Things turned violent in Golden Gate Park this weekend, when a party that continued until the early morning hours culminated in a shooting that injured one.

A 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg at 4:41 a.m. Sunday as a party was breaking up in Golden Gate Park near Chain of Lakes Drive, the street the cuts across the park at 41st Avenue in the Sunset and 43rd in the Richmond.

According to San Francisco Police Department spokesperson officer Ablie Esparza, the party in question was "not a sanctioned" event, as "all the parks in San Francisco are closed at nighttime." Per San Francisco's municipal code, Golden Gate Park is closed from use (barring vehicle traffic to cross the park) between midnight and 5 a.m., though San Francisco Rec and Park "may set different hours in a permit, contract or lease." It does not appear that the partiers in this case received such an exception.

Esparza says that the victim and her friends were near the south end of the North Lake when "they heard gunshots." The victim, with the assistance of some of her friends, ran to Irving Street between 42nd and 43rd Avenues, where they summoned police.

The victim was "uncooperative with police," Esparza says. She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital for treatment of her injuries, which are not considered life-threatening.

Esparza says that police do not have any suspect information, but said, as always, that anyone with information on the case should call SFPD's anonymous tip line at (415) 575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 with "SFPD" in the beginning of the message.

Photos, Video: Celebrating Prop 8's Defeat In The Castro

Hours after the SCOTUS ruled on DOMA and Prop 8 on Wednesday, effectively making gay marriage legal in the state of California, San Francisco erupted into a giant, well-deserved party. Hours after the SCOTUS ruled on DOMA and Prop 8 on Wednesday, effectively making gay marriage legal in the state of California, San Francisco erupted into a giant, well-deserved party. The Supreme Court's ruling that the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional and that Judge Vaughn Walker's original ruling in Prop 8 stands inspired hordes of people, gay and straight, to celebrate in the Castro, ground zero for gay rights.

Chief Justice John Roberts wrote the majority opinion on this one, which you can read in full here, and he was joined by Justices Scalia, Ginsberg, Breyer, and Kagan. When decision was revealed, San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee announced to hundreds of people at the City Hall Rotunda, "Welcome to the people's house! This is a historic day for all of us ... We have struggled for many, many years. I want to thank all of you for sharing this moment. Gosh, it feels good to have love triumph over ignorance, equality triumph over discrimination."

Wednesday's ruling comes just in time. This weekend the annual San Francisco Gay Pride Parade takes the city by storm. Hundreds of thousands of people are expected to show up this week to take part in the fabulous festivities.

The occasion? The nuptials of John McCain's son Jack, who married Vacaville native Renee Swift at a ceremony at Grace Cathedral on Saturday.

Jack is a Navy lieutenant and helicopter pilot and Renee is a captain in the US Air Force Reserve. The good-looking pair met while stationed in Guam, where the groom will be redeployed after the couple honeymoon in Africa.

The couple's rehearsal dinner took place Friday night at the Tonga Room, where failed presidential candidate Mitt Romney stole the show with this gaudy Hawaiian shirt and kukui nut necklace, and, by the looks of things, had way more fun than on the entire Presidential campaign trail.

The reception was held later on Saturday at the California Academy of Sciences, where intrepid tweeter and sister-of-the-groom drank white wine and frolicked in front of the T-Rex guarding the museum entrance.

All in all, it looked like a well-planned and lovely weekend in the city, and we can't help but wish the happy military couple the best of luck.

The dearth of creativity and art in San Francisco is apparent and nothing short of horrifying. That is, until now. The fine folks behind Pride-season's GayGlo (remember that?) are back again (finally) and putting on a weekend-long show in honor of the return of Christ (or "Christ"). It's called the Zombie Christ Haunted House and it will be the best thing to happen to Easter since the advent of the Cadbury Egg.

Here's the deal: Brian Busta (aka Chickpea) and some crazy-ass faeries have taken over the old Tower Records space on Market and Noe, and have created a weekend pop-up haunted house. Christ has risen, but this weekend he's coming back as a zombie. A gay zombie, probably. You dig? Early word is that the final setup is brilliant. And if the legacy/aesthetic of GayGlo is any indication (do your homework, twinks), it's going to be way boss.

The haunted house happens on Friday and Saturday from 9pm-midnight. But the big bet is an Easter Day dance party on Sunday from 4pm-7pm (a good rainy Sunday alternative to the party Dolores Park).

If you don't go, you've failed at Easter and hate God. Speaking of, the fete will presumably be critical of Christianity. Just a heads up.

Donations run $10-$20. And proceeds go to LGBT senior housing, counseling, radical queer nuns. If you want to volunteer, go here. If you want more information, go here. If you yearn to have a bitchin' Easter, go here.

Starts tonight (Friday) and goes until Easter Sunday. Next door to Cafe Flore. Hop to it, kids.

Tomorrow: 'Lucky Peach' + Mission Chinese Food Party

On Wednesday, Lucky Peach's "apocalypse" issue hits newsstands.
On Wednesday, Lucky Peach's "apocalypse" issue hits newsstands. What's a newsstand? No idea. Haven't the foggiest. But you should try to grab an issue of it while you can. Lucky Peach is a welcome addition to the local (and national) food media landscape. And the next issue will be a choice one. Why? Because "apocalypse." And food. And with that, you should check out the release party tomorrow night, featuring Mission Chinese Food grub.

Ticket price, which will run you $35, goes to benefit the San Francisco Food Bank. Included in the cost for tomorrow night's party include: Issue 6 (the "apocalypse" issue), food by and at Mission Chinese Food (imagine that, no line!), drinks by Chandon and Magnolia Beer (*pop* burp), and a slew of food types getting ripped to the tits.

Also, there are like only 10 ticket left. Get on it, kids. Cheers.

The way things should be, really. Now, in their honor, John Cameron Mitchell brings his noted Mattachine Dance Party -- a smashing road party now touring the states -- from NYC to SF on Saturday with a bash at El Rio. Think disco party meets Radical Faeries meets Hard French. There you go.

Queerty notes:

Three years ago, Mitchell and fellow DJs PJ DeBoy and Paul Dawson (both stars of Shortbus) and multifaceted cabaret performer Amber Martin started the party, which is named for the Mattachine Society, a pre-Stonewall gay-rights group that famously challenged New York’s “no service for homos” rule at Julius in 1966. A hit with gay celebs like Justin Bond and Alan Cumming, and New York hipsters of all persuasions, the Mattachine party stands in opposition to “the metronomic, inorganic kind of thump, thump, thump traditional gay folk music. The fascist body culture. The age phobia. The conformist, sheep-like quality of mainstream gay culture today," says Mitchell.

The ridiculously youthful 49-year-old goes on to reminisce that, “when I grew up, ‘gay’ meant ‘nonconformist’—each person was unique in their own gay way, rather than subscribing to a checklist of gay criteria. Which is part of the Radical Faerie thing too—find your own queerness. Harry Hay, the founder of the Mattachine Society, actually coined the term 'Radical Faerie' in the 1970s."

Mattachine will involve the smooth stylings of Mr. John Cameron Mitchell, (director: Hedwig and the Angry Inch, Shortbus, Rabbit Hole), Amber Martin ('NYC performance queen"), Paul Dawson (Shortbus), PJ Deboy (Shortbus), and of course, San Francisco's very own DJ Carnita (Hard French, Daytime Realness).

The 49ers' general manager, Trent Baalke, released a statement saying that Smith "incurred minor injuries during an incident" and that "we are in contact with Aldon, and thankful that his injuries were not more serious and that he is recovering comfortably."

Authorities responded to a 911 call at around 2 a.m. on Saturday after the caller reported hearing gunfire coming from Smith's pad. When they arrived, they found a bloody Smith and that two other people had been shot.

San Jose sheriff's Sgt. Jose Cardoza described to Marin Independent Journal the scene as "pretty chaotic when law enforcement arrived," adding, "There were at least 100 people, and there was a lot of alcohol involved. Everyone was confused, everyone heard gunshots, heard commotion, but nobody knew where the gunshots were coming from. Amongst all the chaos, there were a couple of gunshot victims in the crowd and a stabbing victim."

Neighbors tell KRON 4 Morning News that Smith, who, we should repeat, is only 22, is a lound and obnoxious neighbor who throws lots of loud parties. One square neighbor claimed that he often hears gunfire coming from Smith's home as the lineback, it seems, is a fan of shooting firearms.

That's what we hear each year the week leading up to Pride, "Are you going to Juanita's?" No questions about that parade along Market Street. No queries about any dyke march. Nary a request to check out the live show at Civic Center. San Francisco Gay Pride is, and always has been for many locals, about going to Juanita More's (in)famous party at the Phoenix Hotel/Chambers. And what a scene it is, overflowing with flesh, perfect music, lots and lots of booze, and more. A lot more. This year, however, the party will be pieced into two locations: the first part at Chamber, in the heart of the Tenderloin, and the second at Jones, an open-air venue just above Geary.

SFist talked to More about why she decided to mix things up. She explains:

"I started thinking about having my annual Pride Party at two venues after the success of my Halloween party at Jones last fall. Over the past eight years the Phoenix / Bambuddha / Chambers space has gone through many changes. I know that it still conjures up images of a 'pool party' — though they haven't let anyone swim in that pool since 2005! The party is BIG. What started out as a little alternative party for my friends and I, has now turned itself into something of a legend with a life of its own. And, I'm proud to be the catalyst to support a different local non-profit each year with this event.

"I was asked when planning the event early this year: "'Do you think last years attendance was a fluke?' I was a little shocked. I feel like I'm on loop on a roller coaster ride; nothing I do is headed to stopping. By adding Jones into the mix, I am creating a completely new feel to the party this year. It's going to be sexy. Sexy...after dark. What I'm planning at Jones is like nothing else I've ever done before. Once night falls at the Phoenix / Chambers space the venue starts pushing everyone out. This year I'm giving my guests somewhere to be pushed out too. And, all for $25 the same price it has always been - bus ride included.

"No matter where this party is, it is my heartfelt goal to make each attendee feel like a guest in my own home."

And with that, we implore you to get tickets to Juanita's party on Sunday, June 24th. Fast. Tickets are still available at Sui Generis (2231 Market) <s>and Retro Fit (910 Valencia)</s>, or you can purchase them at both venues when doors open. It goes from 3pm to midnight.

Oh! We almost forgot: From 10pm -1am THIS Sunday, June 17th, More will host an after-party at the Clift Hotel featuring The Scissor Sisters. That's right, the wonderful goddamn Scissor Sisters. They'll join her after their concert at The Fox Theater that same night. Stay Gold DJ's Pink Lightning and Rapid Fire will spin. Tickets are $10. Buy them NOW.

SFist Tonight, 4/28: Muni Diaries 4th Birthday Party

Tonight, Muni Diaries celebrates its fourth year with a free bash, Rupa & The Fishes embark on a bike tour featuring pedal-powered (and transported) tunes, and Mission Loc@l presents its first annual ...

Arts & Entertainment

SF Events

film

music

party

tonight

Leanne Maxwell

PARTY: The folks at Muni Diaries are celebrating their fourth birthday with a free party tonight, thanking "every single person who has ever tweeted, commented, contributed a story, or LOL’d at the ridiculousness of life on Muni."
