Blocker, No. 23: Ivy St. in Hayes Valley

At one end of Ivy St., the vibrant sounds of Afro-beat float across Octavia from the African Outlet. A single pigeon observes the sidewalks and street from its lofty perch upon a sill of the Ivy Hotel, kitty-corner from the retailer. Nobody knows if the pigeon has taken note of the owl less than ten feet above its head.

At the other end of Ivy St., low income housing strikes a weary pose across Laguna, a relic from the era when Hayes Valley was known as a freeway-slashed slum. Turning 90 degrees to the left, the newly gentrified and boutique-crazy Hayes St. is a 30-second walk to the south. Visible from our vantage point is a corner retailer, Alabaster, that deals in self-styled “treasures for the home.”

Clearly, Hayes Valley remains in a state of transition. Even the pigeons can’t see everything going on here.

Week Around the -Ists

The Red Sox has permeated nearly every facet of Bostonist's lives. The Miami Dolphins and New York Giants were in town, with some very big cheerleaders. US-style litigation hit the headlines, as Elvis and the Beatles fought it out in court. The London skyline will soon be supersized, and talk of hotdogs caused a storm of criticism. SFist watched local politics get even cattier. Meanwhile at City Hall, President of the Board of Supervisors Aaron Peskin tried to bump off the Environmental Department for personal reasons. For example, eight panels -- three pages in all -- are devoted to almost totally identical illustations of a cat toying with a beetle. It's something totally unexciting and unsuspenseful, but you know if you saw that happening in real life, you'd stop to watch. And just like in real life, that calming instinct compells you to stop and watch when you see it in the comic, too, nicely rendered in Huizenga's simple, emotive line drawings. Check plus.

Mayor Ron Gonzales and the then-City Manager Del Borgsdorf discovered the falcons during a meeting on the 18th floor, where one of them (maybe spacing out during a tedious stretch of administrative agency reports) noticed pigeon feathers floating past the window. Turns out the falcons were having a little lunch.

Yeah, San Francisco's nice, we guess. But you know what it REALLY needs? Parking garages. Yeah, get rid of that stupid Yerba Buena garden, and that useless Golden Gate Park, and that , smelly Mission. We're sick of coffee shops, park benches, covenience stores, murals, and jerks like Supervisor Daly (who's sponsoring legislation that would prevent construction of free-standing parking garages in SF, and limit apartment-building parking spots) who are blind to the unadorned beauty of a squat concrete bunker that reeks of gasoline and pigeon droppings.

The argument in favor of garages is something like, "families, businesspeople, and tourists can't get around without a car and asphalt terraces on every corner," and yes, it would suck to haul a family's-worth of groceries home on Muni. But y'know, folks sure do seem to find a way to make it work in cities like NYC and Boston and London, where we can't recall ever seeing many aboveground freestanding garages. (And have you ever tried parking in LA's Beverly Center garage? It's like friggin Labyrinth in there, complete with a Bog of Eternal Stench.)

It's hard to argue that it wouldn't be nice if fewer people drove and more people took mass transit. But Chris' measure doesn't actually improve access to busses and trains, or the dismal quality of SF transit. It just lowers drivers' quality of life to match that of bus riders'. Le sigh. Meanwhile, big-business groups like SFSOS and The Hotel Coalition are crying bloody murder over efforts to keep SF from looking like LA. It's expected to heat up in January; the supes requested that the Planning Department do a study on the whole dealio, so we can expect a lot of clamor as each side makes its case. Stay tuned!
awful

Take Back The Nap

<img alt="nappingatwork-cover.jpg" src="http://www.sfist.com/attachments/sfist_rita/nappingatwork-cover-thumb.jpg" width="...

Arts & Entertainment

Arts+Events

crash

SF Events

SF Restaurants, Food & Drink

Internet

Justin Herman

Justin Herman Plaza

pigeon

San Francisco

Take Back

the office

this week

When SFist

rita

When SFist was a young child, we'd always get sent home from preschool with a note that said, "Did not nap today." Man, we didn't know how good we had it! Nowadays, what can you do if you're fighting off a food coma, or a hangover from the night before? You gotta barricade yourself in your office behind a huge stack of boxes, or feign an "upset stomach" and crash on the couch of the vice-president who's out of the office this week, or, if you're like us, zone out quietly for 2 hours and call it "Internet research."

Well, hide no more, closet nappers! Monday the 24th is Take Back Your Time Day (to commemorate the 65th anniversary of the 40 hour work week), and to celebrate, the folks who brought you the book "Time Off!: The Unemployed Guide to San Francisco" are holding a nap-in in Justin Herman Plaza at 1 p.m.

Now, we're all for taking more time for self in life, but, being cranky (we could probably use a nap) -- isn't this just going to look like kind of a die-in? Also, won't it be too sunny to get a real good siesta going anyways? And would you really want to stretch out for 40 winks in Justin Herman anyways? There's an awful lot of pigeon guano there. Maybe they should just call it a goof-off-in instead (which we are totally for!)

The most famous are the wild parrots, which have been extensively documented by local birder Mark Bittner on his website and in his recently published book The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill. (A handy tip: The red-headed parrots are the Telegraph Hill mob; the other flock, which are mostly green with a white patch on the wing, hang out around Dolores Park.)

A step up on the food chain are the peregrine falcons, which garnered a great deal of attention this spring when they nested in the PG&E headquarters at Beale and Mission. The peregrines can still be spotted around town, maybe even in your own backyard, or on Mission Street, where they're joined by a red-tailed hawk that likes to perch on the New Mission theater sign before swooping down to snatch a pigeon out of midair.

While the raptors may seem out of their element flying over the city streets, even more unexpected are the urban chickens. According to the Health Code, you can keep up to four chickens or small game birds in your private residence. San Francisco Bay Guardian columnist Dan Leone raises chickens in the Mission, and urban rancher Shawn Hannon has 'em in the Excelsior.

And who can forget Amelia, the flying chicken who was <http:>the victim of a cruel prank last summer? In imitation of a now-forgotten TV commercial, she was harnessed to over 100 helium balloons and set aloft, where she became entangled in telephone wires. After her rescue thanks to a police sharpshooter - who in typical San Francisco fashion subsequently became the target of a misconduct evaluation - more than 25 folks showed up to try to adopt her. (She ended up joining a Concord backyard flock.)</http:>
