The trailers, the megawatt celebrity sightings, the lights, the cameras, the not being invited to cast/crew parties -- SFist will miss it all. As most of you know, Gus Van Sant's biopic -- the story of assassinated San Francisco Supervisor and gay rights advocate, Harvey Milk -- started shooting in January. This past Sunday, the production came to an end. Alas.

For those of you who weren't able to make it to Milk's final shooting, Bluegrass Rave Backroom was at Sunday's Gay Freedom Day 1978 reenactment to catch Milk's final moments at City Hall. Above we have Sean Penn as Harvey Milk, showing off his well-sculpted arms, a cute shirt, and hit acclaimed method-acting prowess. To see some locals getting into the '70s groove, as well as some choice Muni and KRON 4 '70s signage, follow the jump.
Milk

Sean Penn Finds Lust Again

Noted Marin resident/incendiary actor, Sean Penn, and noted tsunami survivor/<del>Russian</del> Czech model, Petra Nemcova, noticeably attended last night'...

misc

academy awards

celebrity

Penn

Petra Nemcova

Sean Penn

Seann Penn

sex

Brock Keeling

There.
READING: Idiolexicon Poetry Series brings together different types of poets -- from slam to experimental, hip-hop and academia -- having them share a stage. Tonight, the lineup includes performances by poets Stephen Meads and Myron Michael, and music by Cynthia Weyuker. Happens tonight at the Boxcar Playhouse.

COMEDY: Part of local sketch comedy troupe SPF7, Justin Lamb and Jay Starr perform tonight at Club Deluxe.<mtinclude blog_id="24" module="Corolla: Crest"></mtinclude>

MUSIC: One of the Innovators of the Bakersfield Sound, country music legend and iconic ex-con Merle Haggard twangs it up tonight at the the Grand Ballroom At the Regency Center.

FILM: Although Into the Wild managed to roundup a couple of nominations for Best Editing (woo hoo!) and Best Supporting Actor (Hal Holbrook), the Oscar voting board ignored Sean Penn in the directing and writing categories. Pity. This story about a young trustifarian's journey in the Alaskan wilderness is a rewarding and well-done watch. It screens tonight at the Castro Theatre.

CLUB: El Rio helps squelch your Monday suicidal tendencies with "Radical Vinyl," showcasing old- and new-school vinyl tunes. A mere $2 gets you in and a mere $2 gets you well drinks and $1 Pabst all night long. Jenny Hoyston mans the decks, so to speak.

Simpson; sexist boor Donald Trump; the Gisele Bundchen-impaling Tom Brady; that fat Arctic bastard Santa Claus (mean!); and Marin County's very own Harvey Milk impersonator, Sean Penn. The nerve.

According to Dickipedia:

Often described as an acting "powerhouse," Sean Penn is known for his intensity and humorlessness. He has been a druggie, a delinquent, mentally-unhinged, and a retard. He has also played those characters in films.

But wait, it gets better:

Sean Penn likes to sneer. A lot.

He does. But with sexy results.

Then, it turned into the bathroom wall at the Lexington, but not nearly as amusing, collapsing in on itself with to much text and varying opinions canceling each sentiment out. But kudos for the decision of putting the piece next to Gay Cleaners -- very rain-on-your-wedding-day, or whatever.

Already the Castro Theatre, right, and boutique shop Given, formerly Milk's camera store / campaign headquarters, are being renovated to get that '70s vibe. Rumor has it that Castro Street between 18th and 19th streets (i.e., the staphicenter) will be closed on Thursday. We'll update with more info as it comes in.

For those of you who don't know the story, San Francisco Supervisor Harvey Milk was "the first openly gay man elected to any substantial political office in the history of the planet," according to Time. In 1978, SF Supervisor Dan White, while under the duress of creaming filling, shot and killed Milk and Mayor George Moscone. Then, thirty years later, your editor was deemed too morbidly obese and/or ugly to appear as an extra in his biopic.

The movie will star Sean Penn (as Milk), <del>Matt Damon</del> Josh Brolin (as Dan White), and our very own Tom Ammiano (as Tommy Ammiano). No word yet as to whether or not Dianne Feinstein will even be written into the film as a character, but...it doesn't look good for the former supe. Or so says IMDB and Wikipedia. Crestfallen doesn't begin to describe how we feel about this slight.
Marin's very own Hollywood transplant power couple, Sean Penn and Robin Wright Penn, are getting a d-i-v-o-r-c-e. At least according to People Magazine they are.

The couple, chained together in varying levels of wedding bliss for over 11 years, have two children. The two appeared together in two flicks: the film adaptation of Hurlyburly and Nick Cassavetes' She's So Lovely. (We love the latter. A lot.) And if independent cinema and a kick-ass view of the Bay can't hold a relationship together, what can? Sigh.

But on the brighter side of a disheartening situation: Sean is back on the market, ladies. (And he's probably sensitive right now, so leave him alone, hot young Republicans of the Bay Area! We mean it.) Although we can't imagine him kicking it at some Sausalito wine bar, listing to a smooth jazz outfit or Fleetwood Mac cover band, we hear he likes the scene over at Tosca.

Anyone else know where Penn likes to lounge? Just where, exactly, in SF do the indie elite meet?

Filled with a combustible mix of conceit and twink rage, Leigh Wolf, hot piece of ass and President of the College Republicans at SFSU, interrupted Sean Penn's Dennis Kucinich-endorsement speech on Friday. Basically, he quietly held up a sign that (incorrectly) whined about Sean "supporting <del>the moral majority's</del> America's Enemies, " or something inane like that. Meaning to impress someone more than make an important or clear statement, Wolf's protest... oh, who knows? But we now plan on committing acts of sodomy, having an abortion or two, and assaulting Patricia Heaton just to piss him off. And for giggles.

But the real story here is the minor scuffle Wolf gets into with an equally fine Kucinich supporter. While not a full on wrestling match, the confrontation got our blood pumping nevertheless. It seems that Brian Rutledge (according to YouTube) tried to squelch Wolf's silent protest by confronting him during Penn's speech. And by "confronting him," we mean "getting hard for each other." Why, just look at the humidity between the two Boys Gone Wild at 1:25. They're practically exchanging fluids before they realize that they're in front of an audience, then self-consciously pulling back. So Maurice. So hot.

Penn, of course, played it cool the entire time. (So, can we be in your movie now? No? OK, fine.)

It's not fair that our sister, LAist, gets all of the great writers strike coverage. Alas. But the Bay Area's own Sean Penn has joined the noble striking effort. He helped to create the above Writers Guild of America-conceived video for "Project Speechless," videos that feature A-list thespionic talent. What's more, they found a way of making Mr. Penn funny. (We kid, Sean. Please don't hit us. Not that you'll have the chance.)

Anyway, this campaign doesn't seem too effective. People will either find it funny (internalizing the message that actors can be entertaining without dialogue), or they will find it boring (and won't internalize anything because they don't care.) We think it's sorta funny, but akin to seeing protesters with duct tape around their mouths signifying censorship. In an attempt to jar to viewer, the whole concept collapses on its righteous self.

A better campaign might have been Sean Penn recreating Jeff Spicoli and maybe uttering the line "All I need are some tasty waves, a cool... something or other, and I'm... I have no idea." Or something like that. That said, we wish the strikers all the best and quick return to writing. (Also, will Marlee Matlin or other lip-readers out there please let us know what Sean is saying? For the life of us, we can't make it out.)

Robin Wright Penn In San Anselmo

We always love it when Drew Altizer sends over his latest A-list pictures for us to peruse!
A little birdie sent us an e-mail concerning the story about Sean Penn's recent desire to wade into the wonderful world of SF politics. According to said birdie, Madonna’s ex was watching Fox News (!) and saw this story about our local Mayoral Race. The story, posted above, was an interview with the naked guy and Chicken John (recently seen playing zombie after the debate) about the Mayoral race. Believe it or not, Fox seemed to think the whole thing was kind of amusing

Anyway, rumor has it that Sean saw this, failed to see any humor in it, and made his offer to be the money bags to everyone's favorite hunky-hipster attorney. Again, we don't know if this is true or what the what is with the story. It could be a joke, a crazy rumor, or something Sean and Matt jokingly talked about while drinking some wine and discussing the finer points of Costas Gravas's L'Aveu.

But, as always, if you know something, send those cards and letters.
