  • Chickens, Ducks, and Donuts: This could very well be the best name for a club night in the history of nightlife. Ever. Save for one other item, it involves almost everything we hold so close to our heart! DJ Amadeus (from Planet Big) spins. more ›

  • Gastronomique Smells Fishy.

    Gastronomique Smells Fishy.

Here's a riddle. You invite a fisherman, his lobbyist, and his sales channel, ie. a fishmonger and a restaurateur, and what do you get? Not an all knives out fight, for sure. More like hugs and kisses, and lots and lots of fish knowledge. The congregation of the above-mentioned people was assembled to discuss sustainable seafood at the invite of the Slow Food convivium of the Russian River. From the Latin: con (with, together), and vivium (to live), that's much warmer than "chapter" or "group." It's all a big family. Maybe they all came down from West Sonoma in the same minivan. more ›

    Gastronomique: Sustainable Seafood Salon

    Gastronomique: Sustainable Seafood Salon

The Russian River Slow Food movement comes down to San Francisco this Sunday for a Sustainable Seafood Salon, that is a panel discussion on the issues of sustainability in fishing in the Northern California coast. You guys remember we narrowly escaped having no local wild salmon on our plates this year, and it is only one example of fishing going awry. more ›

    Gastronomique: Say It Isn't So!

    Gastronomique: Say It Isn't So!

Say it isn't so: is it the end of Patricia Unterman's tenure at the SF Examiner? Last week, we could not find her review, and emailed her asking what's up, to no avail. This week, the food section in the Examiner website again links to the Fodor dining guide or to DineSite.com. The old url takes you now to the Ex front page. Did the Examiner drop her column? Was she abducted? Did she choose to enjoy the pleasures of retirement? We sure hope none of the above, it would be a sad loss for the food lovers in SF. At least we can still read her in her excellent guide or eat at her restaurant. more ›

Gastronomique: A Guide for the Guides

We have been thinking of the late 90s lately. One reason is that we feel this space has shifted paradigms: we haven't been reviewing restaurants for the readers lately, doing R2R as the Bloombergs of the world would call it if there was any money to be made; we have been going one step up in the pyramidal scheme, reviewing reviewers and now two restaurant guides focusing on our city. The two books, below the jump, are Patricia Unterman's San Francisco Food Lover's Guide, and Chowhound's Guide to the San Francisco Bay Area. more ›

    We Read The Weeklies

New pictures for those of you who hate anarchy!cover_box.jpg Last week's winner, the Guardian: Okay, this has been bugging us since, well, forever -- why is the SFBG editorial page always exactly the same as the local news section? Is newsprint really that cheap? Just askin'. An adorable picture of Matty G. to illustrate the excesses of Superintendant Ackerman's new contract, and a First Amendment kerfuffle with sfgov.org over pulling its online video of the Building Commish kerfuffle. Cover article: secret military bases. A close reading of the new Patricia Unterman Food Lovers of SF book by Paul Reidinger (SFist Cedric, check it out!) Loving the childlike in the music scene. And hiking in France. (hmmm?) Last week's almost-winner, the East Bay Express: Awesome compare/contrast with the frat guys who shot the pledge with BBs and the rowdy countercultural dorm. CafePress! Cover article: keeping Jews off juries in Alameda County? Local hip-hop and the power that was the Nine Inch Nails show. And Savage Love: Dan will not be coining a disgusting term for "fristing" like he did for "santorum." (However, if you've got suggestions, post away in the comments!) The SF Weekly and the weekly of the week after the jump. more ›
