by Moses Namkung The last time Chris Brown performed in the Bay Area, he sold out Oracle Arena. A TMZ-obtained photo of Rihanna's battered visage, an awkward Larry King appearance, and a guilty plea to felony assault later, Chris Brown was back in town on a short run of shows geared towards rejuvenating his loyal fan base and healing his public image. The Fan Appreciation Tour, as it is called, is perhaps a test by various stakeholders to see how many fans Brown may have lost through the Rihanna ordeal.

Last year at this time, the gay community (and then some) lost their collective shit over the passing of Prop 8, a pro-discrimination measure that effectively pruned the rights of gay married couples. The passing of the anti-marriage confused and disturbing "Fuck Mormons" banner from his home, while blaming "middle class people" for Prop 8's passing(!); and this handy map of those who donated to Prop 8.
This is amazing. Someone must have dropped some fast food wrappers or chicken bones on that bus or something, or as Jim Herd suspects, the drivers feed them. (Yeah, we know this photo has been posted all over the place today, but who can resist?!)
Friday's Critical Mass was particularly colorful this month in celebration of Halloween. We saw the group go by outside A.C.T before the start of Mamet's November, and the theater crowd was into it.
The Bay Bridge is, as most of you already know, still closed today. Yesterday's BART commute was either "just fine" or "insanely crowded," depending on the passenger. Eastern SOMA still remains joyfully (albeit eerily) quiet. No word of when, exactly, the Bay Bride will reopen, though some media outlets are suggesting it might be ready for traffic come nightfall.
After a cable rod snapped during last night's commute, the Bay Bridge closed down indefinitely. Here are some images of just how the closure is affecting San Francisco and the Bay Area today.
Another thing regarding today's Bay Bridge closure: please send us you images of your packed BART rides. We imagine today's commute will be hellish, and we'd hate for the world not to see. So, if you can, please snap a few shots of riders complaining about overcrowding your BART ride today.
Even more rain blanketed the city today, flooding streets. From the Mission to Hayes Valley, the streets are soaked. Please drive carefully.
Obama, who is currently in town for a Democratic National Convention fundraiser at the Westin St. Francis Hotel, was met with protesters from both the left and right sides this evening, the majority of which vocalized their stance on Obama's health care reform plan.
If you see local photog of note Troy Holden (formerly Plug1) walking around the streets of San Francisco with his camera, you might be $2 richer. He's started something called The $2 Portrait Project. In his words, he explains just what it is:
Here are some lovely images from the aftermath of yesterday's storm. Thanks for washing the city, Mother Nature!
This dastardly tree, at Haight and Broderick, came tumbling down, nearly crushing this cute cyclist.
...It gets cleaned up in 30 minutes flat.
A little airborne Viagra with your coffee, anyone? Here are a few shots from yesterday's practice aerial acrobatics. Fleet Week, for those of you who don't know, starts tomorrow.
What a great music tradition that brings all walks of [shirtless] fans together. We hope the weather is great for you all in the park today and tomorrow! (See our preview here.)
Flickr photog Tristan C was on the scene at yesterday's "Big Insurance: Sick of It" rally at Embarcadero Two sponsored by MoveOn.org, which was aimed at bringing attention to the Anthem Blue Cross' opposition to health care reform bill H.R. 3200. All captions were provided by Tristan C.
It was a hot day in San Francisco for hanging out on the street during the annual Park(ing) Day, which happens worldwide. Good thing there was plenty of foliage to soak up the CO2 in many of the spots, many of which were spotted downtown and in the Mission. It was duly noted that San Francisco has plenty of green spaces when you seek them out, but it's definitely refreshing to see a small oasis here and there in the middle of such urban settings.
Which would be the more difficult/least appealing task, handling a live or a dead chicken until the owner arrived? Flyer found in Shafter, Oakland. We wonder if it belongs to Novella Carpenter.
The Project on Government Oversight sent Mother Jones and Gawker some delightful snapshots of a festive party hosted at Camp Sullivan, the home to the ArmorGroup guards folk who protect and serve nearby US embassy compound in Kabul.
Everyone from Hilary Newsom to Bevan Duffy to San Francisco treasure/icon Joy Bianchi, above, participated in the NOH8 photo campaign, a campaign to help repeal Prop 8. The campaign involves people with varying amounts of fame (some more than others) wearing white shirts and electric tape over their mouths. But the photos, shot by Adam Bouska, are actually quite impressive, very much so. Check them out.
Plug1 was on the scene at this morning's four-alarm fire at Wallace and Jennings in the Bayview District. The blaze started at 11 a.m. and engulfed five warehouses, nearly an entire block. Today has unfortunately been a busy one for firefighters.
In an attempt to snare the golden Latino vote, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom took a PG&E-sponsored trip to Mexico today. There, he stopped being polite, and started getting auténtico. Here are some images from his day south of San Diego. Enjoy.
It's been an exciting day in the Bay Area. We were walking up Post at around 5 p.m. and encountered chaos at Larkin Street, in which the whole block was taped off with police tape. We heard the words "bomb squad" before making a detour.
Photog Steve Rhodes captured these fun and colorful photos at the San Francisco Zine Fest on Saturday. Check out the full collection on Flickr.
As Laughing Squid pointed out today, if there's one thing the internets needs more of it's cats. Lots of them too. Which is why Karen Nichols at Catster came up with the top five tips for getting the best shots out of your furry feline friends. Nichols suggests shooting in natural light, no flash; using a fast shutter speed (more details = more eeee!); getting low to the floor at the cat's level (optimal for paw shots and other precious action you might normally miss up high); and being generous with the treats and toys (which you should be doing anyway). Be sure to check out how to get the most out of your cat.
Here's another set of local signage that photogs captured in all of their clever, weathered, colorful, informative and matter-of-fact glory. Enjoy.
Curbed featured this photo montage sent in by reader Ben of storefronts that are empty or for lease along Union Street from Gough to Fillmore. Check out the larger version.
Local photog Plug 1 of What I'm Seeing went high in the sky too capture these images of San Francisco and the Bay Area from above. We asked Plug 1 to tell SFist more about his adventure in the sky. Here's what he told us.
On Sunday morning, the annual San Francisco Marathon laced throughout the foggy streets of the city. Carb-loaded men and women took part in full marathon (26.6 miles), 2 half marathons, 5k, or the "progressive marathon" events. The main course went back and forth across the Golden Gate Bridge, weaving around the city, ending at the Embarcadero.
