• Health officials are urging Bay Area residents to get a measles vaccination if they’ve never had one due to the rising number of cases in the United States, in which two people have died. Folks in their 40s and older who were vaccinated as children should consider getting their antibodies checked as well. [Mercury News]
• AirPods will soon have a live-translate feature for customers to use during in-person conversations with people who speak other languages. Competitors such as Google Pixel Buds have reportedly had the option for years. [East Bay Times]
• A Pinole high school student reportedly showed up to school with a loaded firearm on Friday afternoon and then fled the scene when approached by police officers who later caught the teen. [KRON4]
• Waymo vehicles were cited by the city 589 times in 2024 with violations ranging from “blocking street traffic to parking in prohibited areas.” [Gizmodo]
• Two Bay Area shipping-technology companies are embroiled in a legal battle, as Flexport claims that a former manager and a former director stole trade secrets before launching rival company, Freightmate. [East Bay Times]

National:

• Police arrested 100 Jewish Voice for Peace protestors taking part in a sit-in outside Trump Tower in New York City yesterday, including Jewish elders, descendants of Holocaust survivors, and students. The group called the sit-in “a mass refusal of the Trump administration’s fascist agenda.” [NBC News]

• State Farm has been given approval by California regulators to increase rates by an average of 22% for homeowners, 15% for condo owners, and 15% for renters — as long as the insurance agency agrees not to drop any more customers in mass quantities. This is on top of the rate increase that was instituted in March 2024. [Chronicle]
• Columbia has expelled, suspended and revoked the diplomas of numerous students who took part in a pro-Gaza protest on campus last spring. Additionally, the Trump administration is demanding that the university take immediate measures to gain back $400 million in government funding, including banning face masks and increasing its law enforcement authority. It’s normal for a big, successful rock band to get a key to the city when they return to their hometown. It is not normal for the ceremony to be in a 7-Eleven parking lot, but that’s what Green Day did on Sunday when they returned to their native Pinole, California.

East Bay natives Green Day blew through town this weekend on their Saviors tour, where the groundbreaking pop-punk band played two of their famed albums in their entirety. (Mark Zuckerberg was at Friday night’s Oracle Park show.) And it got a lot of publicity that Green Day singer Billie Joe Armstrong went on a profane rant against Oakland A’s owner John Fisher, and the A’s franchise, for their proposed move to Las Vegas.  

It did not get as much attention that, as KGO reports, Green Day visited their hometown of Pinole on Sunday, and were given a key to the city.  But very unusually, the key to the city ceremony was held in a 7-Eleven parking lot.

As we’ve noted, Billie Joe and Green Bay bassist Mike Dirnt both attended Pinole High School, which is right across the street from the Pinole 7-Eleven where this ceremony was held. The 7-Eleven locale is also a reference to the Green Day track “Jesus of Suburbia” from their American Idiot album, a track which contains the lyric, “At the center of the Earth in the parking lot/Of the 7-Eleven where I was taught/The motto was just a lie.”

“While Green Day may have traveled the world, their roots remain deeply planted here in Pinole,” Mayor Maureen Toms said at Sunday’s ceremony, according to the Richmond Standard.

Though as nice as this homecoming story sounds, the whole thing was really just a coffee promotion. Green Day’s Punk Bunny Coffee is now being sold in 7-Eleven stores.

This morning, Pinole Police held a press conference, informing the public that they've finally figured ourt there whereabouts of Amber Swartz-Garcia, missing since 1988. She's dead. Notorious child killer Curtis Dean Anderson, it seems, was responsible for the kidnapping and murder of Swartz-Garcia. If you recall, Anderson was convicted of the rape and murder of 7-year-old Xiana Fairchild in 1999. According to the Mercury News, "Amber vanished the afternoon of June 3, 1988, last seen skipping rope in front of her home on the 3400 block of Savage Avenue. Her disappearance launched a national search that drew thousands of tips and prayers to this small-town suburb in western Contra Costa County. Pinole police detectives and FBI agents now acknowledge that those prayers were in vain." Anderson, who was "serving more than 300 years in Corcoran State Prison," died in 2007.
