Crucial Giants v. Phillies Game 5 Starts at 4:30

San Francisco Giants dangle on the precipice of clinching their first pennant since 2002. And tonight? Could be the night. National League Championship Series Game 5, set for a 4:57 first pitch, starts at 4:30 p.m. on FOX (Channel 2). And just like Game 1, Tim Lincecum will go up against Roy Halladay. more ›

Week Around the -Ists

LAist began the month with a new food series exploring the popular and unknown late night eats around town. If a Top Chef winner opened up a late night spot in Los Angeles, denizens would flock it, yet the LA Times and other media might be wary. Turning to sports, the Dodger season was quite memorable in the way that it imploded and the LA County Sheriff's Department made some games of their own such as "Operation Any Booking," where the object was to arrest as many people as possible within a specific 24-hour period (some might suspect these cops can be found on HotChicksWithDoucheBags). The crazy stories continue in an interview with Brandon D. Christopher, author of Dirty Little Altar Boy, and a Santa Monica College Professor being blamed for the Burma web blackout. more ›

Week Around The -Ists

Holy smokes! Giant fish on the MTA, Paris Hilton in jail, then out, then in again, Al Gore, goatses, blumpkins, Matt Damon, and baby art critics! It's been a busy week across the Ist-A-Verse, and here's a smattering of what's been going on. more ›

It's That Time of the Year

It's That Time of the Year

We've given up our dislike of this whole interleague baseball thing years ago when we realized that things like the Yankees coming to town for a series against the Gints is a pretty cool thing. The same with a set in Fenway also coming this summer. As for the yearly Melee by the Bay, we've sort of acquired a feeling of meh towards the whole thing. It's done every year so there's really not that much of a difference between this series and, say, a Giants/Phillies series or an A's/Indians series. more ›

Leon Trotsky Previews the Upcoming Baseball Season

So with baseball starting up this week, we thought we'd turn over the previews to our favorite revolutionary, Leon Trotsky. Coming up, quotes that he thinks sum up the season and Leon's predictions. more ›

We here in the Ist-A-Verse know that we're sensational, but it's very rare that we get a chance to be sensationalistic. This week, we've decided to have ourselves a little fun and try our hand at tacky tabloid headlines, using nothing more than our favorite posts from this week. more ›

Two Little Words that Mean So Much: Beat L.A!

Two Little Words that Mean So Much: Beat L.A!

As this disheartening, dispiriting, and disillusioning Giants' baseball season comes to a close, it is quite possible that there is still a chance that this season could be saved, redeemed even. For all could be forgiven, all forgotten, with just one act, one thing, one simple, simple thing-- knocking the Dodgers out of the playoffs. more ›

What's the Score, Boys? What Did Bugs Bunny Do? What's With the Carrot League Baseball Today?

What's the Score, Boys? What Did Bugs Bunny Do? What's With the Carrot League Baseball Today?

These are not good days for the Stanford University Cardinal. In an upset with all sorts of subtext, the Cardinal lost to San Jose State University, 35-34 as SJSU came from 20 points behind. This is a huge victory in the same way it was a huge victory when all the slobs beat the snobs in those early 80's teen comedies. Stanford turned the ball over three teams in the second half-- one of them being an interception in the end zone-- and were completely unable to stop a rampaging Spartan running game. With two minutes left in the game, Stanford drove down the length of the field only to have Spartan defender Rakine Toomes knock the ball from WR Evan Moore's hands. SJSU is now 1-1 and Stanford is 0-2. more ›

Yeah, It's Always Sunny in San Francisco-- What Of It?

Yeah, It's Always Sunny in San Francisco-- What Of It?

This morning while drinking our coffee and surfing the Web, we went to Deadspin and saw this little blurb about Giants' fans treatment of Phillies pitcher Brett Myers. Myers was cited for taking a few swings at his wife and in typical jock-land style, was treated by kid gloves by his employers and the rest of Major League Baseball. Yesterday was Myers first day back from his tiny, tiny suspension and we guess didn't get booed vociferously enough for some people. Thus the Deadspin post, snarking on us Giants. That's followed by the usual snide comments about hippies, overwrought political correctness, and too many lame-ass corporate fans. more ›

Across The -ist Network

The weeks starts out right when a sucker punch on the field lands Chicagoist in the middle of a Sox/Cubs throwdown and the fists continue to fly in the comments. Despite suburban resident Ms. Pinney's best little try no books will be banned anytime soon and the El is really really gross. more ›

LAist has so much fun this week! They go to E3, where they overhear the timeless remark "Man, this is where nerdy girls get laid." Is that a promise? They also give us this week's best CDs and make us realize that LA is the best place to use Zillow. more ›

SFist is Talking Baseball

SFist is Talking Baseball

With the start of the upcoming baseball season less than a week away, SFist's sports desk will try and break the new season down for y'all, round-table, free-form, discussion style. In the next few days, we'll debate the winners, the losers, and all the in-betweens. This discussion could be great, it could be lame, it could be meh. We guess we'll find out more ›

Meet Your New Reliever, Same as the Old Reliever

Meet Your New Reliever, Same as the Old Reliever

The Giants said hello to a new friend yesterday and resigned relief pitcher Tim Worrell. Worrell was with the team in the Glory Days between 2001-2003 and was involved in two of the most gut wrenching moments of SFist's life-- Game 3 against the Marlins in 2003 and Game 6 of the Series. Which, actually, isn't that fair as we like Worrell. He was always a steady setup man and performed nobly as a reliever when Nenn went down in 2003 (and helped our fantasy team come in 2nd place) and we never really blamed him for the collapses. We blame Felix Rodriguez. We'll always remember his goalie like stop in the eleventh inning (we think) of that climatic game against the Fish which made us think for just a second, a smidgeon of a second, that everything will be allright. Or something like that. We've been blocking most of that game for years now. more ›

Your San Francisco Giants: When Bad Things Happen to Bad Teams

How bad are things for the Giants? Well, the best thing that happened to them over the past week was they got rained out. Why was it a good thing? Because it meant that Sunday was a double header and since it's so hard to win both games of a double header, it increased the odds that the Giants might actually win. Yep, it's been that bad of a week for Your San Francisco Giants. Since we last posted, the Giants won one game. Just one. For those keeping score at home, the Giants put together an eight game losing streak (their longest since 2000) before finally winning the first game of Sunday's double header against the Mets. They then went out and promptly got shellacked in the night game. more ›
