Oakland-based structural engineer Gene St. Onge was aboard one of the Gaza-bound aid ships in the flotilla that was assaulted by Israeli soldiers this week. He was on his way to help build houses in Gaza, and was released from Israeli custody. His version of events, as narrated from his hotel room in Istanbul, was that there were about 46 doctors, engineers and other aid workers aboard his boat who tried to encircle the captain of the ship in order to protect him from Israeli commandos. "There were something like 20 commandos, and there wasn't much in the way of resistance on our part, there couldn't be because we were just a bunch of engineers, doctors, and journalists." more ›

According to Hough, the cops are at Sacramento and Montgomery as of 4:55 p.m. He goes on to report that "it's the most aggressive [he's] seen cops in the city." Hardcore! Although the effect they have will--at best--be microscopic, protesters are out in full force at Montgomery and Sansome Pine streets right now, just outside the Israeli consulate. The rally is reportedly about the violence going on in the Gaza Strip. As well as the art of protesting itself. As of 6 p.m. scores of white people with liberal arts degrees are making themselves heard. Loudly. But tonight's protest is a bit different in that there are angry voices from people on both sides (Team Israel and Team Palestine!) making a fuss. Which side are you on?
