her works through Jumping Monkeys, her blog, wherein Megan relates stories about her life as a parent of three children. She, with Leo Laporte, has just launched a new, affiliated podcast also called Jumping Monkeys, of which one episode (described as "parenting in the digital age") has been published. We listened to it and were so anxious to hear more from Megan that we hit her up for the "Three Questions . . ." treatment. To our delight, she complied.

1) Anybody familiar with your history knows that technology has played a large role in your career. How has being a parent informed or modified your relationship with tech? Has technology had any impact on your parenting methods?

Becoming a parent has made me both more and less connected to technology. In those first sleepless months you are literally a slave to your nursing, crying, pooping infant. You cannot ever count on having any free time to do anything for yourself and then when you least expect it your child will take a three hour nap. I found that schedule to be very conducive to responding to e-mails, writing blog posts, or reading random things on the Internet.

That schedule is, however, not at all conducive to designing Web sites, installing huge programs, or troubleshooting your computer. If you get interrupted in those kinds of bigger projects you have to start all over again and it can be frustrating. When my children were infants, none of them seemed to understand me when I said, "Mommy can't nurse you right now, I'm in the middle of debugging this program!"

Technology has had a huge impact on my parenting methods. I've just started to let my kids play on the computer with me. We spend a lot of time on Flickr looking at pictures of airplanes and sharks. I've also gotten great parenting advice from both strangers and friends through the Internet. Without those connections I think I would have felt a lot more isolated as a new mom.

2) Personally, since becoming a father, we've sort of slipped into what we term a "Familial Myopia" (others may call it being a hermit), wherein, basically, the scope of our world and activities has become vastly reduced in order to make life as a parent managable. Of course, a few new doors have been opened as well, but by and large we've simplified things. Did you have a similar experience? What are some of the things you've done to allow your family life to coexist peacefully with career goals/extracurricular activities?

Top 5 Comments of The Week!

Wow, are we up our THIRD Top 5 Comments of the Week Podcast already? The books at his APE booth follow an industry trend we really dig: they're several issues worth of stories bound in smaller-sized digests, perfect for toting around. We picked up volume one of the Courtney Crumrin story (Courtney Crumrin and the Night Things) and we really dug it. A girl with a rather testy attitude moves into a creepy mansion in a weird town and finds herself mired in several supernatural dilemmas. It's the perfect all-ages book: adult and kids alike will enjoy the story, while the adults will surely pick up on a more subversive vibe. The digests run about $12 each, and are available wherever Oni Press products are carried (which should be any good specialty comic store).

The book is the story of a high school populated by superheroes, or, specifically, the remedial class therein, as seen through the eyes of the main character "Special" Ed. It's an extremely funny twist on "hero high" stories like the X-Men and Sky High. We particularly enjoyed the remedial class teacher, "Dr. Zero," a retired, Dr. Doom-style villain that talks in a grandiose, megalomaniacal, third-person manner as he lectures his students.
"Comics are a rough business," he shared with us, but, in explaining the book's appeal, said that "Special Ed is an underdog story more than anything." The book's developed a fan base through word of mouth and Internet channels, notably comic-book-related podcast/Web community Comic Geek Speak, which has helped spurred sales. Mr. Dwonch is also a podcaster himself, one of the hosts of The Geeks Savants Podcast.

Speaking of Dave Dwonch -- did you know that there's a comic book publisher that calls Oakland home? It's the National Press Comics Group, and Jaimel M. Hemphill is its Editor-in-Chief.

There's about 40 or so different podcasts being offered. DUDE, SCORE!

So, now, you may be wondering: is there a list of all the available podcasts, so I can browse them and choose the ones I want? Not exactly. You'll need to browse the long lists of committees on the SF Gov TV website, opening each one's page one at a time, to find the subscription links. Because there's nothing that users love more than clicking on links to more links, and waiting for pages to load so that they can be presented with even MORE links to links.

Good news, though: we spoke to SF Gov TV today, and they told us that they're going to be available on iTunes soon, so their subscriptions will be easy to find. Instead of, you know, hard. Just don't try to subscribe to the City & Local School District Committee. They've got an ampersand in the title, and that totally screws up the XML. Whoops! Nice to see the city practices rigorous bug-testing.

SFist Tech Labs: The Revolution Will Be Podcasted

Fellow Apple jihadies [sic], unite! Today Apple announced more stuff for us to buy!

SF News

apple

Apple Insider

apple store

Body Snatchers

entertainment

gadgets

iPod

MacBook Pro

Podcast

rumors

Technology in San Francisco & Silicon Valley

video

SFist Chuck

The MacBook Pro has a new 17" model with a faster SuperDrive, an additional USB port, and the FireWire 800 port that's missing from the 15" version. So if you were holding off getting one of the new versions until they came out with a ludicrously large screen, or until that somewhat abrasive distant relative kicked off and left you $2800, then now's your chance! (If it's the latter, then our condolences).

One marginally interesting fact to note: the PowerPC versions of Apple's machines are being removed from the Apple Store as they're silently replaced, style, by their Intel Core Duo equivalents.

And some rumors: British gadget magazine/wank material T3 is forwarding the speculation that Apple will release 8GB and 10GB versions of the iPod nano, to make up for delays in releasing a new larger-screen, touch-sensitive video iPod. And it's old news at this point, but Apple Insider (link via Gizmodo) is speculating that the iBook will be succeeded by a just-plain MacBook line (unfortunately, not called the MacBook Amateur), and it'll come in pretty colors.

CNet News.com has compiled a full section on the controversy this week.

Because Wikipedia prides itself on being a grand experiment in the nature of populist, user-driven content creation, this week's controversy and the changes resulting from it will have a greater impact on all kinds of collaborative media on the internet. In the short term, it raises the question of liability — who can be held liable for libelous or inflammatory remarks made by anonymous users of a website?

In the longer term, it asks whether collaborative content creation is viable at all. Can Wikipedia's model of the natural selection of information really create a valuable resource, or is it doomed to be only ever as strong as its weakest link?
