Overnight.

Fugazi's Joe Lally and Philly's Capillary Action were enjoying a nice stop over in San Francisco following a shared gig on their current tour when tragedy struck. November 16, between the hours of 3-10 a.m. on the corner of Valencia Street and Clinton Park, someone broke into their shared tour van and grabbed a few things without asking permission first. And they were:

- Roland KC350 Amp with bent corner
- Yamaha S03 Keyboard with cracked side
- Alesis QS7 Keyboard
- Sharp VLNZ50U MiniDV Recorder with 3" Color LCD Screen (you'll find footage from a November 15 show in Palo Alto inside)
- Samsonite brown suitcase

Look, people, if you absolutely must steal, don't take the broken gear of a notoriously generous dude.

Where to begin, where to begin. First, getting your stuff stolen sucks, period. If any of you have any information on the whereabouts of Lally's cracked and bent musical equipment, contact his tour mates Capillary Action at this address. Second, "if you absolutely must steal, don't take the broken gear of a notoriously generous dude?" How was the hamburglar supposed to know that this was the equipment of a dude of generosity? Things like this happen to good people no matter the purity of their souls. (Come close, we want to let you in on a little secret: straight white guys who happen to have leftist politics are unusually shocked when they discover that they, too, are not untouchable. Just like their brethren over on the right. Shhh, don't tell them we said that.) But we hear what you're saying.

Again, if you have any info on Joe Lally's stuff, contact these guys.

Week Around the -Ists

Happy first weekend of September - and happy Labor Day weekend, too, for our American cities! Let's take a look at what's been happening around the Ist-a-verse.

As LAist melts away in their heat wave and weird weather, they beg Hollywood to make a bio-pic of the posthumous tap dancer extraordinaries, the Nichols Brothers (you must see this), but for them not to film the movie, or anything for that matter, on their hard-to-find street without proper notification. In one of LA's more trendy neighborhoods, they caught up with a famous homeless person, the Silver Lake Five Dollar Guy, and found the Elliott Smith tribute wall (where he once posed for an album cover) to be defaced by graffiti.

This week was surprisingly busy for the end of August for DCist, what with two major White House resignations and the national obsession over what's really going on in public restrooms. But they still made time to put together a glossary of wine terms and a list of jokes about some local firefighters who are suspected of running a prostitution ring. They never knew "firehose" was actually spelled differently, for example.

Despite their need this week to do some good old-fashioned hating, Phillyist was in good spirits this week, with the Philadelphia Live Arts and Philly Fringe festivals kicking off, cheap lobster, and a few helpful readers helping to solve a mystery. They also got some awesome eclipse shots, spread some local TV gossip, and got a few chuckles.

This week, Torontoist found one of the cutest signs ever, reinvented its city's transit survey, investigated how "real" its city's violence is. They were plenty curious to end the summer, too: they tried to uncover a history mystery, tried to pin down its city's fascination with facades, and tried to figure out what was so bad about carpooling.

The UK doesn't have Monday as a Labor Day, but Londonist don't mind. They did their partying last week at the world's second largest carnival. The good vibes continued as they witnessed the unveiling of a statue to Nelson Mandela. They also said happy birthday to Londoner Winnie Langley, who just turned 100 despite having smoked five cigarettes a day since she was a child. They resisted buying her a £25,000 hearing aid, and a very, very expensive skull.

SFist Tonight

-- Aaah! B20 fuel is fuel made up of 20% biomass, 75% diesel, and 5% tomato juice and the biomass is made up mainly of leftover restaurant grease. The film is an
intense journey into the dangerous lives and obsessed minds of six of America’s most prolific graffiti artists. Doug Pray (“Hype!” and “Scratch”) teamed up with writer, publisher, and graffiti guru Roger Gastman, to make a movie that takes you deep into the world of street legends Saber, Toomer, Jase, Claw, Earsnot, and Enem. After the film, the intriguingly named Chicago DJ Flosstradamus will perform, with Vin Sol opening. Doors at 7 pm, film starts at 7:30 pm, music starts at 10 pm. Damrak Gin will providing free gin drinks for the first hour. How sweet is that?. Tickets to the film are $8, but you can email info@sf360.org for $5 tickets. If you show up for the concert only, tickets will be $10. SF360 Film+Club is presented by the San Francisco Film Society, Mezzanine and Rehab. This event is sponsored by SFWeekly, 7x7 and Damrak. SF360 Film+Club is a monthly series, and past events have featured Next: A Primer on Urban Painting, Wholphin (we have it at home & it's seriously funny) and Colma: The Musical.

As for Infamy, the film is supposed to be funny and brutally honest. The artists in the film reveal why they are so willing to risk everything to spray paint their cities with "tags," “throwups,” and full-color murals. Meet Joe "The Graffiti Guerilla" Connolly, a notorious “buffer” who paints out graffiti on his neighborhood’s walls with a vengeance matched only by those who vandalized them. From the streets of the South Bronx to the solitude of a San Francisco tunnel, from high atop a Hollywood billboard to North Philadelphia for a lesson in "Philly-style tags," from the Mexican border to a Cleveland train yard, Infamy probably won't analyze or glorify graffiti, but instead bring it to life.

We'd like to start this week's run-down by wishing a very happy birthday to parent blog Gothamist, which turned four on Friday. If it wasn't for them, the rest of us wouldn't be here. They celebrated their birthday by nabbing an interview with star Adrian Grenier, who misses NYC public transportation when he's working in LA. They also reported on NYU students protesting a band whose name is also known as a slur, the new graffiti king in town, Bill Cosby's adorable dog, and the disturbing tale of a yoga instructor who was found guilty of killing his girlfriend, a dancer from Ohio who stripped to make ends meet.

Bostonist is grateful that the Celtics broke their losing streak on Valentine's Day—perhaps the players girlfriends were withholding the slam dunk until they won! They were also all about Valentine's Day: they made sausage, taught breaking up 2.0, and shopped for Barbie Dolls that were suspiciously like the ones in San Francisco.

Torontoist wasn't sure how they felt about four Greenpeace activists chaining themselves together in the offices of Kleenex's manufacturer. They hunted down the remains of Microsoft's Windows Vista Ice House, and wondered about the future of their men's magazines after the death of one.

Phillyist got pretty into local politics this week, what with their wacky local mayoral race and being Facebooked by city council candidates. They also stumbled across some sweet vintage concert footage and, in honor of Valentine's Day, listed ten things to love about Philly.

* Indianapolis vs Baltimore

Baltimore’s ball-control running game could get no headway against the uber-maligned Indy run defense. I mean seriously, the Ravens only rushed their battering ram RB Jamal Lewis 13 times? Bad call, coach.

Both sides threw two interceptions, but only one side controlled the ground. Thusly did the Colts advance past the #1 NFL defense.

* Philadelphia vs New Orleans

Part of the reason New Orleans' offense was #1 for the 2006 NFL regular season was due to its balance. Were a defense to load the line of scrimmage to stop the run, the Saints could pass. If the D dropped more men into coverage, Coach Payton could hammer up the middle with Deuce. Balance and adaptability equal points. Usually.

The opposite of this is the Philly offense. Mustachioed Philly Head Coach Andy Reid's offensive style is a form of the West Coast offense grown wild in the backyard. Folks forget that Bill Walsh's original West Coast Offense relied upon threat of the run to set up the pass. Reid's unpruned style uses the pass to set up the pass. Then they pass some more. The run is used only as a change-of-pace, and when it comes, as it did for a long TD in this game, it's a surprise to opposing defenses.

Not having a run game has tons of attendant problems: short-yardage plays become an ordeal, and it's far harder to kill the clock when the clock needs to be killed.

As the final drives went up and down the field, the Saints could rely on the run, while Philly to go pass.

First up, no. Just no.

Yes, Jeff was good. He is good. It is hard to watch him now making the same sort of gutty on-the-run improvisational plays in a green jersey for Philly.

As we recall, T.O. did make a huge difference on the field when he was a Niner. He was good. He was a rising star.

Then he soured, and became a relentless douche. Began believing his own wacky logic. He believed that regular sorts of contracts and common sense and rules didn't apply to him. Now that he's a Dallas Cowboy, it makes him all the more reprehensible. Enjoy the rest of the playoffs from home, jerk.

And J.J. Stokes. Oh, J.J. -- your level of bust-ed-ness is one of the few things that make the current hapless RT Kwame Harris look like a good draft day decision. In the textbook under "squandered potential," there is a photo of Stokes sporting #83 for the 49ers.

Dear sweet baby Jesus, how many times were we galvanized into shouting towards the television screen because of the lackadaisical #83?

"Fight for the ball! Fight for the ball!" would be a common refrain. Timid fool, you weren't worth trading up the draft ladder for.

(Of course, an added irony is that Stokes obtained a Super Bowl ring for riding the bench for the 2003 New England Patriots. Expletive.)

"Big Three," hmm? Naw. More like a Scrappy One. And a coupla negatives.
bad

It's Monday-- Do You Know Who is Playing On Your Baseball Team

We've been east all week and pretty much braving the world without Internet access.
MAH: Everything I do musically comes from my belief that the piano repertoire is a great deal larger than most people realize. From what is heard in piano recitals these days, it's easy to come to the conclusion that pianists don't have much of a choice as far as what to play, but the truth is that they have an immense amount of works at their disposal, if they only took the trouble to investigate them. There is a great deal out there that is wonderful, and unfortunately it's not being heard, or at least not as often as it should. I realized this very early – mostly due to a natural and very intense curiosity -- and a large part of my activities consists in unveiling this music to listeners, through my recitals and especially my recordings.

I owe my musical career to my father, who was a very good amateur pianist. Had he not played the piano himself, there is a good chance I would not have discovered my musical aptitudes.
Marc-André, how would you describe yourself to our not-necessarily-super-classical-music-savvy audience? Here's what happening with your Niners and Raiders.

* Philadelphia vs. San Francisco
Sunday, September 24, 2006. 1:15 PM, PST.
Week 03
The Battle Of The Tee-Owned

Jeff Garcia is comin' back to town with the Eagles. A good local son, he's still worthy being considered Gilroy's second favorite export.

There's been plenty of mentions made about the fact that Garcia and Philly's franchise quarterback Donovan McNabb can swap stories about how Terrell Owens threw them under the bus. In a Chris Webber-like way, Owens helped contributed to death-spiral seasons for both the Niners and Eagles.

And poor Jeff. He deserved better then the walking papers that the foolhardy former 49ers General Manager Terry Donahue gave him while Donahue was busy ruining the team in 2004. Y'know, after he's done with the Eagles, Jeff would be a great fit to mentor Alex Smith after current QB/Yoda Trent Dilfer retires.

Anyways, the Philadelphia Eagles are coming off a loss to the New York American Football Giants last week wherein Philly couldn't finish the game after being ahead by two touchdowns. The Giants came back and won. At least someone's Giants are doing OK. Ours disappoint.

"The Eagles had a thorough whooping on the Giants for the majority of the game," said American Football Spectacular's Philadelphia correspondent Phil Deepthroat, "That does two things: [It] shows that we're one of the top teams in the NFC, and [PHI Head Coach Andy] Reid will most likely not make that mistake again playing so conservatively when placed in that situation, assuming we'll get there in the first place."

We don't know if Philly can yet claim a return to the top of the NFC, but the team is obviously far removed from last season's utter catastrophe of ten losses.

What'll make it especially better is that Dusty Baker's Cubs are here for three games and then it's a three game home stand against, yep--who better?-- the LA Dodgers. Beat LA!

In Giants-land, this is a big deal and there's already much anticipation about what the scene in McCovey's Cove will be like this week. If the weather is good this weekend and he's still at 714 or 715, this weekend will be pretty nutso, which is kind of what we're hoping for as we got bleacher tickets to Saturday's game.

In the rest of the country, however, it's a different story, as most people appear to be having that mixture of resignation and dread that people felt about the birthing of Spederline Baby #1. In Philly, Barry blasting #714 drew loud boos and chants of steroids, but only after much gawking and excitement. Bud is nowhere to be found this week, preferring Milwaukee to the Bay Area this absolutely beautiful spring-like week. The official stance is that this is merely the passing of #2 on the Home Run list and that it's really Henry Aaron's record that deserves something, a fairly logical point in some ways. But in some ways, not. Hammerin' Hank may have the record, but the Babe has the Myth. Babe Ruth is baseball and to surpass the Babe in career home runs is a pretty big deal. Bud's decision is booed by some, cheered by others.

Us, well our prediction is that no matter what happens, it won't happen on Saturday. We've missed 500, 70, and 600 by a day. We expect our streak to continue.
