When do you decide to make an effort to try and affect things on the bus (telling people to move back or making a fuss if people try and enter through the back door). And if you don't do one of those things, why not?

This sort of thing lives in the Land of Personal Preference; there's no official MUNI policy that comes into play on either of these topics.

Drivers who are sour or who hate their jobs (everybody knows who they are) will pass by bus stops, ignore the sickening and dangerous crowding that can happen up front where their mirrors are, etc. etc. But this is bullshit from a safety and public service perspective. Personally, I'm on the microphone as soon as it starts getting crowded asking people to move to the back and make room for passengers trying to get on the bus, as well as asking for those to give up front seats for those who need them more -- elderly or disabled passengers.

But I must say that I've been a passenger on plenty of buses where drivers ignored both the pile-up at the front of the bus and the obvious flouting of signage and common decency. (e.g., 16-year-olds remaining seated in the front and chatting loudly on their cells while Grampa teeters precariously, feebly clutching the nearest pole.) It's inexcusable for the driver to remain silent in such situations.

I have a major hard-on for the back door. Under most circumstances I can't stand it when people come through the back door and will try my best to put a stop to it. Caveat is that if the bus is very crowded I will open the back door to make loading easier. But the truth is that a
LOT of the time there may be only 10-15 passengers on the bus and there're people who insist on trying to board through the back doors. In my experience, this is almost always because they're trying to evade paying the fare. You all know how I feel about that.

SFist Photo: Segways On Sidewalks In San Francisco

Segway scooters on S.F. sidewalks

Arts & Entertainment

celebrity

Chris Daly

civic center

Daly

District

Grove Street

Jim Herd

Personal

Pics

Supervisor Chris Daly

Transportation

Jim

Wanted: Pissboy

Unemployed? Well, you have to live in San Mateo and have access to a car. Which is great because you'll have to be on call 24/7. Computer skills are mandatory as is speaking English. It will also help if you dress well, act professionally, are thorough and have a great sense of humor.

It also helps if you are a Giants fan.

And what will you do in this capacity? Why cook and clean and run the schedule. Also schedule appointments, pick up the mail, do the food shopping and drive the person to and from Giants games. Not listed but we're sure will be included are dodging thrown phones, handling insults, keeping members of said sports celebrity's entourage from going to jail for gun violations and keep any sign of groupie from celebrity's wife.

Say, they have to drive to Giants games and they're in San Mateo. Could it be? No, Barry wouldn't need a personal assistant, would he? He is about to resign with the Giants.

Yesterday on Slashdot was a review of local NYT tech correspondent John Markoff's new book, "What The Dormouse Said: How the 60s Counterculture Shaped the Personal Computer Industry." Quoting the review:

Most histories of the personal computer begin with Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, and Apple in 1976, but while hanging out at SAIL in the mid 1970s, and at the First West Coast Computer Faire in 1977, I heard highly attenuated versions of the folklore that Markoff has only now, after nearly 30 years, run to ground. Conventional histories of the PC make passing reference to the MITS Altair (1974) before going on the talk about the Apple, the IBM PC (1981) and what followed. The more sophisticated would conspiratorially tell the story of how Steve Jobs "stole the idea" for the Macintosh from Xerox's fabled Palo Alto Research Center (PARC) as they were "fumbling the future," and nearly everyone knew that Bill Gates then stole the ideas from Apple.

But the truth of those half-heard folktales from my youth is that nearly every concept in the personal computer predates all of this, in a delightfully picaresque tale that starts in the late 1950s and weaves together computers, LSD, the Berkeley Free Speech Movement, the Vietnam War and dozens of characters.

We've been reading Markoff since we were a kid, after SFist's dad brought home a copy of "Cyberpunk" and said, "This is a book by a guy I went to school with." We could have cared less about our dad's old college buddies at the time, but we couldn't have cared more about anything 'cyberpunk' (we were Sci-Fi nerds deep into William Gibson at the time), and the book didn't disappoint. Needless to say, we're going to have to go get a copy of this -- how could SFist pass up stories of acid-dropping leftist computer nerds in the Bay Area?

Sophie Maxwell Pisses Off The Blogosphere

Well, when we suggested that Sophie start a blog to help counter some of the diatribes by critics in her c...

SF News

blogs

Chris Daly

Chris Nolan

City

City Attorney

City Hall

Daly

democracy

District

Edward Champion

ethics commission

friends

history

international

money

News+Sports

Personal

Pier

Rules Committee

the city

jackson

Well, when we suggested that Sophie start a blog to help counter some of the diatribes by critics in her constituency, we were only partly joking. Sure, we were jealous that our friends in District Six have a blogging supe, and we don't. But really, we tend to like Supervisor Maxwell, being the child of activists ourselves. But her public perception is about to take a hit again, this time on an international level, and as usual, she doesn't entirely deserve it.

First, Michael Bassik over at Personal Democracy Forum posted on a new city ordinance [PDF] which, according to Chad Jacobs over at the City Attorney's office would require blogs with over 500 readers (uh, yeah, good luck establishing what site metric you'll use for that -- we use sessions, by the way) and that mention local candidates for office to register with the city's Ethics Commission and report all blog-related costs over $1,000. Now Slashdot has picked it up, angering blog nerds worldwide. In an update to his original post, Edward Champion says that Greg Assay, an aide to Supervisor Maxwell, has assured him that blogs will be considered news outlets and exempt -- which is awesome, because now we can wave that around when we apply for our press pass!

We agree with Chris Nolan, who lays out the history behind the ordinance in a great post, when she points out that she's "[O]n record as favoring full disclosure of payments made to anyone during a campaign." And we're also going to agree with her assesment that this new ordinance is poorly conceived and written, not evil. We certainly do our best to disclose our personal interest in a story, but rest assured that we're not going to be taking any money in exchange for positive coverage on SFist. Though if you do have a pro or anti Chris Daly screed to promote, you can always buy an ad. In the meantime, you can drop by City Hall and see what the Rules Committee (Alioto-Pier, Mirkarimi and Maxwell) has to say tomorrow. We're going to doubt that this passes on first reading.

Let's Play BALCO!

For a trial that's supposed to be l...

SF News

A's

As

Barry Bonds

baseball

Brian Sabean

court

Gary Sheffield

Giants

Greg Anderson

interview

Jason Giambi

Jason Schmidt

News+Sports

people

Personal

photos

Pirates

Bay Area Sports

Vice President

Victor Conte

Jon

For a trial that's supposed to be leak proof, this whole BALCO mess is leaking all over the place. In response to charges of misconduct brought on by details of the investigation leaking, , the court leaked documents on Friday detailing an interview Federal Agents had with Barry Bonds' personal trainer Greg Anderson ("Barry Bonds' Personal Trainer Gary Anderson", of course, pretty much being his new name). In the report, Anderson named several Giants' players as users of steroids. Those Giants included Bobby Estalella, Armando "Brian Sabean Suckered the Pirates Into Trading Me For Jason Schmidt" Rios, and 2002 playoff hero Benito Santiago. Anderson denied giving Bonds' anything, but when presented with evidence showing that he had, Anderson stopped the interview saying that "he didn't think he should be talking anymore because he didn't want to go to jail." This follows the story from several weeks ago in which the Chronicle said they had secretly recorded tapes of Anderson in which he talked about giving the undetectable steriod known as "the clear" to Bonds. Anderson's lawyer denied the charges. As did BALCO head Victor Conte

Court documents also released on Friday included statements from BALCO Vice President James Valente naming not only Bonds, but also Gary Sheffield and then-A's players Jeremy and Jason Giambi as people they supplied not only "the clear" but also "the cream" too. Which, if true, proves that steroids may help player's hit home runs, but won't help them in sliding. Valente went on to say that BALCO would often provide urine tests of the players who were using as a way of pre-screening, with Anderson putting his name on Bonds' tests as a way of protecting the player. These statements were denied by Valente's lawyer, who called Federal Investigators "unadulterated punks" for leaking the story.

Due to all the leaking, lawyers for the BALCO gang charged misconduct on part of the Federal Investigators and asked the case to be dismissed. Besides the leaks, the lawyers claimed that their clients were subjected to illegal searches and coerced by federal investigators. Federal Investigators- surprise, suprise- denied those charges.

While we don't know if any of these charges are true, we can, however, say that that sound you are hearing is that of Giants fans' sticking their hands over their ears and blabbing away "we can't hear you...we can't hear you."
Proposition 63- Mental Health Services Expansion, Funding. Tax on Personal Incomes Above $1 Million.
This measure basically calls for funding Mental Health services by taxing those who have incomes over a million a year. Sounds fine to us. But if you're going to pass some sort of Eat the Rich ballot initiative, do we want it to be for Mental Health? Not that we're not for more money for Mental Health issues, but there's only so many times you can go to the well, if you know what we mean.

Proposition 64- Limits on Private Enforcement of Unfair Business Competition Laws.
This one basically puts a bunch of caps and limits on "frivolous" "unfair business competition" lawsuits filed against "small businesses." Those "small business being" Microsoft, GlaxoSmithKline, and Bank of America. The Web site supporting the bill lists a bunch of crazy lawsuits that this proposition would prevent from being ever filed again. The Web site against the Proposition has a Schoolhouse Rock like cartoon on it’s home page.

Proposition 66- Limitations on "Three Strikes" Law. Sex Crimes. Punishment.
Here's a shocker- the "three strikes" law turned out to be a little too much law and too much order. Who woulda thunk it? Turns out that 65% of the people stuck in prison because of this law are because of non-violent crimes. This initiative would make it so that the only people who fall victim to the "three strikes" law are those who've committed violent crimes instead of those whose third strike is for petty theft or smaller crimes. Those against it (including, apparently, noted tough-on-crime proponent Albert Einstein, who’s quoted on a No on 66 Web site) argue that by amending the "three strikes" law, we'd have criminals out on the streets, crime everywhere, and your basic dogs living with cats scenario.
